20 wycc.org ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with John Singleton John Daniel Singleton was born on January 6, 1968, in Los Angeles, California. The neighborhood where he grew up in south-central L.A. experienced a lot of violence, which would go on to influence Singleton’s work. Singleton attended the University of Southern California to study screenwriting. He won a number of awards and signed a contract with the Creative Artists Agency before he even graduated. Singleton’s first film, Boyz n the Hood, told the story of three childhood friends who faced poverty and gang violence. This coming-of-age story was well-received by critics and moviegoers alike. Singleton was nominated for two Academy Awards with this film, for best screenplay and best director. He was the first African American to be nominated for best director. Singleton’s subsequent films produced in the 1990s, including Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, and Rosewood, did not achieve the same level of fame as his first, but he has worked with many A-list celebrities, such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Mark Wahlberg. He also worked on the action film 2 Fast 2 Furious, part of the popular The Fast and the Furious franchise. Viewers can learn more about Singleton’s creative inspirations during his episode of On Story, airing Sunday, June 5 at 6 p.m., with an encore presentation on Thursday, June 23 at 9 p.m. Image available through the Creative Commons
