TELEVISION BROADCASTERS’ ADOPTION OF DIGITAL MULTICAST AND ANCILLARY SERVICES: AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRIMARY CORE, SUPPORTING, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DRIVERS By TODD ANDREW HOLMES A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MASS COMMUNICATION UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2008 1 © 2008 Todd Andrew Holmes 2 To all who have inspired my intellectual curiosity and academic pursuits, and to all who have supported me in reaching this milestone 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank my chair, Dr. Ostroff, for the enormous amount of time and guidance he gave to me in helping me to complete this research study. His support and direction were absolutely critical in the successful completion of this paper. I also would like to thank the members of my committee, Dr. Chan-Olmsted and Dr. Brown, for their thoughts and ideas concerning my research topic. Second, I would like to thank the nine television executives who took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me and who very openly and willingly shared with me their thoughts on the research topic. Their help was absolutely vital to the completion of this study. Third, I would like to thank my parents who continued to keep me moving along on the thesis through their inquiries and encouragement. Their own academic achievements have continued to inspire me throughout this process. Lastly, special thanks go to all my friends, the Gator Guzzlers and many others, who heard me talk about this thesis for months and with whom I had to skip out on a lot of activities.

  • News Headline Tone in International Coverage of North Korea's September 2017 Nuclear Test
Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications- Volume 5, Issue 1 – Pages 1-16 A Rogue Nation: News Headline Tone in International Coverage of North Korea’s September 2017 Nuclear Test By Butler Cain & Kristina Drumheller† On September 3, 2017, North Korea underwent its sixth nuclear test despite expectations of denuclearization. News headlines from six international news sources were analyzed for journalistic tone related to the nuclear test. As with previous research on earlier tests, headlines were primarily neutral or negative regardless of the news source. Given that 60% of people only read the headlines, and a similar number share news stories on social media based on headline, examining journalistic tone in headlines during international crises is worthwhile. Keywords: Korea, nuclear, headline, tone, journalism. Introduction News coverage of North Korea’s continued thwarting of denuclearization efforts has often ranged from neutral reporting of events to negative condemnation with little to no positive commentary (Cain & Drumheller, 2014). North Korea’s sixth nuclear test on September 3, 2017, brought variations in headlines from news organizations around the world. News headlines might be all that is read of a news story as headlines are highlighted in email briefs and social media shares. This study analyzes the news headlines from six international broadcasters on the day of the detonation and examines them for journalistic tone to assess agenda setting trends set by the limited but salient information a headline provides. The relationship the United States has with North Korea has long been one of proximity through maintaining a base in South Korea and policy demand in the form of CVID (complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization; Anderson, 2017).

It‘s also a safe place where staff feel good about helping their students to learn and prepare for a bright future. The center is run by Native Hawaiian U‘ilani Corr-Yorkman. U‘ilani wasn‘t always a business owner. She actually taught at DOE for 8 years. A Mālama Loan from OHA helped make her dream of owning her own preschool a reality. The low-interest loan allowed U‘ilani to buy fencing for the property, playground equipment, furniture, books…everything needed to open the doors of her business. U‘ilani and her staff serve the community in ‘Ele‘ele, Kaua‘i, and have become so popular that they have a waiting list. OHA is proud to support Native Hawaiian entrepreneurs in the pursuit of their business dreams. OHA‘s staff provide Native Hawaiian borrowers with personalized support and provide technical assistance to encourage the growth of Native Hawaiian businesses. Experience the OHA Loans difference.
