The description of this commentary should perhaps have been clearer that this is more a Bible with some comments and some somewhat lenghtier commentary , rather than a commentary per se: the focus is very much the Bible, rather than having the Bible, plus a lot of commentary, with the extra value being in the commentary as opposed to it being "just" a Bible. Gregorian Pontifical University, Rome Introduction Exactly 450 years ago, more precisely on the 15th of August 1549, Xavier set foot on the coast of Southern Japan, arriving at the city of Kagoshima situated in the kingdom of Satsuma. At that point in time Japan was politically divided. National unity under an Emperor did not exist. The great families of the daimyos, or “feudal lords” held sway in the main regions. The Shimazu family dominated the region of Kyúshú, the large island in Southern Japan where Xavier disembarked. Xavier was accompa- nied by Anjiró, a Japanese native of this region whom he had met in Malacca in 1547. Once a fervent Buddhist, Anjiró was now a Christian, and had accompanied Xavier to Goa where he was baptised and took the name Paulo de Santa Fé. Anjiró’s family, his friends etc. helped Xavier and the two missionaries who accompanied him (Father Cosme de Torres and Brother Juan Fernández) to instantly feel at home in the city of Kagoshima.

  • The Miracles of St. Francis Xavier in San Francisco Javier, El Sol En Oriente, a Jesuit Comedy
THE MIRACLES OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER IN SAN FRANCISCO JAVIER, EL SOL EN ORIENTE, A JESUIT COMEDY Sabyasachi Mishra GRISO-Universidad de Navarra Saints across the world are revered by the people for their selfless service towards humanity. In the Catholic tradition of sainthood, the name of St. Francis Xavier is taken with great respect. In many parts of the world, he is not only revered by the Christians, but people from the other faith also give him love and much respect. At a time, when travelling to another countries was considered as a difficult task, St. Francis Xavier travelled and preached Christianity in the lesser known parts of the world. Born on 7 April 1506 in a noble family of Navarra, he saw the loss of the independence of the contemporary Navarre state. When he was nineteen years old, he was sent to Paris for higher studies in Colegio de Santa Barbara and there he come in contact with St. Ignatius de Loyola. Later on, they became good friends and in a discussion when Father Ignatius told him that what is the use of wining the whole world if someone lose his soul? These words made him think much and he left showing his opulence. Later on, the blessed saint dedicated much of his time in studies and in 1534 he confessed and received communion with some of his friends. Initially he had plans to go to Jerusalem, but due to the ongoing war between Venetians and Turks, they had no op- tion rather to end this plan. After meeting with father Ignatius, he decided to stay in Italy and to spread the message of Christianity with zeal in universities.

  • St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552) —The Most Famous of Them All
St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552) —The most famous of them all A founding member and the first great missionary of the Society of Jesus, Francis Xavier had a remarkable journey through life, preaching and baptizing across India Southeast Asia, and Japan, tending to lepers, clashing with Buddhists and harvesting souls. For the most part, he had basked in an infectious optimism; on occasion, weary, ill, and homesick, he had bordered on despair. — Jonathan Wright Ignatius Loyola and Francis Xavier are often considered co-founders of the Society of Jesus and they seemed themselves together to exemplify different and important aspects of Jesuit life, perhaps modeling Ignatius’s most fundamental teaching that individuals have to find the way that suits them best—an echo of the “flexible, not rigid” constitutive element of “our way of proceeding” found in the Constitutions of 1558. The Jesuits were founded as a missionary order with a fourth vow by which professed members of the Society obliged themselves to “special obedience to the pope regarding missions.” This was a central aspect of what they were about. The Jesuits’ fourth vow was in essence a vow of mobility, that is, a commitment to travel anywhere in the world for the “help of souls,” yet Francis was the only one of the original band of Ignatius’s companions to leave Europe. Even before Pope Paul III granted final and official approval of the Society of Jesus in 1540, he sought Ignatius’s help in responding to a request Paul received from John III, King of Portugal. John wanted to send Jesuits to his colony of Goa on the west coast of India.

CHURCH HISTORY FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL Published by: Advocate John Joseph Nalloor April, 1951: Mr. T. P. Varghese Master donates Agathimandiram to the Mar Thoma Church. The Late Mr. T. P. Varghese of Nellikunnu near Trichur established the “Ravi Varma Institute Home” in 1941 in his 8 acre property for charitable work. For 10 years he continued his noble work and in April 1951 donated the entire institution and all its properties free of cost to the Mar Thoma Church which later became the Trichur Ravi Varma Agathimandiram. At present more than 40 inmates are living at this Agathimandiram. 1 April, 1909: Birth of Rev. K. T. Thomas, Karimparampil Anaprampal, Sihora Ashram. Rev. Thomas became a priest in 1941. He is one of the founders of the Sihora Ashram in Madhya Pradesh. Achen led the formation of many of our parishes in North India, including Delhi, Jabalpur, Bhilai, Bilaspur, Nagpur, Katni, Agra, Bombay, Poona and Kirkee. He was called home on 8 February, 1989, and was buried in Sihora. 1 April, 1548: Parliament orders the publication of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Though Thomas Cranmer is rightly credited with the final form of the BCP, he worked with a committee of scholars, including Reformer Martin Bucer, to shape his famous liturgy. The Book of Common Prayer is the common title of a number of prayer books of the Church of England and used throughout the Anglican Communion. The first book, published in 1549, in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the breach with Rome.

  • Saint Francis Xavier 16Th Century Japan and China
“A Great Cloud of Witnesses” A Historical Series of the Murals on the Walls of Holy Comforter-Saint Cyprian Church Saint Francis Xavier 16th Century Japan and China Born in 1506 to a noble Spanish family, St. Francis was a very intelligent boy whose parents cultivated this talent by sending him to study in Paris. There he excelled in his studies and became a professor. In Paris, St. Francis also met St. Igna- tius of Loyola, the future founder of the Jesuits, as St. Ignatius was finishing his studies and dreaming of starting a society wholly devoted to saving souls. St. Ignatius tried to convince St. Francis to join him, but St. Francis resisted. His head was full of ambitious thoughts, and he bantered and rallied St. Ignatius on all occasions, ridiculing the meanness and poverty in which he lived. St. Ignatius repaid his contempt with meekness and kindness, and con- tinued to repeat sometimes to him, "What will it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" This talk soon wore down St. Francis, yet it was not without many serious thoughts and griev- ous struggles that his soul was overcome by the power of those eter- nal truths. Under the guidance of St. Ignatius, St. Francis reformed his ways, and became a member of the new Society, the Jesuits. They traveled to Rome and worked tirelessly in preaching and ministering to the poor. At the request of the King of Portugal, St. Ignatius sent St. Francis to take part in a Portuguese mission to the East Indies.
