ADVENT – PREPARING OUR HEARTS AND LIVES FOR CHRISTMAS

You will see elsewhere in this Newsletter a page devoted to the Jesse Tree – helping to map out Jesus’ ancestry - on the five Mondays leading up to Christmas in the Old School, beginning on Monday, 20th. November. This will be an enjoyable series of evenings – highly recommended!

At the other end of the week, we shall be gathering in the chancel of St Beuno’s for Advent Prayer. We shall use the quiet and darkness of the building in a simple and imaginative way. The words we use from Scripture and in song will be few. The building will be heated (!). 7.00pm to 7.30pm – starting on Friday 1st. December Come and join in.

‘We need to find God. He cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature, trees, flowers, grass grow in silence. See the stars, the moon and sun, how they move in silence. The more we receive in silent prayer, the more we can give in our active life. We need silence to be able to touch souls. The essential thing is not what we say, but what God says to us and through us. All our words will be useless unless they come from within. Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness.’ - Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

ST JOHN’S MISSION CHURCH, FRON

It was lovely to welcome past and present members and friends of Fron Church to our Harvest Festival Service on Friday 22nd September, together with our guest preacher George Bearwood and members of Berriew Church Choir, who as usual looked resplendent in their choir robes and who contributed to the joyous atmosphere of praise and thanksgiving for all God’s good gifts. It was also good to welcome Esther back to Fron after her recent knee operation. The service was led by Peter Watkin, who it is always a pleasure to welcome back to Fron. The readings were given by Claire Morris and Helen. The young people of the church, - James, Millie- Grace, Finlay and Louise read a poem and prayer, The Berriew Choir sang ‘Lord of the Harvest’, and our guest George gave the address. The church had been beautifully dressed for Harvest Thanksgiving by Sylvia and Heather Mathews and Sandra and Lawrence Morris and after the service everyone enjoyed the harvest supper prepared by the lady members of the church, Sandra, Claire, Julie and Helen. Sylvia provided the home made plum wine which was very tasty!!! Our vicar Ven Peter gave a vote of thanks during the evening and we, at Fron thank everyone for joining in our harvest service of praise and thanksgiving. . Fron 120 Club

TEA SHOP STOP

As it turns chillier and we turn up our collars and don our scarves to protect us from the autumn weather, why not take a moment to yourself. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you at Pentre Llifior Methodist Chapel (well in the Preacher's Stable actually) on Wednesday 25th October and Wednesday 29th November, 2pm - 4pm.

You can drop in and relax for five minutes, or stop a while longer if you like, to have a cuppa and a chat about anything and everything. Come and tell us what you would like us to do for you as a local . Do you want a craft club, a reading group, a discussion group where you can chat about a variety of subjects or do you have any other ideas? We'd be pleased to hear them. As a chapel based group, we'd like to serve you, our chapel neighbours, in whatever way we can, if we can.

Mandy Thomas, Press Officer said " The "TEA SHOP STOP" is not a religious gathering, it's us opening our doors to you, so that you can come and meet us without any hesitation, to see who we are as individuals" Smiling she added, " But beware though, some of us are a little "nutty" in the nicest of ways, and mischievous too so expect a lot of laughter".

Children, as well as house-trained animals, are also welcome to come along and say Hi. So as the evenings draw in and we tuck ourselves away indoors away from the elements, consider having an afternoon's breath of fresh air with a bit of friendship added along the way.

Brooks and Bettws Presbyterian Chapels Joint Nativity/Carol Service - to be held on Sunday 3rd December at 2.30pm. All are very welcome to attend our Family Christmas Carol Service.

Young Folks News. The Little saints group will have met on the 22nd October – our theme was God’s world – from the beginning – we planned a little on creation and the created beasties!! Thanks to parents for their replies – it is so helpful to know who is coming – but we would rather have them there – so keep coming!!

The last meeting for this term will be on Saturday 9th December – with an Advent/ Christmas theme – and our annual party will as usual be held in Jan/Feb. – date in next month’s newsletter. But something to look forward to in the quieter days after the festive season! PLEASE put dates in diary – Thank you.

Remember that all Primary aged youngsters are welcome to come to all our meetings – if you live next door to someone encourage them to come along too!

Carol Café with our Teen Seekers

Many of you have attended the Carol Café in early December – we have planned to have another one this year – the date is SUNDAY 10th December 3.00pm in the Old School. Our older young people will host it – and there will be a donation collection towards their charity for this year – Marie Curie. They are planning to have a few stalls/ fund- raisers as before – and this will bring to an end their collection for this year. But MOST importantly it is the opportunity to bring folks from the community together over a cuppa – mince pies/scones – a chat – and the chance to choose and sing your favourite carols – as we help those in our community who are in need - Please put the date in your diaries – be great to see a good crowd there.

The Jesse Tree

Many of us will have at some time been curious about our family trees – and indeed may have composed one. If we open our bibles at the beginning of the first book of the New Testament – St Matthew’s Gospel – we shall find a long and seemingly endless list of names – which brings us information about Jesus, family – from way back in Old Testament times. Many of the names will be unknown to us- or not remembered if we have heard them –but there are some real characters that stand out – and if not since – you may remember them from stories you heard in school. The Jesse tree has been a tradition since medieval times - and points us towards Jesus arrival in our world – but why not come along and find out more

We are holding a course – a time together – as a preparation for CHRISTmas – in the Old School at 7.00pm – beginning on Monday 20th November – and then for the next weeks leading up to the final meeting on Monday 18th December. It will be a time to enjoy friendship, banter and hopefully learn and understand a little more. Open to all age groups – a cuppa and a biscuit – will be a part and we shall finish at 8.30pm – Do try to join us. If you can’t make them all – come to some!

Posada family

In past years, you may have hosted Mary and Joseph as they travel around our community – stopping at a different house each night during Advent. They will begin their journey on Advent Sunday leaving in their basket at the morning service on 3rd December. If you would like to receive the figures for a night please speak to Rev Peter or Rev Esther – or any of the church members – or simply sign up on the form at the back of church. We are grateful to Lilian who has made us a new set for this year – Thank you so much.

Mothers’ Union Berriew Branch September meeting.

Joyce welcomed everyone to the September meeting and hoped we had all enjoyed a good summer. After a short Devotional service a few business items were discussed. The Autumn council meeting is to be held on Thursday 16th November and Iris and Joyce hope to attend to represent Berriew. On Saturday November 18th Mothers’ Union are holding a coffee morning at The Old School from 10p.m. until 12noon. All proceeds will go to local charities so do come along to support this worthwhile cause and enjoy delicious home-made scones and cakes. The Advent lunch is to be held at Lakeside on Wednesday 29th November. There will be more details next month. We celebrate the Deanery Advent Service on Tuesday 5th December. This year it is to be held at Pool-Quay Church commencing at 3p.m. and everyone is very welcome. Joyce introduced the speakers for the afternoon who were old friends Elaine Williams and Irene Breakwell. They came armed with wonderful flowers and foliage ready to demonstrate some fantastic Autumnal flower arrangements. We all enjoyed their chat and stories while they presented such pleasing arrangements. It was a most relaxing afternoon and they were thanked by Joyce. Next month, Wednesday October 25th, the speaker will be Terry Hillier and his subject is ‘Experiences as an evacuee’ Everyone is most welcome so do come along! Ann Dixon

Berriew W.I October Meeting.

President Sue welcomed the members to a short meeting before the visitors arrived for the open evening. The sports teams, for dominoes and darts are practising hard for a spectacular season, although more reserves are needed. The Croquet competition was enjoyed by all although not placed in the final and the curling competition is next to take place. Everyone waits in anticipation as Sue reported that the new programme is nearly complete and will be available at the A.G.M. Lorraine, Lisa. Deb and Beryl attended a Crochet workshop and all agreed it had been excellent. Various members have booked to be entertained by ‘The Ukulele Man’ at the Group meeting at Ardleen on October 17th. The walking group is still very active and it is wonderful to see many friends who join us. We were lucky to have evening walks with meals at The Talbot and Lion afterwards. Mary, (650228) has a varied programme for next month so why not keep fit and join us! We were joined by members of other local W.I.s and one husband, John Sadler, to hear the speaker for the evening who was David Thomas, secretary of Montgomery Cricket Club. He gave a fascinating talk, illustrated by slides ,on the history of the club which is one of the oldest in Wales going back to 1840 and they still play at Lymore their original pitch. It was amazing to hear of the research that had been done into the 22 players who faced an United All England X1 in 1882. What the special event it was with many spectators, marquess and even Newtown Brass Band! Montgomery won by 62 runs!! Guests and members then enjoyed a delicious buffet supper. Next month, Wednesday November1st, it is the A.G.M. when we will have elections for next year’s committee followed by not too strenuous games. This is the time for joining W.I. so come along and see what we are about! Ann Dixon

The Jesse Tree

in Advent

Let’s spend some time together! Do you know where you come from? Lots of us like to know our ancestry

The Jesse Tree helps us to map out Jesus’ ancestry taking us back to the beginning of scripture – to Adam and Eve – Noah – Abraham and more. We can find the lineage all the way through to our Lord.

We plan to make a study of it during Advent and build our tree – one for you too! - ready to be displayed when Christmas comes. It will provide a visual journey through the years and help us prepare for our Lord’s birth.

Why not come along and hear the stories- they will help us to understand why Jesus came to earth, lived among us……and died for us that we might live in our God’s love and care and receive his forgivenes

Berriew shows itself at its best The 2017 Berriew Show was a day to remember. A full show ground, a packed exhibitors’ tent, vibrant horse, dog and sheep sections and wonderful weather all helped to bring over 2,500 people to Upper Rectory field on Saturday 26th August. Some wonderful comments were left on the Show’s Facebook page, and a full review has since taken place to see what we need to continue and keep or change and improve. Thank you to all those who made the day a success, including visitors who came from far and wide. 2018 is the show’s 70th Anniversary Year and on the 25th August 2018 we plan to put on a special day that builds on all the things that people love about The Berriew Show – the friendliness, the great exhibits, lots to see and do and all great value for money. If you have any Show Programmes or Schedules from years gone by, or any memories of shows from its earlier days, we would love to hear from you. There were 1340 exhibits in the marquee this year which was a great sight. The number of people entering the different classes was well up on last year too, including 46 newcomers. Each month we’ll be keeping you updated about the 2018 Anniversary Show so you can plan ahead, and also give hints and tips about classes to enter (the old favourites and new classes too) and how and when to prepare. Thank you for your support. We’re looking forward to another great show next year.

JUST THINKING.....

There's mischief ahead in this crazy old world Even sauce bottles stand on their heads And young folk don't wear their clothes into rags They buy them that way instead. You save what you can and purchase a car That license gives you a thrill But if roadworks and lights don't stop you The traffic jams certainly will! The government seem to be all tied up With a doubtful breakfast food. If they all eat oats once or twice a day They'd be in a better mood! Clothes in the shops are screamingly bright Sunglasses can not save your eyes. Twenty years or more in the sun might help You won't buy them now if you're wise! But the river Rhiew still flows as it did When people spoke face to face And when all the traffic has gone for a nap It's a beautiful, peaceful place. Lillian Dawson

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this letter. As most of you are aware I am moving to pastures new. My husband and I are relocating to Buckinghamshire to be closer to his family so that we can enjoy his grandchildren’s younger years. For those who are lucky enough to have grandchildren, you will appreciate that they grow up too quickly and every minute spent with them is precious. Although I am very sad to be leaving Kerry, I am looking forward to a new chapter in our lives. I have lived in Kerry for more than 20 years and have been very happy here and have made some dear friends, all of whom will be missed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my clients past and present for their support over the past 7 years of me trading as Healthy Steps. I have met some wonderful people and experienced a whole range of emotions from sadness to absolute hilarity. (I know you will each know where you fit on that scale!!!) Without your support I could not have experienced the success that has been Healthy Steps. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the good people of Buckinghamshire are as kind to me. For those of you who know how much I have been longing to becoming a Grandmother. ITS HAPPENED!!!! My daughter Louise, who lives in has just announced she’s expecting in March Next Year. I will close this letter now with thanks and much love to you all and hope that you all keep well and happy. Helen xxxxx

NB APOLOGIES for the error in the October newsletter: the spectacular 10-minute fireworks display at Bettws, previously held early in the evening, is now going to start rather later, making it more difficult to combine the two events.
