Mulch retains moisture for healthy trees Right Wrong

Placing mulch around trees can help them maintain a healthy condition throughout the growing season. Mulching slows evaporation of soil moisture, which increases the availability of both moisture and soil nutrients for utilization by the tree’s root system. A word of caution: don’t pile mulch against the trunk of the tree. Also, excessive mulch (more than four inches) can inhibit the fl ow of oxygen to the root system, and cause decay and smothering.

Pearl Henderson, chair of the Cultural Awareness Commission, commented, “Unity Day is a great way to celebrate the diversity of our community. The food, entertainment and people are what make Hoffman Estates so special.” Mayor William D. McLeod echoed her sentiment: “The Village is very proud of its diverse culture, and each year we celebrate Unity Day in heart- warming fashion. I strongly encourage all residents to attend this meaningful event.” A message from Mayor McLeod
