We have already published by now Part A and B of the District Census Handbooks for all the districts of the State. The administrative statistics and full count tables have also boon published separately in Part C of the above volumes.

But yet, the persistent demand for additional basic census data for the State as a whole has remained unfulfilled. At the time when planning has reverted to the grass roots, it is but natural that there should be demand for data of every kind at the district and even taluka level. It is in order to meet with this growing demand that we have compiled the present booklet.

Pending publication of the General Report, and Eome other table volumes, it would provide enough material to the planners to initiate their schemes and develop them. It will help others to start thinking on lines which are clearly seen on the horizon.

As the very name indicates, it is really meant to serve as a Pocket Book. It contains tables with abEOlutefigures though per. oentages have been worked out at several places. It gives data on growth of population of the State over the decades, and percentage variation of the population. It contains revealing figures on progress of literacy. Figures about proportion of urban and rural population and Scheduled Caste and Tribe population and the literacy rate among the latter upto taluka level would prove to be very interesting. It will help to pinpoint the regional imbalance in planning and help determine areas where emphasis is most needed. The growth centres oould be easily located with the help of this data and their development potential fully exploi~d. The age composition of the population is being released for the first time. Particulars about

1 workers to the total population and their distribution among various industrial categories will be of immenEIl help in any scientific study that is undertaken.

The data on housing is also being released here, though it is the subject ma.tter of a separate report.

S~m~ All India Tables have been given to facilitate comparison with other States on ,arious counts.

This Directorate is implementing the Sample Registration System in selected blocks of the State. As Census figures beoome available every ten years only, the sy~tEm was start€d with the idea of getting a !lorrect picture of the aJ;nuol birth and death rates. As our civil registration was fOUI",d to be very defioient in giving definite indicators it was hopEd thllt this System will help us in getting correct projections. Part II of Pooket Book contains data on vital statistics deriv£d from Sample Registration System.

Part I of the booklet is divided in three sections (I) State Tables, (2) District Tables and (3) All India Tables.

It is hoped that this small booklet will meet the requirement of the sch')la.rs, administrators, pla.nners and demographers and all those who are interested in the subject.

I am grateful to the State Government for ha.ving agreed to bring out this publication on the same lin.s as the Distl'ict Census Handbook Volumes.

My sincere thanks are due to Shri R. Parthasarathy, Joint Seoretary to , G. A. D. (Planning) due to Whose efforts this publication has been possible. My thanks

2 are also duo to Shri P. R Buch, Director, Bureau of EcollCwics ann Statistics for ha, iI'!! gc'r:e through the tnblu.

I am thankful to the Manager, GoverUIDwt Cfntral Press, Ganrlhinagar, for the expeditious printing.
