NOMINEES FOR THE 32 nd ANNUAL NEWS & DOCUMENTARY EMMY ® AWARDS ANNOUNCED BY THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES Winners to be announced on September 26th at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center Larry King to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award New York, N.Y. – July 18, 2011 (revised 8.24.11) – Nominations for the 32nd Annual News and Documentary Emmy ® Awards were announced today by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The News & Documentary Emmy® Awards will be presented on Monday, September 26 at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. The event will be attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Emmy ® Awards will be presented in 42 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview, and Best Documentary, among others. This year’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to broadcasting legend and cable news icon Larry King. “Larry King is one of the most notable figures in the history of cable news, and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is delighted to present him with this year’s lifetime achievement award,” said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS. “Over the course of his career Larry King has interviewed an enormous number of public figures on a remarkable range of topics. In his 25 years at CNN he helped build an audience for cable news and hosted more than a few history making broadcasts.     THE MISREPRESENTED ROAD TO MADAME PRESIDENT: MEDIA COVERAGE OF FEMALE CANDIDATES FOR NATIONAL OFFICE by Jessica Pinckney A thesis submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Government Baltimore, Maryland May, 2015 © 2015 Jessica Pinckney All Rights Reserved Abstract While women represent over fifty percent of the U.S. population, it is blatantly clear that they are not as equally represented in leadership positions in the government and in private institutions. Despite their representation throughout the nation, women only make up twenty percent of the House and Senate. That is far from a representative number and something that really hurts our society as a whole. While these inequalities exist, they are perpetuated by the world in which we live, where the media plays a heavy role in molding peoples’ opinions, both consciously and subconsciously. The way in which the media presents news about women is not always representative of the women themselves and influences public opinion a great deal, which can also affect women’s ability to rise to the top, thereby breaking the ultimate glass ceilings. This research looks at a number of cases in which female politicians ran for and/or were elected to political positions at the national level (President, Vice President, and Congress) and seeks to look at the progress, or lack thereof, in media’s portrayal of female candidates running for office. The overarching goal of the research is to simply show examples of biased and unbiased coverage and address the negative or positive ways in which that coverage influences the candidate.

There are gaming apps, there are weather apps, but there isn’t anything that puts the two together. So you get a forecast, you get information you need to know, but there’s a little game involved. Of course I do early morning TV, both Wake Up with Al and the Todayshow, and there was a little episode last year when I overslept for the first time. There’s a game that involves these cute little weather characters that you have to use to wake me up and help me get to the studio. So it’s both a game and a weather app.” And it incorporates your love of animation. “Yeah, I have loved animation ever since I was a little kid. I wanted to be an animator. What’s been great is that I’ve been able to use some of that in designing these apps and working with the programmers to get the animation right. It’s kind of addictive’ it’s fun. I think each of these little weather icons, these Rokies, whether it’s a cloud or a sun or a windstorm, all have their own little personality.” What were some of your favorite cartoons as a kid? “The classics, Tom and Jerry, The Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, all the classic Disney feature animations, and then even as I got older, I still loved animation, The Animaniacs, and you move forward into Batman and Batman Beyond.

Through pioneering programs and opportunities for women journalists, the IWMF effects change in newsrooms. We empower women journalists with the training, support and network they need to become leaders in the news industry, and we promote freedom of the press by recognizing brave reporters who speak out on global issues. Journalists from Ethiopia, Gaza and Azerbaijan were honored in 2012 with Courage in Journalism Awards. “I knew that I would pay the price for my courage and I was ready to accept that price,” 2012 Courage Award winner Reeyot Alemu told the IWMF. A columnist for the independent Ethiopian newspaper Feteh, Alemu received a prison sentence after being wrongfully convicted of terrorism charges related to her reporting. IWMF initiatives help women journalists thrive in their profession across the world. For example, the IWMF boosts women’s participation as entrepreneurs in the digital news media with a grant program that provides selected women journalists the opportunity to launch innovative digital media startups. Since 2011, six $20,000 grants have been awarded through the Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital News Frontier program.
