Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis examines the earliest extended collections of recipes preserved in Greek, the recipes of the so-called Hippocratic Corpus (late fifth or early fo^rrA century BC). I study the ways and formats in which pharmacological knowledge was transmitted in classical Greece. The compilers of the Hippocratic collections of recipes drew on a variety of sources, written and oral, including small catalogues of recipes comparable to those found on papyri from Hellenistic Egypt. Much pharmacological knowledge may have been transmitted orally from generation to generation before assuming written form in medical treatises. But following the social anthropologist Jack Goody, I distinguish between the medical knowledge the recipes reflect and the written form in which they have been transmitted. I also assess the socio-economic context in which the recipes were produced and used. Some Hippocratic recipes fall into a tradition of home remedies, but many other recipes include exotic and luxury ingredients affordable only to the rich. These luxury ingredients transformed traditional medicine into 4Haute Medecine\ The compilers of Hippocratic collections of recipes were biased in their choices of ingredients, and this bias was in line with the orientalizing tendencies discernible in ancient Greek culture. The intended readers of the catalogues of recipes were not pharmacological novices. Knowledge of the ingredients is a prerequisite to the reading of these recipes, quantities are often left to the discretion of the reader, and utensils involved in the preparation of the remedies are rarely mentioned. Finally, I examine the significance of the name ‘Hippocrates’ for the transmission of the ‘Hippocratic’ recipes in later antiquity. As ‘Hippocratic’, they were glossed and quoted in the works of later medical authors. Holism today presents itself as a return to a superior past, and brings Hippocrates in as part of this strategy. Th e model of the history of medicine implicit – or sometimes explicit – in holistic users of Hippocrates is one in which there was a golden age until ‘the turn away from holism in medicine allowed diseases to be located in specifi c organs, tissues or cells’.1 While there is something in this where ancient medicine is concerned, with its basis in fl uids rather than organs, this is of course also a tried and tested strategy for convincing an audience of the value of a ‘new’ thing: you claim it is ‘old’, or ancient, or just traditional.

    Squaring the Circle A Case Study in the History of Mathematics The Problem Using only a compass and straightedge, construct for any given circle, a square with the same area as the circle. The general problem of constructing a square with the same area as a given figure is known as the Quadrature of that figure. So, we seek a quadrature of the circle. The Answer It has been known since 1822 that the quadrature of a circle with straightedge and compass is impossible. Notes: First of all we are not saying that a square of equal area does not exist. If the circle has area A, then a square with side √A clearly has the same area. Secondly, we are not saying that a quadrature of a circle is impossible, since it is possible, but not under the restriction of using only a straightedge and compass. Precursors It has been written, in many places, that the quadrature problem appears in one of the earliest extant mathematical sources, the Rhind Papyrus (~ 1650 B.C.). This is not really an accurate statement. If one means by the “quadrature of the circle” simply a quadrature by any means, then one is just asking for the determination of the area of a circle. This problem does appear in the Rhind Papyrus, but I consider it as just a precursor to the construction problem we are examining. The Rhind Papyrus The papyrus was found in Thebes (Luxor) in the ruins of a small building near the Ramesseum.1 It was purchased in 1858 in Egypt by the Scottish Egyptologist A.

    Introduction Just over a century has passed since a team of scholars from across Europe, led by German historian of ancient philosophy and science Hermann Diels (1848–1922)1, compiled the manuscripts containing Greek medical texts and their medieval translations into a catalogue2. Following such classical bibliographies as the Bibliotheca Graeca by Johann Albert Fabricius (1668–1736)3 and the several Bibliothecae by Albrecht von Haller (1708–1777)4, Diels, as the catalogue became known, was a landmark in classical and medico-historical scholarship5.     A Sense of Humor: How Hippocratic Traditions Revolutionized Greek Medicine Presenter: Emily Siniscalco Faculty Sponsor: Robert Sullivan The Hippocratic Corpus is a collection of medical texts written by Hippocrates, an ancient Greek physician, and his students. These texts describe specific medical practices followed by Hippocratic physicians and contain many observations about diseases and their progression in the human body. Ancient Greek medicine did exist before the development of Hippocratic medicine; however, it was much less organized and sophisticated. Here, I aim to identify the ways in which Hippocratic medicine revolutionized medical traditions in ancient Greece. This research is based on analysis of multiple Hippocratic works, including Aphorisms, Epidemics, Affections, and The Hippocratic Oath. These works are all original documents developed during and after the life of Hippocrates in the fourth and fifth centuries BCE. Examination of such texts reveals the influence of Hippocratic tradition on many advancements in Greek medicine, particularly in the way physicians understood and treated diseases as well as the way medicine was practiced as a whole. In particular, Hippocratic tradition contributed to Greek medicine by removing disease from a supernatural context, increasing accurate prognoses based on detailed observations, and promoting personalized medical treatments. These were all significant developments in western medical tradition, as they increased the accuracy of prognoses and effectivity of treatments, ultimately resulting in a higher standard of patient care. This presentation will primarily focus on Hippocratic methods of observation-based prognosis and the effects of such methods on physician-prescribed treatments. Additionally, it will briefly address the ways in which Hippocratic medicine has influenced modern medicinal practices, and the ways in which modern medicine could still learn from the ancient Greek Hippocratic tradition.

Poe tTy Although we have extant only a 21-line fragment, one hexameter, one pentameter, and two 3-word fragments, it seems that Strabo had access to a number of Callinus' poems and used them as historical sources. During much of the 7th century there were wars involving the Greek cities of Asia Minor, the Lydians, and the Cimmerians. The latter came down from the eastern area of the Black Sea into Phrygia and then into Lydia. Gyges, the Lydian ruler, was at first successful in repelling them but was killed in 652. A few years later, c. 645, when Gyges' son Ardys was on the throne, the Cimmerians captured the Lydian capital Sardis except for its citadel (Hdt. 1.15). Callisthenes, as reported by Strabo 13.4.8 (= fr. 5b W.), stated that Sardis was captured twice, first by the Cimmerians and then by the Trerians and Lycians, and that his source was Callinus. If Callisthenes is to be trusted, it seems that Callinus mentioned both the invasion which resulted in Gyges' death and the second invasion during the rule of Gyges' son. The Trerians appear in fr. 4 and according to Strabo 14.1.40 (= fr. 3) the Trerians were a Cimmerian tribe. In the same passage Strabo states that the Trerians destroyed Magnesia and that in the following year the Milesians occupied the territory.

    Appendix 2: The Three Schools of Medicine Greek names, especially those of more obscure figures, are often cor- rupted in Arabic translations from Greek, the Arabic texts citing those translations, and the Hebrew and Latin texts dependent upon Arabic sources. The list of prominent Greek adherents of the Empiricist, Rationalist (or Dogmatist), and Methodist schools of medicine as found in the introduction to the epitome of The Medical Sects has not escaped this fate; I have not bothered to record all the variations of dotting and the like found in my six manuscripts. These lists obviously represent a Late Antique trope preserved with more or less fidelity in various Greek, Latin, and Arabic texts. The list of members of the three schools as found in our text is essentially identical to that of two other works: Yaḥyā al-Naḥwī’s talkhīṣ of The Medical Sects and a set of Latin lectures on The Medical Sects by one Agnellus of Ravenna (see table 4). Closely related is the list of names from the pseudo-Galenic Introduction to Medicine (Eisagōgē Iātros), which I have translated below. Another commentary on The Medical Sects by one John of Alexandria gives a somewhat different list, as does the list of Empiricists in Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah, most of whose names are indecipher- able. The one major textual difficulty with regard to these lists involves the list of Methodists, where MSS A and M, which were both copied around 1240 from an exemplar originating in the circle of Ibn al-Tilmīdh, add two names, Menodotus and Mnesitheus, and give the names in a slightly different order.

A CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY OF RHETORIC IN THE FIFTH CENTURY The second half of the fth century bc is characterised by the birth and development of various arts, or τέχναι.1 Amongst these arts, rhetoric and medicine do not seem to share anything in common: one of them is the art of persuasion with speech, the other is the art of healing bodies with medicine. However, there were close relationships and reciprocal inuences between these two arts. The inuence of medicine on rhetoric is well-known. In the fth century, Gorgias, in his Encomium of Helen, compared the power of speech on the soul with the power of drugs, φάρµακα, on the body.2 And Plato, in both his Gorgias and Phaedrus, takes medicine in general, and Hippocrates in particular, as a model to de ne the aims and method of genuine rhetoric.3 However, despite its evidence and importance, the reverse relationship of the inuence of rhetoric on medicine is currently poorly understood. It is this rhetorical aspect of medical literature that I would like to stress; more precisely, I would like to show that knowledge of certain works of the Hippocratic Corpus is indispensable for the history of rhetoric during its initial development in the fth century. 1 See, for example, A.-J.     Silent Sources of the History of Epidemics in the Islamic World: Literature on Ṭāʿūn/Plague Treatises* Mustakim Arıcı** Translated by Faruk Akyıldız*** Abstract From 1347 onwards, new literature emerged in the Islamic and Western worlds: the Ṭā‘ūn [Plague] Treatises. The literature in Islamdom was underpinned by three things: (i) Because the first epidemic was a phenomenon that had been experienced since the birth of Islam, ṭā‘ūn naturally occurred on the agenda of hadith sources, prophetic biography, and historical works. This agenda was reflected in the treatises as discussions around epidemics, particularly plague, as well as the fight against disease in general in a religious and jurisprudential framework. (ii) Works aimed at diagnosing the plague and dealing with various aspects of it tried to explain disease on the basis of Galenic-Avicennian medicine within the framework of miasma theory, thus deriving their basis from this medical paradigm. (iii) Finally, the encounter with such a brutal illness prompted a quest for all possible remedies, including the occultist culture. This background shaped the language and content of the treatises at different levels. This article first evaluates the modern studies on plague treatises written in the Islamic world. Then, it surveys the Islamic historical sources in order to pin down the meaning they assign to the concepts of wabā’ [epidemic disease] and ṭā‘ūn [plague]. Certain medical works that were the resources for medical doctrines and terminology for plague treatises are also evaluated with a focus on these two concepts. Thus, the aim of this survey is to understand the general conception of epidemic disease and plague in the Islamic world before the Black Death (1346-1353).
