RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

“The sacraments of Christian initiation — Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist — lay the foundations of every Christian life. . . . The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity.” ( of the Catholic Church, 1212.)

Our Catholic faith teaches us that the sacraments are the source of our life and of our identity as members of the Body of Christ. While many of us received Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion as children, the Catholic Church also welcomes adults to become members of the Church by receiving these sacraments of Christian initiation. They are invited to receive instruction and prepare for these sacraments through a program called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).

Our parish RCIA program is designed with four types of people in mind:

1. Adults who wish to be baptized. People who have been brought in non-Christian religions (Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, etc.), or perhaps with no religion at all, are invited to become catechumens. They prepare throughout the year to be baptized at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening. They also receive Confirmation and Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil.

2. Adults who have been baptized in another Christian church or . Baptized Christians are invited to be received into with the Catholic Church, by making a profession of faith in what the Catholic Church teaches on Easter Sunday. At their reception, the candidates also receive Confirmation and Holy Communion.

3. Adult Catholics who need to complete the sacraments of Christian initiation. People who were baptized in the Catholic Church as children, but have not yet received Holy Communion and/or Confirmation, prepare to be confirmed by the of Philadelphia, at the on Pentecost Sunday (50 days after Easter).

4. Catholics who want to learn more about the Faith. Often, Catholic people who have already received all of the sacraments of Christian initiation take part in RCIA to come to a deeper understanding of the Faith. This is a valuable experience especially for people who have been away from the Church for some time.

If these categories describe you—or a friend or family member—consider taking part in RCIA this year. RCIA sessions will meet on Wednesdays from September to May, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. Each evening includes time for shared prayer, reflection on the Sacred Scripture and volunteer catechists, who will help you to discover the richness of the message of Jesus Christ and to respond to His call to be converted and grow in His likeness.

Registration is now underway for RCIA. Sessions begin in mid-September. For more information or to register, call Deacon Vincent Thompson at (215) 564-1758 or [email protected] or call the parish house at 215-765-4568.

Sponsor – a – Student Program

The value of Catholic education is a forever opportunity that a student takes with them throughout the rest of their lives.

Catholic education is a blessing, a blessing not all can afford! Therefore, the Saint Francis Xavier School Advisory Board started a new ‘Sponsor a Student’ Program in order to help those who may not otherwise be able to afford this opportunity. Your tuition contribution will go directly to a qualifying child in need, allowing them to begin, or continue their Catholic education. Your gift will also help to keep enrollment at sustainable levels, helping to keep alive one of the oldest continually operated Catholic parish schools in the Western Hemisphere!

Those students who want the advantage of Catholic education, but who need financial assistance will benefit directly from your contribution. Indirectly, the entire Catholic education system, our communities and our families, will all share the positive impact. In addition, of course, you will benefit with the satisfaction of knowing your compassion has made a real difference in a child’s life.

To contribute please complete this form and send your tax deductible donation to St. Francis Xavier School or place in the Sunday collection basket (envelopes are available in the back of church).
