Robert Eric Frykenberg, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2P08, 564 pp. UNTIL now, no one book in English has informative for the beginner, they seem to want attempted to cover the vast topic of Christianity to belong to another book. Socio-religious desegregation in an immediate postwar town Jaffna, Sri Lanka Delon MADAVAN PhD candidate and Junior Lecturer in Geography Université Paris-IV Sorbonne Laboratoire Espaces, Nature et Culture (UMR 8185) [email protected] Abstract The cease-fire agreement of 2002 between the Sri Lankan state and the separatist movement of Liberalisation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), was an opportunity to analyze the role of war and then of the cessation of fighting as a potential process of transformation of the segregation at Jaffna in the context of immediate post-war period. Indeed, the armed conflict (1987-2001), with the abolition of the caste system by the LTTE and repeated displacements of people, has been a breakdown for Jaffnese society. The weight of the hierarchical castes system and the one of religious communities, which partially determine the town's prewar population distribution, the choice of spouse, social networks of individuals, values and taboos of society, have been questioned as a result of the conflict. -

UNLIKELY COSMPOLITANS: MIGRATION AND MORALITY AMONGST SRI LANKAN CATHOLICS A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Bernardo Enrique Brown August, 2013 © 2013 Bernardo Enrique Brown ii UNLIKELY COSMOPOLITANS: MIGRATION AND MORALITY AMONGST SRI LANKAN CATHOLICS Bernardo Enrique Brown, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2013 Sri Lankan Catholic families that successfully migrated to Italy encountered multiple challenges upon their return. Although most of these families set off pursuing very specific material objectives through transnational migration, the difficulties generated by return migration forced them to devise new and creative arguments to justify their continued stay away from home. This ethnography traces the migratory trajectories of Catholic families from the area of Negombo and suggests that – due to particular religious, historic and geographic circumstances– the community was able to develop a cosmopolitan attitude towards the foreign that allowed many of its members to imagine themselves as ―better fit‖ for migration than other Sri Lankans. But this cosmopolitanism was not boundless, it was circumscribed by specific ethical values that were constitutive of the identity of this community. For all the cosmopolitan curiosity that inspired people to leave, there was a clear limit to what values and practices could be negotiated without incurring serious moral transgressions. My dissertation traces the way in which these iii transnational families took decisions, constantly navigating between the extremes of a flexible, rootless cosmopolitanism and a rigid definition of identity demarcated by local attachments. Through fieldwork conducted between January and December of 2010 in the predominantly Catholic region of Negombo, I examine the work that transnational migrants did to become moral beings in a time of globalization, individualism and intense consumerism. -

Karimnagar Diocese 133 years and Beyond: Church of South India Karimnagar Diocese A Story of Transformation (1879-2012) The Wesleyan Methodist Missionaries from England began working since 1879 in the Districts of Hyderabad, Medak, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Nalgonda. As a result of their mission work Churches were established along with Schools and Hospitals. After the formation of Church of South India in year 1947, Karimnagar and Nalgonda areas from Medak were annexed to the Dornakal Diocese. There was a small village, by name ‘Gulshanabad’, about 85 kilometres from Hyderabad in the erstwhile ‘Nizam’s Dominion’ in the Telangana region of todaýs Andhra Pradesh. According to one tradition, it was a village where flowers were grown on the banks of the rivulet Pasuperu for the rulers of that time. It was perhaps a typical Muslim village with a few people from other communities. The old mosque on top of the hill, and the existence of no other major temple in the village, is an indication to this tradition. The name ‘Gulshanabad’ means ‘a place of flowers’. With the coming of the Methodist missionaries, notably Charles Walker Posnett in 1896, the Story of Gulshanabad to Medak began. William Burgess, a British Methodist missionary from Madras, with Benjamin Wesley, an Indian evangelist, came to Hyderabad in 1879. A year later came Benjamin Pratt. This trio laid the foundations for the Church in Secunderabad and Hyderabad, although British chaplaincies for their military existed long before. The pictures of William Burgess and Benjamin Pratt are on display in the CSI Wesley Church, Clock Tower, and Secunderabad. -

Socio-economic Characteristics of Tribal Communities That Call Themselves Hindu Vinay Kumar Srivastava Religious and Development Research Programme Working Paper Series Indian Institute of Dalit Studies New Delhi 2010 Foreword Development has for long been viewed as an attractive and inevitable way forward by most countries of the Third World. As it was initially theorised, development and modernisation were multifaceted processes that were to help the “underdeveloped” economies to take-off and eventually become like “developed” nations of the West. Processes like industrialisation, urbanisation and secularisation were to inevitably go together if economic growth had to happen and the “traditional” societies to get out of their communitarian consciousness, which presumably helped in sustaining the vicious circles of poverty and deprivation. Tradition and traditional belief systems, emanating from past history or religious ideologies, were invariably “irrational” and thus needed to be changed or privatised. Developed democratic regimes were founded on the idea of a rational individual citizen and a secular public sphere. Such evolutionist theories of social change have slowly lost their appeal. It is now widely recognised that religion and cultural traditions do not simply disappear from public life. They are also not merely sources of conservation and stability. At times they could also become forces of disruption and change. The symbolic resources of religion, for example, are available not only to those in power, but also to the weak, who sometimes deploy them in their struggles for a secure and dignified life, which in turn could subvert the traditional or establish structures of authority. Communitarian identities could be a source of security and sustenance for individuals. -

This report by the CRC20BS (Balance Sheet) Collective, is being submitted as an alternative to that submitted by the Government. The CRC 20 BS collective (consisting of 173 organizations and 215 children associated with them) came together to undertake a review of the two decades of implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It came out with a three volume report titled Twenty Years of CRC- A Balance Sheet in 2011. The process of pulling together the Balance Sheet through consultations with NGOs and children was undertaken by HAQ: Centre for Child Rights Delhi, supported by terre des hommes, Germany. The present shadow report is an update of the Balance Sheet of 2011 (already sent to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child). -

Mixology and Theology Michael Coffey Week Six: Gin and Tonic, and Postcolonial Theology Mixology: Gin and Tonic The gin and tonic is a cocktail with a very colonial history. The British colonized India during the 19th cen- tury after a long period of trade and control through the British East India Company. Malaria was a prob- lem for the British and they depended on quinine, a bitter extract from the bark of the cinchona tree. Qui- nine powder was so bitter it was added to water and sometimes sweetened. To make it more palatable, and enjoyable, the tonic water was added to the Brit’s new favorite spirit: gin. Add a lime and there you go. Today’s tonic water has less quinine in it and is less bitter than the original. Also, fun fact: Quinine fluo- resces, so shine an ultraviolet light on it and see what happens. Gin and Tonic 2 oz gin 4 oz tonic water 1/4 lime Add ice to a tall glass. Squeeze lime over it and add lime wedge to ice. Add gin, then tonic water. Stir gen- tly to maintain the fizz in the tonic water. Gin and Tonic Mocktail 6 oz tonic water 1/4 lime 2 dashes orange bitters 1 rosemary sprig Add ice to a tall glass. Squeeze lime over it and add lime wedge to ice. Add rosemary sprig, then tonic wa- ter, then orange bitters. Stir gently.
