PREFACE 1. These rules shall be called CNI-SBSS Employee’s Service Rules and shall be applicable to all the employees of the CNI- SBSS. 2. These rules shall supersede all or any previous rules or practices which have been in operation on matters covered by those rules. II. religions Article Dalit Theology and Indian Christian History in Dialogue: Constructive and Practical Possibilities Andrew Ronnevik Department of Religion, Baylor University, Waco, TX 76706, USA; [email protected] Abstract: In this article, I consider how an integration of Dalit theology and Indian Christian history could help Dalit theologians in their efforts to connect more deeply with the lived realities of today’s Dalit Christians. Drawing from the foundational work of such scholars as James Massey and John C. B. Webster, I argue for and begin a deeper and more comprehensive Dalit reading and theological analysis of the history of Christianity and mission in India. My explorations—touching on India’s Thomas/Syrian, Catholic, Protestant, and Pentecostal traditions—reveal the persistence and complexity of caste oppression throughout Christian history in India, and they simultaneously draw attention to over-looked, empowering, and liberative resources that are bound to Dalit Christians lives, both past and present. More broadly, I suggest that historians and theologians in a variety of contexts—not just in India—can benefit from blurring the lines between their disciplines. Gregorian Pontifical University, Rome Introduction Exactly 450 years ago, more precisely on the 15th of August 1549, Xavier set foot on the coast of Southern Japan, arriving at the city of Kagoshima situated in the kingdom of Satsuma. At that point in time Japan was politically divided. National unity under an Emperor did not exist. The great families of the daimyos, or “feudal lords” held sway in the main regions. The Shimazu family dominated the region of Kyúshú, the large island in Southern Japan where Xavier disembarked. Xavier was accompa- nied by Anjiró, a Japanese native of this region whom he had met in Malacca in 1547. Once a fervent Buddhist, Anjiró was now a Christian, and had accompanied Xavier to Goa where he was baptised and took the name Paulo de Santa Fé. Anjiró’s family, his friends etc. helped Xavier and the two missionaries who accompanied him (Father Cosme de Torres and Brother Juan Fernández) to instantly feel at home in the city of Kagoshima. -

In the Catholic tradition of sainthood, the name of St. Francis Xavier is taken with great respect. In many parts of the world, he is not only revered by the Christians, but people from the other faith also give him love and much respect. At a time, when travelling to another countries was considered as a difficult task, St. Francis Xavier travelled and preached Christianity in the lesser known parts of the world. Born on 7 April 1506 in a noble family of Navarra, he saw the loss of the independence of the contemporary Navarre state. When he was nineteen years old, he was sent to Paris for higher studies in Colegio de Santa Barbara and there he come in contact with St. Ignatius de Loyola. Later on, they became good friends and in a discussion when Father Ignatius told him that what is the use of wining the whole world if someone lose his soul? These words made him think much and he left showing his opulence. Later on, the blessed saint dedicated much of his time in studies and in 1534 he confessed and received communion with some of his friends. Initially he had plans to go to Jerusalem, but due to the ongoing war between Venetians and Turks, they had no op- tion rather to end this plan. After meeting with father Ignatius, he decided to stay in Italy and to spread the message of Christianity with zeal in universities. -

Concluding Common Joint Statement of the Commission for the Dialogue between the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht Editorial Note: The sub-commission (Rev. Sam T. Koshy, Rev. Dr. Adrian Suter) has worked on this statement and considers this version to be the final one. Other than the correction of errors and the adaption of the reference style in the footnotes in case of a printed publication, no more changes shall be made. Introduction: A journey towards a relationship of communion between the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht The ecumenical journey between the two churches began with the meeting of Archbishop Dr. Joris Vercammen, President of the International Bishops’ Conference of the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht, and Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus, then Suffragan Metropolitan (now of blessed memory), of the Mar Thoma Church in the context of the World Council of Churches, in 2005. Later, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa continued the contact with the Union of Utrecht. On the invitation of the Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church, a delegation from the Union of Utrecht, which included the Archbishop of Utrecht, 1 the bishop of the Old Catholic Church of Austria, Dr. John Okoro, the Rev. Prof. Günter Esser and the Rev. Ioan Jebelean, visited the Mar Thoma Church in 2006 and 2008. A delegation of the Mar Thoma Church made a reciprocal visit to the Old Catholic Church. The Rt. Rev.
