In 1966, Junior Wells was at something of a turning point. He’d begun his professional music career fifteen or so years earlier, and enjoyed some early attention as a member of Muddy Waters’ Reaction Report prestigious band, then via his own recordings for the States label - both endeavors now counted among the highpoints of the classic Chicago blues era. As the ‘50s waned and the ‘60s dawned, he’d rolled with the musical punches, and adapted his style to the more pop and soul-oriented sounds then Louis Myer’s guitar is on the nail, emanating from the black Chicago music scene. In 1965, he recorded the groundbreaking Delmark while Wells is vocally beseeching; with help from a young Buddy Guy, and began crossing over to younger, his harmonica proves just how whiter audience with his mixture of deep blues feeling and contemporary funkiness. It was with Junior up front that they’d first become a force to be recording of the legendary Junior reckoned with; it was the fact that they were already pushing the blues envelope and bringing the Wells backed by a top-notch R & B music to a younger, hipper audience that inspired Little Walter to hire them intact as his first band (and outfit in the Aces, both the artist and send Junior to Muddy) in 1952. CHESTRA JASON ADASIEWICZ Sun Rooms (DELMARK CD 593) Features Jason on vibraphone, Mike Reed on drums, and Nate McBride on bass. This Chicago jazz trio formed in 2008, first experimenting as a free improvising trio, and later focused attention on arranging tunes that Adasiewicz wrote during his wife’sfirst pregnancy in the summer of 2009. In addition, the trio plays homage to , Duke Ellington, and Hasaan Ibn Ali—a pianist that was only documented once in his life, in 1964 with Max Roach. Sun Rooms is Adasiewicz’s first release on Delmark as a leader, but he is not a stranger to the label. He is currently a member of bands lead by Josh Berman, Rob Mazurek, and Nicole Mitchell. “Adasiewicz has a tone and sense of phrasing that is unlike anyone on the instrument currently active, his sense of melody wistful and attack pelting with equal parts Milt Jackson and Khan Jamal.” —The Austinist CD: 0-38153-0593-2-3

BRAD GOODE Tight Like This (DELMARK DE 594) Jazz trumpeter Brad Goode is back with his fourth Delmark CD, Tight Like This (yes, the same “Tight Like This” recorded by Louis Armstrong’s Hot 5). He is accompanied by Adrean Farrugia, piano; Kelly Sill, bass; Anthony Lee, drums. A review of Brad’s prior Delmark CD said: “Goode’scommand of the trumpet allows for plenty of risk-taking moments, drenched with technical astonishment and raw emotion. With an abundance of melodic ideas, the Chicago native walks a musical tightrope, creating a rush of improvised suspense. His free-flowing approach, most notably on ‘I Remember You’ and ‘No Idea’, is playful and refreshingly unsentimen- tal. Nature Boy (Delmark 578) emphasizes everything genuine going on in jazz today. Goode and company areperforming at an incomparable level, at once virtuosic and innovative.” —John Barron, All About Jazz Also available: Hypnotic Suggestion (567), Shock Of The New (440).
