20 wycc.org ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with Martin Yan Chef Martin Yan was born in Guangzhou, China, and developed a passion for food at a young age. His first culinary apprenticeship was at a Hong Kong restaurant when he was just 13 years old. He received further instruction at Hong Kong’s Overseas Institute of Cookery. Yan made his way to North America by immigrating to Calgary, Canada. He then earned his MS degree in Food Science from the University of , Davis. Yan’s big television break came when he started Yan Can Cook, a Chinese cooking show. His warmth and wit drew viewers in, creating a loyal following from around the globe. Since then, he has hosted over 2,000 cooking shows and written 26 cookbooks. Yan has taught at the California Culinary Institute, Johnson & Wales University (where he also has an honorary degree), the Chinese Cuisine Institute in Hong Kong, the Culinary Institute of America, and the University of San Francisco. He founded the Yan Can International Cooking School in 1985 and has two restaurants, Yan Can and SensAsian. LANGUAGE ARTS/SOCIAL STUDIES Program: The Fairytale Castles of King Ludwig II with Dan Cruickshank Focus: History, Creative Writing Grades: 6–12 Airing: Wednesday, September 2 at 7 p.m. Overview: King Ludwig II of Bavaria spent his life in pursuit of the ideal of beauty, and many believe his castles were the work of an architectural genius ahead of his time. This program explores the rich aesthetic of Ludwig II to discover if they hold the key to the eternal enigma of this intriguing royal. Program: Carpe Diem: A Fishy Tale Focus: Invasive Species Grades: 6–12 Airing: Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. Overview: Introduced to American fish ponds in the 1970s to clean up algae, the Asian carp eventually made its way into the Mississippi River system. Viewers go into the heart of the battle to curtail this ecologically devastating invasion. Free Additional Resources: Another fish wreaking havoc on its ecosystem is the Indo-Pacific lionfish, invading the Atlantic and Caribbean with catastrophic results. This non-native species has no local predators and is propagating at a rate that adversely impacts the coral reef habitats of the Eastern United States, Caribbean, and . Students may watch the “Invasion of the Alien Fish” video and compare and contrast the issues encountered. Other support materials, including discussion guides, are available at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
