Dear Friends, I don’t know if any of you watched “The Silence” on BBC 2 recently; it was a programme about 5 people from various walks of life, believers and non-believers, who felt a need for something more in their lives. They spent 8 days in the Franciscan Friary of St Beuno near Holywell on a silent retreat led by their own Spiritual Directors. All 5 found the experience challenging and rewarding in their different ways but only 2 of them were able to find time in their lives to continue the periods of silence in the day. I have not been on a silent retreat, although those retreats I have been on have had times of silence during the day, but those I have spoken to who have experienced silent retreats have found them very valuable. Silence doesn’t seem to be “in fashion” these days, wherever we go there is music playing, in the shops, in cars, on the streets; when we get home the radio is on, the television is on, the i-pod, the i- phone; even in Church, I’ve noticed, the times where silence was the norm, before a service begins and after communion, have now become times of chatting. That special time of preparation, that time to allow ourselves to come into the presence of God, seems to have been lost and I think we are the poorer for it. In the hustle and bustle of our day to day life we all need some time to gather our thoughts, to make sense of the day. Even more so in our spiritual lives, in our time of worship, we need that time of silence and contemplation if we are to hear what God is saying to us. Our church services cannot be on the same lines as our busy lives, if we allow that to happen we are in danger of losing the very thing we seek – being in God’s presence. We are in the season of Advent now and all the preparations for Christmas are in full swing, our lives are even busier than ever, I pray that you will make some time in your day to silently meet with our Lord and Saviour and listen for His word, and take advantage of those times of preparation and contemplation in our services. The words of the Simon and Garfunkel song “Silence is Golden” are very true – it works wonders for me. I wish you and yours, peace and every blessing in this wonderful Christmas season Reverend Kathleen President, Mrs Muriel Evans, welcomed members to the November meeting and opened with a short service. The readers were Mrs Muriel Evans and Mrs Elizabeth Jones. Apologies were received from Mrs Bronwen Jones, Mrs Roberta Williams, Mrs Gwyneth Rees, Mrs Dor- othy Edwards, Rev’d Kathleen and Mrs Beryl Hughes. Minutes of the October meeting were read and accepted. Sympathy was expressed to Mrs Betty Hodge on her recent be- reavement. Elizabeth and Elfed Jones were congratulated on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. A letter of thanks was received from Gwynfor and Ann Jones for a very enjoyable Harvest Supper. Members agreed to take part in the St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festi- val. Our Christmas Dinner will be held on Saturday 8th January at the Maengwyn Café. Mrs Muriel Evans introduced Karen Davies who has been a Reiki Practitioner for 10 years. Reiki is complementary to conventional medicine, a hands on healing, facilitating the body to heal its self. Mrs Elizabeth Jones expressed thanks to Karen for an enlightening talk. The tea hostesses were Mrs Muriel Evans and Mrs Elizabeth Jones. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 14th December and will be our Carol Service. AH The Branch Leader, Mrs Joyce Price, welcomed members of Corris M.U, the Ladies Fellowship and Graig/Maengwyn Sisterhood, to our meeting on 18th November. The Rev’d Kathleen led the service. Mrs Joyce Price and Mrs Margaret Searson were thanked for arrang- ing the poppies in church for Remembrance Sunday. Mrs Ann Arm- strong and Mrs Dorothy Edwards reported on their visits to the sick and housebound. We were reminded of the Bishop’s visit on 28th December and the Christmas Tree Festival on 15th December. Rev’d Kathleen informed us of an internet shopping scheme whereby a donation is given by stores to the Gaza Dental Clinic Fund of the Church in Wales. Mrs Joyce Price introduced the guest speaker, the Reverend David Easton of Aberystwyth, who showed us some wonderful slides of the Scilly Isles where he spent seven years as a Methodist Minister. Mrs Margaret Hughes gave the vote of thanks. The tea hostesses were Mrs Ann Armstrong, Mrs Gwenda Price and Mrs Roberta Williams, who were thanked by Mrs Joyce Price. Our next meeting is the annual service of Lessons and Carols on the 15th December in church, followed by Christmas lunch at the Bowl- ing Club. Members are asked to bring a raffle prize. It was with deep sadness that we heard of the sudden death of Mr H.L. Fearn, 64 Maengwyn Street, on Wednesday 24th November. His funeral service will take place at St Peter’s Church on Thursday 2nd December at 2pm The parish lost another faithful member on 24th November when Miss Gaynor Griffiths, 17 Doll Street, passed away at the Alexandra Nursing Home, Tywyn.
