Cablefax Dailytm Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No
www.cablefaxdaily.com, Published by Access Intelligence, LLC, Tel: 301-354-2101 Cablefax DailyTM Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No. 006 Quick Bites: Quibi Not ‘Shrinking TV’ For Mobile Viewing In just over a year, short-form content streamer Quibi has been able to raise $1bln in funding while receiving the back- ing of major Hollywood studios, but are consumers ready to embrace the app? CEO Meg Whitman and founder Jeffrey Katzenberg used the company’s CES keynote Wednesday to dispel any consumer skepticism regarding Quibi, calling it the world’s first mobile-only premium entertainment platform. “Mobile phones are the most widely-distributed, democra- tized entertainment platform the world has ever seen,” Katzenberg said. The idea behind the platform is to deliver movie- quality experiences in quick bites (known as Quibis) for Millennial and Gen Z audiences that take advantage of all of the capabilities modern smartphones offer. To do so, Quibi had to tackle the usual challenges that come with mobile viewing, including the inability to watch content in both portrait and landscape modes. “It means creating a technology platform optimized for people on the go and giving them a great entertainment experience in those in-between moments,” Whit- man said. “We’re not shrinking TV onto phones. We’re creating something new.” Chief product officer Tom Conrad took to the stage to unveil Turnstyle, a new way to watch that allows viewers to move between a full-screen landscape mode and a full-screen portrait mode experience at any time. Conrad illustrated Turnstyle by showing the short film “Nest.” When the phone was held in portrait mode, viewers were able to see an intruder trying to break into a woman’s house through her Google Nest doorbell camera. -

HUMAN TRAFFICKING Findings • in Its 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report, the U.S
HUMAN TRAFFICKING Findings • In its 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report, the U.S. State De- partment listed China as Tier III, which is a designation for governments who ‘‘do not fully meet the minimum standards [under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act] and are not making significant efforts to do so.’’ • Chinese anti-trafficking law remains inconsistent with inter- national standards in the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (Palermo Protocol), to which China is a State Party. Whereas the Palermo Protocol encompasses the exploitation of any individual, Chinese law addresses the selling of women and children, making it difficult to assess the scale of human trafficking in China as defined by international standards. • Women and girls from countries including Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, North Korea, Paki- stan, and Vietnam were trafficked into China for forced mar- riage and sexual exploitation. The demand for such trafficking is due in part to the sex ratio imbalance in China, a result of decades of government-imposed birth limits and a traditional preference for sons, as well as a lack of economic opportunity in countries of origin. • Chinese nationals were trafficked from China to other parts of the world, including the United States. Chinese sex workers were found working in illicit massage parlors across the United States. Because of their coercive nature, some of these cases may constitute human trafficking. • Continued restrictions on movement imposed by the hukou system contributed to the risks that internal migrant workers face in human trafficking. • The Chinese government continued to subject individuals to forced labor during pretrial detention and in administrative de- tention. -

Through pioneering programs and opportunities for women journalists, the IWMF effects change in newsrooms. We empower women journalists with the training, support and network they need to become leaders in the news industry, and we promote freedom of the press by recognizing brave reporters who speak out on global issues. Journalists from Ethiopia, Gaza and Azerbaijan were honored in 2012 with Courage in Journalism Awards. “I knew that I would pay the price for my courage and I was ready to accept that price,” 2012 Courage Award winner Reeyot Alemu told the IWMF. A columnist for the independent Ethiopian newspaper Feteh, Alemu received a prison sentence after being wrongfully convicted of terrorism charges related to her reporting. IWMF initiatives help women journalists thrive in their profession across the world. For example, the IWMF boosts women’s participation as entrepreneurs in the digital news media with a grant program that provides selected women journalists the opportunity to launch innovative digital media startups. Since 2011, six $20,000 grants have been awarded through the Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital News Frontier program. -

Achieving "The Franchise": the Comcast-Nbc Universal Merger and the New Media Marketplace
ACHIEVING "THE FRANCHISE": THE COMCAST-NBC UNIVERSAL MERGER AND THE NEW MEDIA MARKETPLACE Thomas Curtint I. INTRODUCTION In 1997, then-Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC" or "Commission") Reed Hundt delivered a speech to the leaders of the cable industry in which he described the future of cable television in terms of what he called "the Franchise."' According to Hundt, this model "consists of the core package of the most popular TV channels and the most popular way to deliver them." Hundt acknowledged that the cable industry "has made huge inroads on the delivery side," and classified broadcast television as "the other side of the Franchise." 2 The Chairman further forecasted that "the core pro- gramming package may or may not be possessed by local broadcasters in the future."' Nearly thirteen years after Chairman Hundt foretold an all-in-one entertain- ment content and delivery service, the Comcast Corporation ("Comcast") is on its way to realizing this vision of "the Franchise," as the media delivery giant undertakes efforts to merge with NBC Universal.' If successful, the merger would give the nation's largest cable corporation control over NBC Univer- t J.D. Candidate, May 2011. Tom would like to thank his parents, Thomas and Donna Curtin, his brother Frank and his extended family for always encouraging the writing proc- ess. He would also like to thank his friends for their constant support, and the Editors and Associates of COMMLAW CONSPECTUS Volumes 18 and 19 for their valued input and advice.
