President’s Welcome

Randy Forsman Director, KCRA 3 President NATAS SF/NorCal 2020-2022 National Trustee 2019-2023 Governors’ Service Medallion 2018

On behalf of the Board of Governors and me, I would like to welcome you to the 50th Northern California Area Emmy® Awards. While I had hoped we could all be together in person for a momentous occasion such as is our 50th, the timing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic just wasn’t right. As a matter of safety, our board of governors made the difficult but responsible decision to hold our gala virtually once again. While you may be watching us from the comfort of your home, your accomplishments are no less significant. We encourage everyone to share their celebratory moments on social media using the hashtag #EmmySF50.

I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all our nominees and recipients tonight. The standard of excellence to earn either a nomination or receive an Emmy® statuette by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) is an honor to celebrate. Our local chapter is one of 19 chapters across the country and our members are made up of media professionals in not only San Francisco and Sacramento, but Eureka and Chico/Redding to the north, Reno, Fresno, Salinas/Monterey on the central coast, Hawaii, and even Guam.

Tonight would not be possible without the hard work of Emmy® Gala Chair Joyce Mitchell, Awards Chair Wayne Freedman, Gala Editor Steve Shlisky, Toby Momtaz and Ken Day with their help our on-location production, Patty Zubov with her help with sponsorships, Larena Baldazo for her help with social media, our Board of Governors for their consistent support and guidance. I would also like to thank Breathless Wines for providing a discount for our members to toast and celebrate with their sparkling wines as well as our sponsor Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy LLP.

As I close out the first year of my presidency, I am inspired to see the resiliency of members of our chapter who continue to produce excellent, award-winning work. My thanks go out to Past-President Steve Shlisky for having the confidence in me to nominate me for this role and for his continued mentorship and support as I grow with our chapter.

Congratulations once again to all our nominees and recipients tonight. While you will not be handed an award in person we hope that you will be able to share your celebration with your family and friends. Next year we hope you will join us to celebrate face-to-face once again at our 51st Northern California Area Emmy® Awards scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Hilton San Francisco Union Square.

Producer’s Welcome

Joyce Mitchell Executive Producer, 4U Productions Vice President, Sacramento 2019-2022 National Trustee 2020-2022 Governors’ Award 2017 Governors’ Service Medallion 2015 Silver Circle, Class of 2010

With an abundance of heart and soul, the 50th Annual Golden Gala Emmy® Awards Committee teamed up to provide you with the very best interactive viewing experience possible. We’ve represented markets throughout our region, documented history as we celebrate this monumental Golden Emmy® Anniversary while also saluting TV icons with the Governors’ Award and two Governors’ Citations.

I’ve produced dozens upon dozens of documentaries for television, produced Gubernatorial Debates, Town Halls, and thousands of Newscasts. But never before have I had the honor of undertaking a project of this magnitude – of saluting the hundreds of people nominated for submitting their very best work for the Emmy® Awards contest. And believe me, it’s a tough contest.

The Awards Committee, under the guidance of Chair Wayne Freedman assures that. The Emmy® is held to very high standards in our chapter and earned for excellence. Please know that if you receive a statue tonight, you are among an elite group of people who’ve worked hard to assure that the very best of the best is being recognized.

The 2021 50th Golden Gala is virtual again this year as we rebound from COVID-19. First and foremost, we want to protect the health and well-being of our members, their families and friends. And yet, we’ve been innovative and managed to incorporate interactive social media with a pre-produced webstream that tells the whole story.

Recipients are announced from markets throughout region and the online acceptance speeches and Zoom rooms may, in some cases, steal the show. We’ve even provided you a bottle of bubbly at a discounted price to celebrate with your peers and family. Thank you To Breathless Sparkling Wines.

Next year, I look forward to seeing you all in person at the Emmy® Awards Gala in San Francisco. Meanwhile, this year, sit back in the comfort of your home or party place, and enjoy. And congratulations to all of the nominees.

If you receive an Emmy® tonight, remember, you’ve been honored and earned a golden statuette – a lady with wings that represent the arts. She’s holding an atom – representing science. Compelling storytelling coupled with technological advancements have made this award possible. Welcome to the 50th Annual Golden Gala Northern California Area Emmy® Awards.

Awards Chair Welcome

Wayne Freedman Reporter KGO ABC 7 Trustee 2019-2023 NATAS Awards Chair Silver Circle Class of 2001 Governors’ Citation 2013 Governors’ Award 2021

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Emmy® Awards and Emmy® Gala Committees, welcome to our 50th Annual Northern California Area Emmy® Awards. Tonight, we honor excellence in a region encompassing Northern California, Reno, the Hawaiian Islands, and Guam.

For a second consecutive year, we must gather virtually. In 2020, the English contest saw 765 submissions and 195 nominations in 68 categories. The Spanish contest received 147 entries and 47 nominations in 34 categories. Qualified judges in seven separate NATAS chapter judged the work. This evening, we celebrate 488 nominees in both contests. You are the elite. Juries of your peers across the country scored your work and deemed it worthy. The nomination is an award in its own right. That golden statuette reflects a higher level of it. You have multiple options for viewing and interacting tonight. If you have a smart television with the YouTube application, watch on our channel at Emmy SF TV. For commenting and live chat, please join us on Facebook @EmmySFTV. Nominees have VIP access to our watch party on Zoom. Check your emails for a link to that. On our website, EmmySF.TV, watch both the show and the live Zoom with a rundown so you will know exactly when to expect your category. If you post on social media, please use #EmmySF50. Thank you to the Awards Committee for the long hours spent certifying submissions. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who put so much work into making this event happen. We recorded tonight’s program in advance. For several nights, members of our Gala Committee traveled to multiple locations where we produced our segments. Everyone involved signed a confidentiality agreement. Thank you, especially, to Sacramento Vice President Joyce Mitchell and Governor Toby Momtaz, for their smooth coordination in producing this program. Thanks, also, to Ken Day for shooting the video. Finally, we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to our former president and Governors’ Citation recipient Steve Shlisky, for his post-production work in putting it together. We hope to see you next year in person. Congratulation to all the Emmy® Nominees. Good luck!

2020-2021 Awards Judging Procedures

The San Francisco/Northern California Chapter annually honors outstanding individual, news and program achievements in Northern California, Hawaii and Reno. The purpose of conferring the coveted Emmy® statuette is to provide incentive for continuing outstanding individual and production achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards program is also a means of focusing public attention upon the multi- talented individuals who comprise this business and to honor them. There can be one award, more than one award or no award presented in each category. This was another great year with 912 entries (765 English and 147 Spanish) submitted in 68 English and 34 Spanish categories from the calendar year 2020, for Emmy® award consideration. All entries were submitted and uploaded through Emmy® Express and then judged online by the more then one of the following NATAS chapters: /New England, /Midwest; Lonestar (); Northwest (Seattle); Pacific Southwest (); Rocky Mountain/Pacific Southwest; and Sun Coast (). At least seven peers viewed and scored each entry. English and Spanish entries are judged separately. The online programs were scored for content, creativity, and execution (1 to 10 points), for a possible total of 30 points. Craft categories are judged on creativity and execution only, for a possible 20 points. After scoring all the entries in the category, the judge certified his or her scores and submitted the ballot directly to our accountant for processing. A tabulated sheet representing each category - with separate entries for English and Spanish but not identified - was presented to the Awards Committee. The committee determined a cutoff in each category and entries above that score were considered nominees. The committee then selected the Emmy® recipients by highest scores. The Awards Committee members made these selections without knowing which entries or categories were being considered. The nominations were announced May 5, 2021 on the chapter’s website. 195 English and 47 Spanish entries were nominated with 831 certificates being handed out to 488 individuals. Tonight, we will see the top scores of Emmy® award excellence.

The Governors’ Citation

James Stimson

Assistant News Director, KCRA 3 Silver Circle Class of 2008

In an era where the word “tenure” has little meaning, Jim Stimson has defined it while making himself a career at KCRA. Starting as an intern at KCRA radio in 1974, he gained permanent employment a year later. In 1978, he moved over to KCRA-TV and is still there. Over the years, Jim has had a hand in just about every aspect of KCRA’s news coverage – as a Writer, Assignment Editor, Office Manager, Field Producer, Weekend Reporter, Line Producer, Senior Producer, Executive Producer and Assistant News Director. Along the way, Jim has received multiple Emmy® awards, including two for his work in set design. He oversaw the station’s award-winning coverage of the 1997 floods and its statewide town hall broadcast with President Bill Clinton. He has produced special coverage of autism, AIDS, breast cancer, debates, sporting events, elections, conventions, and the U.S. space program. Jim credits much of his success to the talent and hard work of the people he has had the privilege to work with and learn from over the years. Of all the things he has done at KCRA, Jim says he remains proudest of the station’s day to day news coverage.

“Jim’s commitment to integrity-first journalism is foundational to the success of KCRA 3 News and the culture of our ,” said KCRA 3/My58 President and General Manager Ariel Roblin.

“Jim believes the best investment you can make is in people and he has championed the careers of countless journalists throughout his decades of service,” said KCRA 3 News Director Derek Schnell. “For all of us who work with Jim, his commitment and dedication to KCRA 3 and covering stories that make an impact in our community are remarkable.”

“I will simply say that I have had the good fortune to work with some very talented people all of these years,” said KCRA Assistant News Director and Governors’ Citation Honoree Jim Stimson. “And, I have benefited greatly from station owners who have been, and who continue to be, committed to the highest standards of television, journalism and service to the communities we cover. Without that I would not be where I am today.”
