Learning Sustainability Eating Alabama Living a sustainable life—especially using sustainable farming practices and eating sustainable foods—has become a hot topic. WYCC PBS Chicago airs programs that feature stories of individuals leading sustainable lives and offering suggestions on what you can do too. Eating Alabama (Saturday, August 1 at 6 p.m.) is a story about why food matters. This documentary follows a young couple who wants to eat the way their grandparents did—locally and seasonally. They soon learn that the food system has changed drastically since their predecessors farmed the land. Jennie Garlington, host of EcoSense for Living (Sundays, August 2 and 9 at 3 p.m.), gives viewers tips on how to be more eco-aware and how to live an eco-sensible life. This month’s episodes focus on how to reduce your carbon footprint and how children and young adults can be more eco-friendly. Growing a Greener World, airing Sundays at 3:30 p.m., is an award-winning program that features organic gardening, green living, and farm-to-table food. A wide variety of topics are covered, including edible gardening, urban homesteading, hobby farming, seasonal cooking, and canning and preserving the harvest. Please see the listings for more information.

20 wycc.org ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with Eric Gorges Eric Gorges is a native of Detroit, Michigan. His upbringing in Motor City didn’t get him interested in cars, but another type of vehicle has become his passion: motorcycles. In the late 1990s, Gorges was hospitalized for anxiety. He then quit his IT job and started an apprenticeship with Ron Fournier, one of the best metal-shapers in the country, and worked with him on vintage cars and hot rods. After learning the skills he needed, Gorges branched out on his own and founded Voodoo Choppers. Gorges didn’t want to assemble bikes by buying parts from suppliers and following a premade design. Instead, he wanted to be able to create everything himself and produce customized, one-of-a- kind motorcycles for his clients. Gorges’ appreciation for handmade crafts comes from his father and grandfather, whom he describes as “how-to kind of guys.” His father never hired anyone to fix things around their house— he would always do the work himself—and Gorges’ grandfather was a cabinetmaker by trade. As the host of A Craftsman’s Legacy, Gorges interviews craftsmen from around the country and becomes their temporary apprentice, learning the art of book making, basket weaving, saddle making, and much more. Tune in Saturdays at 3 p.m. to discover that the lost world of craftsmanship isn’t so lost after all.

Summertime Is Teachers’ Time! Everyone knows that teachers love and need a summer break! For some teachers, it’s a wonderful time to travel, read books by the pool, and pursue special interests. Check out the Around the Globe: Italy resources from the PBS LearningMedia Global Learning and Diplomacy Collection.

Teachers are also invited to join Rick Steves as he explores Italy’s Verona, Padova, and Ravenna. Padova is famed for its venerable university, precious Giotto frescoes, and pilgrim-packed Basilica. Verona is a hit with aficionados of Roman ruins and Romeo and Juliet fans. And Ravenna, with its shimmering mosaics, was once the western bastion of the Byzantine Empire.

New Classroom Practices and Professional Development Summer’s also a great time to investigate new classroom practices and to do some professional development. You at the Zoo – Professional Development is a great resource where teachers can watch a five-video series to learn strategies and methods to integrate Scientific Inquiry into the classroom. These easy-to-follow videos will help you help students to make connections, think like a scientist, and learn independently in the classroom.
