Comparison institutions are based on data compiled by the use of national data sets (National Center for Education Statistics databases, data exchange groups, ad hoc data collection) and personal judgment. Variables to devise groups may include: budgets (endowment, tuition, fees, , appropriations), location, selectivity, graduation rates, retention rates, teaching loads, size (students, faculty, facilities, campus), degree levels, programs, mission (liberal arts, religious) among other areas. Derived lists typically fall into one of four categories:

❖ Predetermined – Institutions are arranged together for some purpose (e.g., athletic conference, geographic proximity, Carnegie classification) → for example, Atlantic Coast Conference list ❖ Competitor – Compete for students, faculty, or finances → for example, Top Cross Applicant list, Tuition/ Room & Board list ❖ Peer – Similar in role and scope or mission → for example, Jesuit list ❖ Aspirational – Dissimilar to the home institution, but worthy of emulation → for example, US News & World Report list
