Art in France
May Term 2021
Trip Leader: Professor Katie Creyts [email protected]
Credits: 3 Credits, AR 381 meets Fine Arts or Global Perspectives 1 credit Prep Course, AR 300 Spring 21 (French 111 recommended but not required)
Our study will begin in the spring term with a 1-credit prep course designed to inform and enhance our tour with useful travel tips, journaling lessons, and research about art and the sites we will visit. We will then take off on our journey through the art world of France. We will learn about what inspires artists, like why Monet preferred the atmosphere of Paris in contrast to why Matisse loved the French Riviera. We will explore works from ancient marble sculptures to contemporary installations. We will also delve into culture with walks exploring architecture and time spent observing nature and passersby in parks and cafés. Students will keep a journal in which they respond to daily prompts in written, drawn, and watercolor formats.
I’m looking forward to so many things, but here’s a short list: • the Greek marbles in the Louvre – Artemis with a Doe! • The intricate architecture of the Gothic stone behemoth that is Chartres Cathedral • The rocky shore and cerulean blue water at the bottom of the Calenques hike which is just a tease for the breathtaking view of the sea from the deck of the Picasso Museum in Antibes
