1990: SBS Founded Founded in 1990 as a private terrestrial broadcaster, SBS initiated delivery of broadcasting services in 1991, breathing new life into the traditional public broadcasting system. In 1995, SBS began delivering nationwide service over a national network built in partnership with local private broadcasters.

1992: Unanswered Questions Aired Unanswered Questions By prompting awareness about long-ignored human rights issues and social problems and shedding light on various unsolved mysteries, SBS’ longest-running program Unanswered Questions has helped viewers stay better informed for over 20 years and remains popular to this day.

1995: Sandglass Aired Sandglass The drama miniseries Sandglass enjoyed unrivaled popularity across the country, even being compared to a homing signal because of how people hurried home after work to catch each new episode. Recording a peak rating of 64.5 percent, Sandglass marked SBS’ arrival as a leader in television drama production.

1999: Cable Channels Launched Beginning with a golf channel in 1999, a sports channel in 2000, and Drama Plus in 2002, SBS Medianet has taken its place as a premier cable TV program provider offering a balanced mix of sports, dramas, and entertainment.

2000: Historic Live Show Broadcast from North Korea On its tenth anniversary, SBS aired a special live broadcast of SBS 8 News from Pyongyang, the first such event in Korean broadcasting history. Since then, SBS has continued to promote inter-Korean cultural exchanges and reconciliation, broadcasting Unification between the two Koreas as well as the Cho Yong-pil Pyongyang Concert MEDIA HISTORY

2001: Korea’s First HD TV Broadcasts Launched SBS introduced HD TV broadcasts for the first time in the country, opening a new chapter in Korean broadcasting history and cementing its position as a brand pioneering the digital media era.

2006: Internet Radio Service Gorealra Kicked Off The country’s first online interactive radio platform, Gorealra enjoys a growing popularity thanks to a wide variety of features, including visual radio and replay functions, social media sharing, and spotlighted video and photo content.

2010: Running Man launched

Running Man A fresh take on the variety show format, Running Man has its members play games in various settings outside the traditional studio. With clever new themes and games introduced every episode, the show has attracted growing popularity not only in Korea but across Asia.

2014: SBS Programs Embraced in China The TV drama My Love From the Star was a smash hit in China My Love from the Star as well as in Korea. Hurry Up, Brother, the Chinese edition of Running Man coproduced by SBS, was also hugely successful, becoming of the highest-rated TV variety shows in China.

2015~: Sensational New Media Subusu News A young news brand, Subusu News, the first media in Korea to use the format of card news, is under a spotlight on portals and social networks. In addition, the social video brand, Video Mug, which moved away from the conventional news structure and communicates through fascinating imagery and intriguing storytelling, is also drawing attention.

2016: Successful UHD TV Transmission for the First Time in the World SBS completed the development of an automated UHD TV transmission system in November 2015 for UHD TV broadcasting. In January 2016, it successfully implemented ATSC 3.0-based UHD TV for the first time in the world. In December, we conducted the first live relay UHD broadcasting and UHD TV trial broadcasting in Korea.

th 2017: 20 Anniversary of Broadcasting Hope TV SBS Hope TV SBS This year we celebrated the completion of the project Building 100 Hope Schools in Africa, one of the major initiatives backed by Hope TV SBS, our flagship social contribution program. With a wide range of events such as the Hope School VR exhibition and KakaoTalk mobile donation program, SBS is also continuing its efforts to promote the culture of giving and sharing.

2018: The PyeongChang Winter Olympics Representative Relay Broadcasting During the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, relay broadcasting topped the list in age 20-49 and household viewer ratings, number of viewers, advertisement ratings, and popularity. It also topped the list in during the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. While You Are Asleep While You Are Asleep portrays a woman who can foresee future incidents and accidents and a man who fights to make them stop from happening. Actress plays Nam Hongju, who foresees the future and Actor Lee Jongsuk plays Jung Jaechan, who is a prosecutor fighting against the destined future. With original acting and directing, it has become the most popular program among the Wednesday and Thursday dramas.

Innocent Defendant is a drama about Park Jung- woo, a prosecutor who was accused of killing his daughter and wife and was sentenced to death. He wrote about his lost four months and turned it into a powerful journal showing his struggle and eventually shocking the world. Unanswered Questions SBS’s longest-running program, Unanswered Questions, which started in 1992, focuses on what viewers want to know about social issues. Above all, by raising public interest through broadcasting, we are actively participating in finding solutions to problems. On top of everything, the program plays a crucial role in contributing to solving unsolved cases by breaking them down into parts. SBS Special SBS Special, is a sensational documentary program that airs future-oriented documentaries which approach emotional issues in a rational and logical way. Dad’s War, a three-part series, highlighted the reality of difficult parenting. Eccentric documentaries such as My Starry Shameful Old Days and the first Korean squirrel fantasy drama were both fun and helpful for the audiences. Cultwo Show SBS Power FM’s flagship radio program, Cultwo Show, which has been at number one for 12 years, entertains listeners every afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. The merit of the program is that the listeners can feel a sense of interaction with the comedian and DJ Cultwo. They are very popular for their whimsical and witty speaking skills while they tell stories.

Lee Sook-young’s Love FM Lee Sook-young’s Love FM first aired in 1996, launched together with the Power FM station as Lee Sook-young’s Power FM. Sister’s Radio SBS Love FM Sister’s Radio comes from the hit podcast Song Eun-I and ’s Secret Secured. By taking the concept of the podcasts, Song Eun-I and Kim Sook, the two hosts, solicit stories from listeners and give a witty and blunt consultation. In the main segment of the show, Secret Security S, they make sure that the participants are completely anonymous by modifying their voices and that we are listening to actual phone calls, guest connections, and real-time voting. SBS D Forum SDF is a major knowledge-sharing project and signature corporate social responsibility initiative of SBS. SDF (Seoul Digital Forum) was first created in 2004, together with the Future Korea Report (FKR), as a means for SBS to give back to society in its capacity as a public broadcaster. Over the years, Bill gates Principal founder of Microsoft SDF and FKR have served as important nonprofit forums for considering, on the one hand, the technology-driven transformation of our world, and, on the other, issues of potential relevance to Korea’s mid- and long-term future. Yet with issues pertaining to technology and society becoming increasingly inextricable, SBS has recognized the need for a new approach attuned not only to the trends of our time but also to the needs of a broader range of viewers. In this context, we are pleased to open SDF chapter 2 with the launch of SBS D Forum, an all-new forum that both merges and builds on the rich traditions of SDF and FKR. The SBS D Forum (also will be called “SDF”) will transcend the limitations of the Seoul Digital Forum and its focus on technology by embracing a more multifaceted perspective on social challenges. The D of SBS D Forum stands, for instance, for not just Digital and Data but also for Diversity, Democracy, and Dream etc. Moreover, the SBS D Forum will involve not only the offline forum in November but also wide-ranging offline and online content produced year-round—lectures and discussions by leaders in various fields, and experiments and campaigns that the public can take part in—all of which will help us find solutions together to the challenges we face as a society. The offline forum will be developed into a platform for reviewing the projects that take place throughout the year and sharing relevant experience with the goal of gaining greater insight into the topics at hand.

Korea Artist Prize The SBS Foundation’s major social contribution project, Korea Artist Prize, is an award program jointly hosted by the Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art for the globalization and popularization of contemporary Korean art. The SBS Foundation has been involved in the development of talented artists and supporting their activities every year, while producing a documentary that illuminates contemporary art to increase public interest.

The House Concert The SBS Foundation has sponsored The House Concert since 2015 to promote classical performances and promote the fine arts. Hope TV SBS Korea that has been delivering dreams and hopes to viewers and children suffering from poverty and disease all over the world for the past 20 years. More than 4.6 million viewers raised more than 360 billion won in Hope TV SBS, and more than 100 stars visited more than 50 countries to participate in volunteer activities. The World’s Most Beautiful Travel is a weekly human solutions documentary broadcast by SBS that visits children’s centers and medical centers to help kids with rare diseases, tries to come up with solutions and supports them with experts in the field.

School is where children’s rights begin. Education saves children from poverty and labor and protects them from wars. SBS launched a project to Build 100 African Hope Schools from 2012 and th completed its 100 school in Zanzibar in 2017 so that children can be educated and become independent. In addition, we will provide SBS Hope Schools an environment for children to stand on their own by providing the Hope Ladder Project through which they can develop projects such as constructing advanced schools, educational support for technical careers, and development of autonomous villages

It supports medical care and living expenses for children in neglected places with poor medical conditions, including children with rare incurable diseases, immigrant workers, and children from multicultural families.

SBS is developing a project to provide dreams and hope for underprivileged children by improving underdeveloped children centers and establishing a new local children’s center in areas with no such centers. As Korea a media group, we have continuously raised issues regarding the low birth rate in various fields, including broadcasting programs, news reports, campaigns, and support for policy research, and have successfully raised public awareness.

The Water and Environmental Improvement Program started as a

Water is Life public pledge in 2001. It conducts various campaigns to prevent water pollution and maintain the condition of coastal areas and mudflats, and to resolve water shortages in island areas, thereby promoting a healthy environment for the ecosystem. Since 2012, it has been conducting a “Ditch Saving Campaign” with the Ministry of Environment and local governments to help bring life back to the abandoned and polluted ditches all around the country.

A new concept of crowdfunding combines news and television programs with donations. People can directly introduce a story of people in need, and viewers can directly support the people. SBS provides the online platform that enables people to participate in the campaign. In 2016, 1 billion won was raised in three days for a story about neurofibromatosis.
