3. Face and Screen: Toward a Genealogy of the Media Façade Craig Buckley Abstract Craig Buckley questions the tendency to see the multi-media façade as paradigmatic of recent developments in illumination and display technologies by reconsidering a longer history of the conflicting urban roles in which façades, as media have been cast. Over the course of the nineteenth century, façades underwent an optical redefinition parallel to that which defined the transformation of the screen. Buildings that sought to do away with a classical conception of the façade also emerged as key sites of experimentation with illuminated screening technologies. Long before the advent of the technical systems animating contemporary media envelopes, the façades of storefronts, cinemas, newspaper offices, union headquarters, and information centres were conceived as media surfaces whose ability to operate on and intervene in their surroundings became more important than the duty to express the building’s interior. Media façades have spread far beyond the dense com- mercial nodes with which they were once synonymous—New York’s Times Square, London’s Piccadilly Circus, Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, or Tokyo’s Shibuya. Some of the most ambitious media façades are today realized in places such as Birmingham, Graz, Tallinn, and Jeddah; Abu Dhabi, Tripoli, Montreal, and San Jose; Lima, Melbourne, Seoul, and Ningbo. Spring Break in Paris Friday, March 21st to Sunday, March 30th, 2014 What you’ll do . Friday, March 21st – You’ll depart from Huntsville or Nashville International Airport bound for Europe. Usually there is a stop in one of the major cities of the east coast in order to catch your trans-Atlantic flight to Paris. Saturday, March 22nd – After flying through the night, you’ll land at Charles de Gaulle International Airport. After collecting your luggage and passing through customs, you’ll transfer into the city, usually by train. On evening one, there’s a short time for resting and refreshing at the hotel before heading out into the city for dinner and some sightseeing. You will ascend the 58-story Tour Montparnasse for the best views of Paris as the sun goes down and the lights come on in the city. Sunday, March 23rd– You’ll visit the Royal Palace of Versailles, just outside of Paris. In addition to touring the palace itself, you’ll want to visit the gardens, since Sunday is the only day the world-famous fountains are turned on. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Grand and Petit Trianon, small palaces built by the king on the grounds of Versailles in order to escape the pressures of palace life. Also not to be missed is the village-like hameau of Marie Antoinette. Later, you’ll head back to Paris for dinner and a visit to the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Montmartre, the bohemian quarter of Paris. In Montmartre, you’ll also visit the Place du Tertre, where an artist will paint your portrait for a price. -

GEORGES-HENRI SOUTOU La diplomatie française et les diplomates français entre tradition et réforme Identité nationale, américanisation, européanisation, mondialisation: cette problémati- que est bien sûr au cœur de la diplomatie française depuis 1945. Celle-ci a été marquée évidemment par des évolutions et des adaptations, mais aussi par certaines continuités, en particulier le souci de maintenir l’identité nationale: la France a toujours été le moins atlantiste des pays d’Europe occidentale et le plus rétif au leadership américain; ses élites se sont en général méfiées de la mondialisation libérale, souhaitant, de Pierre Mendès France à François Mitterrand, promouvoir telle ou telle forme de »libéralisme organisé« limitant le jeu du marché, en particulier pour les matières premières, ainsi que pour les productions culturelles (»exception culturelle« et francophonie). Quant à l’européanisation, elle a constitué certainement un axe de la diplomatie et des diploma- tes français, mais elle est restée partielle et chargée d’arrière-pensées très »nationales«. De façon peut-être excessive, mais pas fausse, les partenaires de la France au sein de la CEE puis de l’Union européenne avaient (ont toujours) l’impression que Paris consi- dère l’Europe avant tout comme un levier permettant de prolonger son action et de diffuser son modèle; de Gaulle lui-même ne parlait-il pas de l’Europe comme d’un »levier d’Archimède« pour la France? Foster + Partners Bests Zaha Hadid and OMA in Competition to Build Park Avenue Office Tower BY KELLY CHAN | APRIL 3, 2012 | BLOUIN ART INFO We were just getting used to the idea of seeing a sensuous Zaha Hadid building on the corporate-modernist boulevard that is Manhattan’s Park Avenue, but looks like we’ll have to keep dreaming. An invited competition to design a new Park Avenue office building for L&L Holdings and Lemen Brothers Holdings pitted starchitect against starchitect (with a shortlist including Hadid and Rem Koolhaas’s firm OMA). In the end, Lord Norman Foster came out victorious. “Our aim is to create an exceptional building, both of its time and timeless, as well as being respectful of this context,” said Norman Foster in a statement, according to The Architects’ Newspaper. Foster described the building as “for the city and for the people that will work in it, setting a new standard for office design and providing an enduring landmark that befits its world-famous location.” The winning design (pictured left) is a three-tiered, 625,000-square-foot tower. With sky-high landscaped terraces, flexible floor plates, a sheltered street-level plaza, and LEED certification, the building does seem to reiterate some of the same principles seen in the Lever House and Seagram Building, Park Avenue’s current office tower icons, but with markedly updated standards. Only time will tell if Foster’s building can achieve the same timelessness as its mid-century predecessors, a feat that challenged a slew of architects as Park Avenue cultivated its corporate identity in the 1950s and 60s. -

The building in which it is situated has cultural as well as historic resonance: Constructed in the mid17th century, it was home to famed Barbizon School painter CharlesFrançois Daubigny in the mid 180os.
