On Dec 16, NIO o cially launched their first mass-market model: NIO ES8. The 7-seater high performance electric SUV is equipped with a number of industry-leading technologies, including an all-aluminium body and chassis. The car body and chassis’ aluminum sheet material is primarily provided by Novelis.
NIO is not the only automaker that has been dedicated to the development of the Chinese EV market. Last October, Volvo Car Group and its parent company, Geely, invested $753 million to develop the electric vehicle brand Polestar. They also built a manufacturing plant in Chengdu. Tesla, the world-leading electric vehicle manufacturer, also confirmed that it was working with the Shanghai municipal government on the potential of Tesla setting up a facility in Shanghai. It is clear that worldwide automakers are speeding up their e orts to develop electric vehicles to meet demands in China, the biggest EV market in the world.

Novelis Collaborates with NIO on the Next-generation EV: NIO ES8
In 2017, Novelis announced that they provided aluminum solutions for NIO’s electric SUV ES8, which would boost the EV supply. The aluminum material for the ES8 will come from Novelis' Changzhou plant, China's first facility dedicated to manufacturing heat-treated automotive sheet material. The aluminum will be featured in a wide range of structural components and parts on the auto body. The aluminum material can help improve the ES8’s range by enabling the car to achieve excellent strength, safety and performance. The launch of the NIO ES8 marks Novelis’ turn in becoming a supplier for China’s premium electric vehicles that feature an all-aluminum body thus bringing confidence and new capabilities to the growing EV market.
Novelis is more than a material supplier. Novelis closely collaborated with NIO at the ES8’s design stage. Over the past several months, experts from Novelis China, the United States, and Europe worked together with NIO’s engineers to complete various material tests and develop new aluminum alloys, which successfully improved the ES8’s strength, safety and range.

Aluminium materials that passed NIO’s tests will be produced in Novelis’s Changzhou plant.
