Elements of the Main Application Window

This section explains the terminology and features of Mainframe Navigation’s main application window. Mainframe Navigation is a Windows framework, which is embedded in Entire Systems Management and can integrate various applications, such as the Output Management GUI Client.

When you start Mainframe Navigation, its main application window appears:

The main application window contains the object on the left and the content pane on the right. To modify the size of a pane, move the mouse pointer over the border separating the panes until the pointer changes, showing two arrows pointing in opposite directions . Then drag the border using the mouse until the panes have the desired size.

In addition, to the object workspace and the content pane, the main application window also contains the bar and tool bar, just above the object workspace, and the , just below it. From a list of objects in the object workspace or content pane you can also invoke a , containing a list of commands for a selected object.

The object workspace is on the left side of the main window and contains the tree view with its branches:

In the object workspace you can list existing objects, create new ones and perform various operations on them by invoking a context menu to display available commands.

Use the View options in the to toggle the object workspace on or off.

Expanding a Branch

To expand a branch in the object workspace and list the objects contained in it:

With the left mouse , click on the plus sign preceding the object.

In the following example, all datasets satisfying the criteria BRY.* are listed:

An object preceded by a minus sign has been fully expanded.

You can select an object and invoke a context menu to display a list of available commands.

Refresh Function - F5

You can refresh the view of a tree branch by selecting any object in the tree and pressing F5. Mainframe Navigation then displays the most current information from the server.

Rename Function - F2

You can rename an object in the tree or in a list by selecting the it and pressing F2. Change the name of the object by typing a new name. Press the Enter key. The new name appears in the tree or list.

Working within the Tree View Using the Keyboard Navigation

To navigate within the tree view using your keyboard

1. Pressing the up and down arrow keys move the selection up or down in the tree view or list view.

2. Pressing the left and right arrow keys expands or collapses an object in the tree view within the same hierarchy.

3. Pressing the Enter key corresponds to double-clicking on an object and invokes the default function for the currently selected object. It also collapses or expands an object, depending on its current state.

4. Pressing the Home or End key selects the first or the last object within the tree view. This feature works also in the list view of content pane.

Invoking Functions

To delete an object

If the Delete Function exists for the respective object:

1. Mark the object.

2. Use the Del key.

The object is deleted.

Displaying Available Commands via the Context Menu

A context menu enables you to perform the listed commands on the selected object.

To invoke a context menu and choose a command:

1. Select an object (either in the object workspace or in the content pane).

2. Click the right .

Or: Press SHIFT+F10.

The context menu appears (the example below shows the context menu for a dataset selected in the object workspace):

3. Choose the required command.

Commands that are greyed-out are not available for the selected object.

Content Pane

The content pane takes up the right side of the main application window. The appropriate list, window or dialog appears here, when you invoke a command for an object.

Invoking the List Command

To invoke the list command for an object:

1. Select an object in the object workspace and invoke the context menu.

2. Choose the List command.

Our example shows the context menu for a z/OS dataset with the List command selected:

When you have chosen the List command, a list of the subobjects contained in the selected object appears in the content pane. In our case, a list of PDS members contained in the selected z/OS dataset:

In turn, you can select a member in the new list and invoke a context menu containing available commands.

When you list objects in the content pane, they are displayed by default in alphabetical order according to object name in the details view (our example lists PDS members):

You can click on a column to toggle between displaying the information in ascending or descending alphabetical or chronological order. For example, if you click once on the column Modified, its information is displayed in ascending chronological order:

If you click again on the column Modified, its information is displayed in descending chronological order:

To display a list with large icons:

Invoke the context menu from anywhere within the list and choose View > Large Icons:

The name of each object in the list appears without details beneath a large of the object type:

Invoke the context menu from anywhere within the list and choose View > Small Icons:

Context Menu for all Views

In all views you can select an object and invoke a context menu to display a list of available commands.

Refresh Function - F5

You can refresh a list by pressing F5. Mainframe Navigation then displays the most current information from the server.

Using Selection Criteria when listing Objects - Filter Command

Selection Criteria retained

Before listing the objects contained in a folder, you might want to employ a filter with selection criteria. Only those objects which satisfy the criteria will be listed.

To list objects according to selection criteria:

1. Select an object (either in the object workspace or in the content pane).

2. Invoke the context menu and choose the Filter command.

A dialog similar to the following opens:

The above example shows the Filter Datasets dialog for z/OS. Possible criteria will vary with the object selected. For information on selection criteria for a specific object, see the section Using Selection Criteria to list ... for that object.

3. Enter selection criteria:

In the above example, we have entered selection criteria JWO.COMN.* for Dataset name.

4. Choose the OK button.

When you subsequently expand the folder or invoke the list command for it, only those objects are listed which satisfy the selection criteria:

The example above shows the result of expanding the Datasets folder in the object workspace. Only those datasets beginning with JWO.COMN are listed.

The result for the List command, looks like this:

Selection Criteria retained

The selection criteria last entered with the Filter command are used the next time you expand the corresponding folder or use the List command on it. These criteria are retained even after the session has ended and will be used the next time you start Mainframe Navigation.

Choosing a Command from the Menu Bar

The menu bar is at the top of the main application window on the left:

To choose a command from the menu bar:

1. Select the appropriate menu.

A drop-down menu of options appears.

2. From the drop-down menu, choose the desired command and object options.

The following menus are available:

Menu Use the commands in this menu to ... Object List, create, modify, display or perform other functions on the selected objects. Exit Mainframe Navigation. View Toggle the object workspace and status bar on and off. Options Select either German or English. Window Select the next, previous or desired content pane. Close all panes. Help Display the contents of the help system.

Tool Bar

The tool bar is just below the menu bar at the top of the screen:

To invoke a command from the tool bar:

Choose the appropriate command icon. If an icon is greyed-out, the command is not available for the selected object.

Status Bar

The status bar is on the bottom of the main application window, just below the object workspace:

Use the View options in the menu bar to toggle the status bar on or off.
