FLAG FOOTBALL RULES SCORING Touchdown = 6 points Field Goal = 3 points Safety = 2 points Conversion after touchdown(Pass the ball) = 1 point Conversion after touchdown(Run the ball) = 2 points TERMS 1. OFFENSE = Team with the ball trying to score points 2. DEFENSE = Team without the ball trying to stop the offense from scoring 3. LINE of SCRIMMAGE (LOS) = Imaginary line that runs from sideline to sideline. It is where you place or put the ball at the end of each play. a. If the offense or defense cross the line of scrimmage (LOS) before the ball is snapped or hiked it is offside. b. A 5 yard penalty would be assessed to the team that was offside. 4. INCOMPLETE PASS = When the receiver does not gain control or possession of the football and drops the pass. a. An incomplete pass is also when the quarterback over throws or under throws the receiver. b. The ball goes back to the LOS on an incomplete pass. 5. FUMBLE = When the receiver or running back has possession of the football, takes 1 or more steps with the football then drops the ball. a. ALL FUMBLES ARE DEAD BALLS!!! The ball is marked at the spot where it hits the ground. b. THERE ARE NO DIVING FOR FUMBLES!!!!! 6. MUFF = A MUFF is when a punt returner or kickoff returner lets the ball go through their arms and hit the ground. The player is allowed to pick up the muffed ball and advance it. a. If the returner gains possession of the punt and then drops the ball, it is a fumble. The ball will be spotted where it hit the ground. 7. SHOT GUN = The formation where the quarterback will stand 3 to 5 yards behind the center. a. If the ball does not reach the quarterback on the snap, the quarterback will get one chance to pick up the ball and play. If the quaterback can not pick up the ball then it will be considered a fumble and spotted where we blow it dead. b. If the quarterback has possession of the football and drops it, it is a fumble. RULES 1. After every play each team must have a different quarterback and center. YOU CANNOT QUARTERBACK OR CENTER AGAIN UNTIL EVERYONE ON YOUR TEAM HAS PLAYED THOSE POSITIONS. a. If your team is caught not following this rule you will forfeit that game. b. The same rule is applied to punting and kickoffs. 2. A team can throw 2 forward passes on a play, but you may lateral the ball backwards as many times as you want on a play. a. On a lateral if the ball is dropped the ball will be spotted where it hits the ground. b. If the second forward pass is incomplete the ball will be spotted where the first pass was thrown from. 3. On a punt return or kick off return the team getting the ball can throw 1 forward pass called a SPOT PASS. a. If the pass is incomplete the ball is marked at the spot where the pass was attempted. 4. There is a 5 Mississippi count on each play. a. THERE IS NO BLITZING!!! If your team does the offense gets the down over. b. If the quarterback hands the ball off then there is an immediate rush. c. If the quarterback rolls out in either direction then there is an immediate rush. 5. THE SAME PERSON CANNOT CATCH A PASS OR RUN WITH THE BALL 2 TIMES IN A ROW. a. They also cannot run with it on one play and catch the ball the next play. There must be a play in between. 6. If the player falls down while running with the ball, the player can get up and run as long as there flag was not pulled. 7. If a players flag falls off for any reason on a play that person becomes one hand touch. 8. There are NO FAKE PUNTS, nor can the defense block a punt. 9. BLOCKING is only done by a shield block. You cannot use your hands or arms to block. They must stay in front of your body or behind your back when blocking. a. The defender cannot use their arms or hands to move the blocker out of the way. They must try to run around the block. b. If either the offense or defense use their hands or arms to block, there will be a 10 yard penalty. 10. Make sure your flags are on your hips at the start of each play. If they are not you become 2 hand touch. 11. Always put the belts over the tops of long tee shirts and sweatshirts. If you do not you become two hand touch. 12. A PLAYER RUNNING WITH THE BALL CANNOT: a. Use a stiff arm to keep a player away. b. Slap defenders hands away from flags. c. Tuck their flags under their belts. d. RUN SOMEONE OVER!! You can spin or you must slow down or stop to avoid contact. e. Any above penalty will result in a 10 yard penalty. Repeat offenders will sit out. 13. A PLAYER TRYING TO DEFLAG ANOTHER PLAYER CANNOT: a. TACKLE THE BALL CARRIER!!!! b. Grab runner by the belt/shirt/pants with one hand and pull flag off with the opposite hand. c. PUSH, TRIP, or SHOVE a runner out of bounds because you cannot reach their flag. d. DIVE to pull a flag. e. Any above penalty will result in a 10 yard penalty. Repeat offenders will sit out. 14. ANY PLAYER PLAYING TOO ROUGH WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE GAME FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AS DETERMINED BY THE TEACHER. DETENTION OR WRITING ASSIGNMENTS MAY OCCUR FOR SERIOUS OFFENSES. FIELD MARKINGS A B C A = GOAL LINE TO END LINE (ENDZONE) – 10 YARDS B = SIDELINE TO SIDELINE – 53 1/3 YARDS C = GOAL LINE TO GOAL LINE – 100 YARD .
