As an interdisciplinary work of anthropology and history, it draws from multi-site archival and ethnographic research. Each chapter focuses on a particular moment or aspect of transnational dalit activism and its translation of caste- based discrimination into an internationally recognized wrong. Through an exploration of the affective and political bonds activists have developed with communities outside of India, and the simultaneous use and critique of human rights in dalit activism, this dissertation demonstrates how the global field has become critical to the conceptualization and articulation of social justice. Engagements in the global field also set this activism apart from the dominant anti-caste movement of modern India – that of B.R. Ambedkar’s movement for dalit rights. Specifically, in terms of its political strategy, identity politics, and conceptualization of caste, transnational dalit activism departs from Ambedkar’s movement. First, in terms of political strategy, this activism uses human rights discourse to communicate the problems and aspirations of dalits. It seeks support from institutions beyond the nation-state, and it internationalizes caste-based discrimination, ostensibly to connect with social justice movements outside of India and to generate international pressure on the Indian state to act in the interests of dalits. Second, regarding identity politics, this activism emphasizes a similarity in political identity

    Post-capitalist Development in Latin America's Left Turn: beyond Peronism and the Magical State DRAFT Manuel Larrabure, PhD Submitted to Development and Change on September 21, 2017 Reference number: DECH-17-421 Abstract The persistence of struggles by popular sectors in the context of the pink tide has generated ongoing debates about how to interpret the region's left turn. For some, these movements are understood as forming part of a tense but ultimately productive relationship with left governments in the pursuit of post-neoliberal development. For others, it points to potentially irreconcilable political differences, and neoliberal continuities in pink tide governance. In this paper, I address these debates by presenting research on two social movements: Argentina's recuperated enterprises and Venezuela's popular economy. Using a Marxian-inspired, situated case study approach, I argue that these movements can be understood as 'post-capitalist struggles', that is, attempts to articulate new forms of democracy and cooperation that point beyond capitalism. As such, these movements push beyond the politics of Kirchnerismo and Chavismo that reproduce, albeit in new forms, the limitations to post-capitalist development associated with Peronism and the 'magical state'. These movements therefore reveal both the region's potential post-capitalist future, and the barriers that stand against it in the context of the region's latest phase of development. Lastly, these cases highlight the need to both re-assert and re-define one of the pink tide's political goals, namely regional integration. Orientalism When Sir William Jones proposed, in his famous third presidential address before the Asiatick Society in 1786, the thesis that the Sanskrit language was related to the classical European languages, Greek and Latin, and indeed to Gothic, Celtic and Persian, this was later received not only as a milestone in the history of linguistics. This newly found linguistic relationship represented at the same time the most important theoretical foundation on which European Orientalists reconstructed a pre-history of South Asia, the main elements of which achieved general recognition in the second half of the 19th century. According to this reconstruction, around the middle of the second millenium BCE, Indo-European tribes who called themselves a¯rya (Aryans) migrated from the north into India where they progressively usurped the indigenous popula- tion and became the new ruling class. In colonial India this so-called “Aryan migration theory” met with an astonishing and diverse reception within the identity-forming discourses of different people groups. The reconstruction of an epoch lying almost three to four thousand years in the past metamorphosed, in the words of Jan Assman, into an ‘internalized past’, that is, through an act of semioticization the Aryan migration was transformed into a ‘hot memory’ in Levi-Strauss’s sense, and thereby into a ‘founding history, i.e. a myth’ (Assman 1992:75–77).

    INTRODUCTION Dalit Literature: Dalit writing is a post-Independence literary phenomenon. The emergence of Dalit literature has a great historical significance. The causes and effects leading to the age-old existence of oppression and despair of the lives of marginalized class of nation’s vast population are also observed in many other parts of the world. Arjun Dangle has defined Dalit literature as: “Dalit literature is one which acquaints people with the caste system and untouchability in India… It matures with a sociological point of view and is related to the principles of negativity, rebellion and loyalty to science , thus finally ending as revolutionary .” Most of the marginalized groups all over the world have a similar system of oppression but the titles are different as per the class and class divide. In India it was under the pretext of the Cast and in the western World it was under the name of the Race. Inequality was the main source of this marginality which led to insecurity, injustice and exploitation. Marginalized sections were always on the periphery and distanced from the power centers. In this research work the main objective is to draw similarities between the politics of Caste and Race in Indian Dalits and the American Blacks. Dalits were always on the marginalized ‘other’ side of the Indian society. So when they started voicing after centuries of silence, about themselves, we have the literature depicting assertion of human rights, self-pride, revolt against social injustice, chronicles of personal and collective suffering, and hopes and aspirations for a new society devoid of discrimination.

    Socio-economic Characteristics of Tribal Communities That Call Themselves Hindu Vinay Kumar Srivastava Religious and Development Research Programme Working Paper Series Indian Institute of Dalit Studies New Delhi 2010 Foreword Development has for long been viewed as an attractive and inevitable way forward by most countries of the Third World. As it was initially theorised, development and modernisation were multifaceted processes that were to help the “underdeveloped” economies to take-off and eventually become like “developed” nations of the West. Processes like industrialisation, urbanisation and secularisation were to inevitably go together if economic growth had to happen and the “traditional” societies to get out of their communitarian consciousness, which presumably helped in sustaining the vicious circles of poverty and deprivation. Tradition and traditional belief systems, emanating from past history or religious ideologies, were invariably “irrational” and thus needed to be changed or privatised. Developed democratic regimes were founded on the idea of a rational individual citizen and a secular public sphere. Such evolutionist theories of social change have slowly lost their appeal. It is now widely recognised that religion and cultural traditions do not simply disappear from public life. They are also not merely sources of conservation and stability. At times they could also become forces of disruption and change. The symbolic resources of religion, for example, are available not only to those in power, but also to the weak, who sometimes deploy them in their struggles for a secure and dignified life, which in turn could subvert the traditional or establish structures of authority. Communitarian identities could be a source of security and sustenance for individuals.
