    Introduction Just over a century has passed since a team of scholars from across Europe, led by German historian of ancient philosophy and science Hermann Diels (1848–1922)1, compiled the manuscripts containing Greek medical texts and their medieval translations into a catalogue2. Following such classical bibliographies as the Bibliotheca Graeca by Johann Albert Fabricius (1668–1736)3 and the several Bibliothecae by Albrecht von Haller (1708–1777)4, Diels, as the catalogue became known, was a landmark in classical and medico-historical scholarship5.     ABSTRACT The Hippocratics in Context: The Ethical Formation of the Hippocratic Physician Joseph A. Lloyd Director: Joseph A. DiLuzio, Ph.D. The Hippocratic Oath is widely known today as something that medical students say at their graduation ceremony as they are about to go out into the world and begin their practice of medicine. This long-standing tradition goes back centuries, and begs the question of why this is done? Who was Hippocrates, and what did he and the physicians he taught use the Hippocratic Oath for? In order to answer this question, one must have an understanding of several things about ancient Greece: the history of education in ancient Greece, communities of physicians contemporary with Hippocrates, the Hippocratic Corpus, and Hippocrates himself. In this thesis I provide this context in order to elucidate how the Hippocratic Oath was used in the education of Hippocratic physicians in fifth century BCE Greece. With few exceptions, these preparations implicitly or explicitly follow the recipe of Sheldon Pollock’s “Deep Orientalism?” (1993), albeit with the increasing tendency to drop (metaphorically) the invertebrate question mark, as if Pollock’s amorphous presumptions had meanwhile coagu- lated into hard facts. When Pollock set out in 1988–89 to theorize ‘German Indology,’ it was his declared ambition to adapt the theoretical premises of Edward W. Said’s Orientalism (1978) in such a way that they could also be applied to “German Orientalism,” which Said had decided to ignore—a deplorable “lacuna” in the eyes of some (Adluri 2011: 253), in my view a necessary precaution to prevent his construct from disintegrating before he could complete it. Meanwhile, thanks to Robert Irwin (2006) and others, it has been thoroughly dismantled—a fact Said’s committed adherents may not have realized or choose to ignore. Pollock’s point of departure is the presumption that, contrary to Said’s notion of European ‘Orientalism,’ “as directed outward—toward the colonization and domination of Asia,…we might conceive of…[German Indology] as potentially directed inward—toward the colonization and domination of Europe itself” (1993: 77).1 International Journal of Hindu Studies 16, 2: 189–257 © The Author(s) 2012.

    On Galen of Pergamum: The Greek Physician and Philosopher of Late Antiquity in the Roman Empire Adrian Muraru* Abstract: A great figure of the ancient world gaining reputation as both a physician and a philosopher, Aelius Galenus or Claudius Galenus, well known worldwide as Galen, keeps the interest alive over centuries. And the inquiry is usually beginning with the question of the time for the year of his birth, stirring up different comments that are largely due even to the writings of Galen. In this article I focus on the chronological dispute – maintained so far - concerning the date of Galen’s birth. At the same time, I aim to highlight part of the value of Galenic philosophy, which is much less known comparing with the high-entitled appreciation given to his work in medicine that continues to register developments. Keywords: Galen, Galen’s birth, medicine, philosophy INTRODUCTORY COMMENT ON GALEN’S BIOGRAPHY The basic sources for Galen’s biography are the autobiographical information poured out in the Galenic corpus 1 . Nevertheless the ancient interest for the mundane autobiographical detail is minimal. Fortunately, Galen is one of the first ancients who offer glimpses about their own biography. But the philosophical work of Galen, potentially more intimately correlated to the scholar’s biography, is almost entirely lost. It presents a comparative approach using Scotland as a comparator, based on three significant time periods throughout the century: the Weimar Republic, the Nazi era and the German folk revival. In each of these eras the issue of national awareness was most in evidence and national identity was being created or was a particular object of tension. The modern Scottish literary renaissance and the Scottish folk revival will be used for comparative purposes. The comparative approach will also aid a deeper understanding of the concept of national identity itself. The hypothesis is that the ballad has contributed to the development of national identity in specific and differing ways in the two countries. Selected artists; poets, singers and Liedermacher have been chosen as representatives for each particular stage. The ballad in the 20th century has previously received little critical attention, thus this period has been chosen as the time frame of the thesis in an attempt to redress this balance and create new knowledge.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis examines the earliest extended collections of recipes preserved in Greek, the recipes of the so-called Hippocratic Corpus (late fifth or early fo^rrA century BC). I study the ways and formats in which pharmacological knowledge was transmitted in classical Greece. The compilers of the Hippocratic collections of recipes drew on a variety of sources, written and oral, including small catalogues of recipes comparable to those found on papyri from Hellenistic Egypt. Much pharmacological knowledge may have been transmitted orally from generation to generation before assuming written form in medical treatises. But following the social anthropologist Jack Goody, I distinguish between the medical knowledge the recipes reflect and the written form in which they have been transmitted. I also assess the socio-economic context in which the recipes were produced and used.
