The chronology of the Civil War often reads like a listing of battles, generals, and politi- cians. Several events in 1864, however, reveal the very real contributions to the war of women. Let’s take a look at some of these events and what they have to say about the women of the Civil War.

Women wrote and sent gifts to their men fighting in the war, and they supported the sanitary fairs that were a principal means of raising funds and collecting food, cloth- ing, bandages, and other supplies to be dis- tributed to the troops through the United States Sanitary Commission. On January 4, 1864, the Washington Chronicle reported that President Abraham Lincoln attended Ladies Sanitary Fair in nation’s capital. Lincoln turned his attention again to the role of women in November, when on the 21st he wrote a letter of consolation to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, a Boston widow whose Confederate spy Rosie O’Neal Greeham with her youngest daughter in thr Old Capitol Prison five sons were thought to have died in the in 1862. war. Lincoln wrote: “I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.”

Some women were directly involved in the war effort. Some, like Rose O’Neal Greenhow, were spies. Mrs. Greenhow, a Confederate spy, passed information that helped in- sure the Confederate victory at the First Battle of Manassas. Later captured by detective Allan Pinkerton, she was imprisoned prior to being sent to Richmond. In 1863–64 she traveled in Europe on a diplomatic mission for the Confederacy. The ship on which she returned to America ran aground at the mouth of the Cape Fear River in . On October 1, 1864, she drowned when the rowboat in which she was trying to reach shore capsized.

Other women, concealing their identity, enlisted as sol- diers. On September 6, 1864, for example, President Lincoln ordered that Mary Wise, who had served five months in the 34th Indiana Regiment, be paid for her service. Even though women weren’t legally permitted to enlist, hundreds of women like Mary Wise served in the Union and Confederate armies. Some succeeded in hiding their identities until they were killed or wounded in battle. Others served for the duration of the war.

Francis Clayton was one of many women who disguised their identity to serve in the military during the Civil War. boston public library

A tragic accident on , 1864 in Washington, D.C., revealed another important role women performed in the Civil War as workers in war plants. Nearly a hundred years before Rosie the Riveter captured the nation’s attention, women war workers contributed to the manufacture of munitions for Union and Confederate forces. The work was dangerous as shown by the June 17th explosion at the Washington Arsenal that killed twenty-one young women.

The Washington Arsenal explosion was not an isolated incident. An explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal in Pennsylvania on September 17, 1862, killed more than seventy workers, mostly young women; on November 5, 1862, the arsenal at Jackson, , exploded killing more than thirty-five workers, many of whom were girls and young women, and on March 13, 1863, an explosion at a munitions factory on Brown’s Island in Richmond, Virginia, killed more than forty, all but three of whom were women.

The Washington Arsenal was located at the southern end of the District of Columbia, bounded on the east by the and on the west by the . The area in which the arsenal buildings were housed later became Fort Lesley J. McNair. During the Civil War, the arsenal manufactured all manner of munitions for the Union Army, includ- ing millions of rifle cartridges. Much of the workforce was composed of young women who worked twelve-hour shifts sitting at benches where they filled paper tubes with premea- sured amounts of gunpowder, a lead bullet, and then tied off the paper tube with string. The room in which the final procedure, tying the string, was performed was known as the Choking Room. Men supervised the work and young boys swept the rooms to remove any grains of gunpowder that fell to the floor.

Just before noon on June 17, 1864, as the thirty women in the Choking Room were nearing their lunch break, several pans of flares that were drying in the sun outside the building ignited, sending fiery balls in several directions. At least one flare passed through an open window into the Chok- ing Room and ignited an open case of cartridges. The resulting explosion and fire moved quickly throughout the room. As a result twenty-one of the women perished, most dying quickly with but a few lingering for a few days before succumbing to their injuries. The male superintendent of the ar- senal, who had placed the pans of flares to dry, was found to be careless and negligent. He was later removed as superintendent but remained employed as the chief pyrotechnician.

The monument to the memory of the Washington Arsenal Explosion stands above the mass grave of 15 to 21 women killed in the explosion uschs.

The majority of the women killed in the explosion were from poor Irish American families who worked at the arsenal to help support their families. Their deaths did not go unnoticed among the thousands of deaths in the war. Three days after the disaster, seventeen of the victims were buried in . The funeral procession included more than 150 carriages and stretched over a mile in length. President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War attended the ceremony. Fifteen of the victims were buried in a mass grave and two others were buried in family plots. The other four victims were buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Citizens of the nation’s capital donated $3,000 for the construction at Congressional Cemetery of a public monument to the victims of the arsenal explosion. Lot Flannery, a local sculptor, won the commis- sion for the monument and cre- ated a twenty-foot high marble shaft topped by a statue of Grief depicted as a female figure. The monument was dedicated exactly one year after the explosion.

A commemorative marker at Congressional Cemetery lists more names of the 21 victims. USCHS

A Guide to Civil War Washington, DC

When the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861, Washington, DC, was a small, essentially Southern city. The capital rapidly transformed as it prepared for invasion -- army camps sprung up in Foggy Bottom, the Navy Yard on the Anacostia was a beehive of activity, and even the Capitol was pressed into service as a barracks.
