Flag Rules 2021

First and foremost, this is a learning league. Emphasis will be on building skills, teaching the game and growing a love for the game. Equal playing time for all healthy and prepared players will be expected on game days. Players will have the opportunity to play all the positions on the field.

Glossary: • o QB: – the player who receives the and will throw/ handoff the o WR: – the player who will run routes and potential catch the ball o RB: – the player who will receive a handoff or will also run a route and potentially catch the ball o C: Center – the player who will snap the ball to the QB and will block the from rushing (arms outstretched and side stepping) • Defense o NT: Nose – the player who will the QB after a count of 5” Mississippi” o CB: – the player who will follow the WR on their routes and attempt to block the pass/ intercept the ball/ pull opposing team’s flags o LB: – the player who will follow the RB on their route and attempt to block the pass/ pull his flags on a run play/ intercept the ball o FS: Free Safety – the player who will play in the back to try and assist the CB’s with blocking the pass/ intercepting the ball/ pulling the opposing team’s flags • Misc o LoS: – the imaginary line where players must line up behind/ in front of, so the play may begin

Offense

• Each Offense will play with 6 players on the field: 1 QB, 3 WR, 1 RB, and 1 C

• Each Offense will have 4 downs to make it 10 yards for a 1st o Yards may be gained through QB passing to WR/RB, or a hand off play. The QB can only run past the line of scrimmage if a defensive rusher passes the LoS first. o The play ends: once a player with the ball has their flags pulled, when the ball is intercepted, or when the ball is fumbled. . On an , the play ends and the team who made the interception gains of the ball where the catch was made. . On a , the team who had possession retains possession of the ball, however goes back to where the LoS was at the beginning of the play occurred on, and there will be a loss of downs. o Players may not Flag Guard (swatting, pushing, or stiff-arming defenders to keep them from pulling flags) if a player is called for flag guarding then the ball is dead and LoS is where the call was made -5 yards. o Contact outside of flag pulling is prohibited, should a player accidentally initiate contact with another there is no penalty, however intentional contact is a 10yrd penalty (forward if contact is by defense, back if by the offense) and a forced substitution (if the team has no subs to make this substitution the player may remain in the game, but upon 3 calls of excessive contact on the same player, that player will then be unable to play the remainder of the game). The player who initiated contact will not be permitted to re-enter the game until possession changes. . Any player who receives 3 separate calls of excessive contact will be unable to participate in the remainder of the game. This is to avoid excessive contact becoming regular in games, and to keep most of the players safe.

will be scored once a player with the football crosses into the -zone. A will be scored as 7 pts in the 2nd-3rd grade age group. o Points are not scored in the K-1st age group. o Scoring for the team who is up will not be counted once they are ahead by 21 or more points. • After each touchdown the players will get set up for the kickoff. The team who scored will run down to the opposite end of the field and will line up on the 10yd line, the opposite team will line up on the other end of the field on their 10yd line. The coach of the team who scored will then toss the ball across the field, and the opposing team will attempt to receive and run back the “”. The team who scored will not be allowed to rush until the ball leaves their coach’s hand. • Games will be played for 45 min; 20 min half, 5 min half-time, 20 min half. • Kindergarten/1st graders will play 40 min; 18 min half, 4 min half-time, 18 min half.

Defense

• Each Defense will play with 6 players on the field: 1 NT, 3 CB, 1 LB, and 1 FS

• Each Defense will have a count of 5 “Mississippi” before their Nose Tackle can rush the QB. • The Nose Tackle will be allowed to rush the QB once the coach’s count reaches 5 “Mississippi”, The Center will be allowed to “Block” the Nose Tackle (find rules in Offense page). Should the Nose Tackle pass the LoS the QB will be permitted to run. • The No Contact rule applies for Nose Tackle and Center as well, should there be excessive contact made by either player, the coach will call it a contact foul and the ball will be moved 10 yards from where the play ended (forward or back depending on which player initiated excessive contact) and the player will be forced to substitute. • Should both players participate in excessive contact the fouls will offset and the ball will be played where the play ended.

Fouls • Offensive o Flag Guarding – Attempting to prevent a player from pulling your flags through swatting, pushing, stiff-arming, and/or other physical means (5yd penalty) o Excessive Contact – When the center makes excessive attempts to block the Nose Tackle through pushing, tackling, tripping, and/or other physical means (10yd penalty, forced substitution) o – when a player makes forward movement pass the LoS before the QB calls and the C hikes the ball ( 5 yd penalty, repeat of down) o QB Sneak – when the QB attempts to run with the ball before the NT crosses the LoS (Loss of down, 5 yd penalty)

• Defensive o – when a CB, FS, or LB physically prevents a WR or RB from making a catch through physically pushing, tripping, or moving them out of their run path. This is considered an Excessive Contact call, however does not force substitution. (10 yd penalty, auto 1st down) o Encroachment – when a defensive player makes forward movement before the QB calls and C hikes the ball (5 yd penalty, repeat of down) o Early Rush – when the NT rushes before 5 count (5 yd penalty, repeat down)
