McDONALD WIN 2020 HOUSE CUP!

On our final day for Term 3 we came together to celebrate a great tradition at Gleeson College; Gleeson Day. The day allows us the opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our patron Archbishop James Gleeson; he was a great leader in the Archdiocese of Adelaide, he had a passion for education and vision that included the establishment of Caritas. Students gathered in the DRMC to begin the day with the leadership induction assembly. Drawing on the qualities of our patron, Archbishop James Gleeson, we acknowledged his work and passion for student voice and we welcomed our current group of student leaders and acknowledge the work carried out by the previous group of leaders. We are very fortunate to a number of students willing to support the College with these positions and I thank the previous leaders for their work and look forward to the initiatives and energy our new students will bring to their position. Following the Student leadership induction, I had the privilege to present the House cup for the final time. This times always creates a sense of house spirit and anticipation for the students and staff. The House Cup is calculated through the allocation of points from the many activities and opportunities the students have access to here at Gleeson College. From Carnival results, merit awards, fundraising, grade point averages, extra-curricular activity participation and awards received. Every student has an opportunity to contribute positively to their house success in the cup. In 2020, we wrestled the stronghold of the cup from Fyfe to award the House Cup to McDonald House. ...Continued on page 6

Tom Dawson, Languages & Cultural Programs Leader GLEESON DAY LITURGY > Let Us Always Be of ‘One Heart’

At the end of Term 3, we came together to celebrate a Liturgy in memory of our patron, Archbishop James Gleeson. His favourite verse from Micah 6:8 was woven throughout and brought to life in the words and prayers which were spoken. Our patron was authentic and a servant to all. He was also a strong leader who coupled with drive and passion, brought his vision to reality. Gleeson College not only remembers him fondly but it is a testament to his character and beliefs that all students know and can articulate what he stood for. Students read and reflected on Archbishop’s letter to the school which he wrote when it first opened, over 30 years ago. Through knowledge and love, collaboration and passion, Gleeson College has emerged and grown from strength to strength. What pride he would have in his vision becoming a reality. Pride also in the fact that those values he spoke about and displayed, are still very strong today and permeate every part of the College community in how we learn, think and act. “I leave with you this hope of mine: that Gleeson College will always be of ‘One Heart’ in every aspect of its life and mission”. It was wonderful to gather as a faith- filled community and we were enriched by those students and staff who helped throughout the liturgy to create a spiritual and sacred space. The music, the readings and prayers linked beautifully into our celebration. We were delighted to have Monsignor John Swann be with us and he spoke beautifully and succinctly in his homily. The homily linked to the Gospel which retold the story of The Good May we continue to hold his vision and Samaritan. A simple message of how his values close to our hearts. Late in Term 3, Fyfe House held ‘Crazy Hats for Headspace Day’, which was our awareness day to support Headspace and positive mental health and wellbeing in our community. This event tied in nicely with the learning that students had been involved with during PDP around ‘R U OK Day’ and allowed the students to keep promoting and engaging with the theme of mental health and wellbeing. As part of this event, students were encouraged to wear a Crazy Hat on the day in which prizes were awarded for the craziest hat. During recess and lunch there were activities for students to get involved in, including making stress balls, dance competitions and large games in the courtyard. During the whole of Week 10 students could be involved in activities during Care Group to help promote mindfulness and mental health. It was great to see the community getting behind this cause, which was a Fyfe student-driven initiative, to promote positive wellbeing in our community. Thank you to all that were involved.

Queries: [email protected] ONE+ TITRATION COMPETITION 2020

On Monday 19 October, four Year 11 Gleeson Chemistry students competed in the very first Titration Competition in the One+ Chemistry laboratories, going up against students from Pedare Christian College and Golden Grove High School. Titration is a technique used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution, using specific glassware, and using chemistry equations and formulas to determine the strength of a solution. After undergoing several repeated titrations, the students needed to use their precision skills to be as close as they could to the pre-determined concentration. Congratulations to Ky Cooper (11 MSGAG), pictured below, for having the third most accurate value for the concentration of sodium hydroxide. All students who were placed had an error within 2%, which is an excellent result. It was great to see all the students showcase their skills in performing titrations which they have developed through the year.

Sue Smith, Chemistry Teacher YEAR 10 VISUAL ART > Van Gogh Oil Pastel Reproductions

In Year 10 Visual Art, one of our assessments this semester involved learning how to critically analyse a piece of artwork produced by a chosen Impressionist artist. Impressionism developed in France in the 19th century and is based on the practice of painting outdoors and spontaneously ‘on the spot’ rather than in a studio from sketches. Main impressionist subjects were landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Part two, consisted of reproducing a Van Gogh painting using the medium oil pastels. The results were exceptional!

Evelina Condo, Visual Art Key Teacher YEAR 11 VISUAL ART > Portraiture + Learning About Iconic Frida Kahlo

As part of the Year 11 Visual Arts course, students have studied Portraiture and learning about the iconic female artist Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self- portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artefacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country’s popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art Above: An iconic Frida Kahlo self portrait style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. The students took what they had learnt from Frida Kahlo and the importance of symbolism and created a self-portrait displaying an event or memory in their own painting. As you can see, the results were of a high standard and encouraging not only to myself, but for the students as well.

Rachel Staffin, Sports Development Coordinator Callan Artz Wil Carpenter GLEESON OPEN BOYS KO CROWNED #1 IN 2020!

Congratulations to the Gleeson Open Boys KO Basketball Team who managed to take home the 2020 State Championship Knockout Title in Pool C at Springbank Stadium last week! With a star-studded line-up and dynamic bench, the boys were able to make it through two preliminary rounds and the final round robin tournament undefeated. Led by Seniors Geoff Corbett, Nic Logan and an all-time defensive cast in Riley Aistrope and the strawberry blonde duo: James Taylor and Ky Cooper, our starting five was a squad to be feared. A late entrance and no time for a warm-up did not faze our boys, who were able to blow out Kapunda 46-10 in the first tournament game. The following games against Charles Campbell and Naracoorte proved to be a bit more challenging, however the boys made the necessary adjustments and won both games comfortably. Throughout the day, our Gleeson boys put on an absolute performance with high-flying dunks from Nic, clutch 3’s from sharpshooter James, relentless defence from Riley and Ky, unstoppable post moves by Geoff and ballet-esque footwork from 6th man of the year Aidan ‘Twinkle Toes’ Thatcher! Fuelled by an electric bench consisting of Aidan, Marcus Petts and Mitchell Wood, our boys played with fantastic intensity and tenacity for each and every game. The State Championship Title came down to our very last game against the also undefeated Seaton High School. However, their squad was still no match for our boys who won the game convincingly. Filled with spectacular highlights including a self alley-oop dunk by Nic, unbelievable point guard moves by 6ft7 Geoff and a basket from each of our players, the boys truly played ‘with one heart’. Congratulations again to all the boys, especially our Year 12s, on this amazing achievement and fingers crossed for next year - hopefully the current Year 11s can lead the way to another State Title in 2021.

Nicholas King, Open Boys KO Basketball Coach GLEESON OPEN BOYS KO BALLERS CROWNED #1 IN 2020! GLEESON OPEN BOYS KO BALLERS CROWNED #1 IN 2020! OPEN BOYS KO CRICKET TEAM FINISH STATE RUNNERS UP!

Congratulations to our Open Boys KO Cricket Team who finished Runners Up in the State Final late in Term 3. The boys, coached by Mr Shattock and Mr Hewson, went up against Cornerstone College on a very windy day at Park 17. We bowled first with Hayden Cesaro our best claiming 3/18, and Cornerstone setting a healthy target of 7/143. Angus Braendler and Kane Halfpenny opened the batting for Gleeson and notched respectable scores of 20 and 26, while Matthew Leray did exceptionally well in the middle order to score 20 before being run out. It came down to but unfortunately we were bowled out for 142 in the 35th over, falling just short of the win, but still gallant in defeat. Well done to all the boys on their efforts in 2020. OPEN BOYS KO CRICKET TEAM FINISH STATE RUNNERS UP! YEAR 8&9 BOYS + GIRLS KNOCKOUT TENNIS > ROUND 1

One of the most competitive Knockout tournaments of the year happens in early Term 4. Gleeson’s elite Middle School tennis players take on the State’s best in elimination rounds of team tennis! Our first round was the local derby where we faced our sister schools and close rivals in Pedare and Golden Grove. The weather looked menacing early with sprinkled showers all morning. Our boys played first and our doubles pairings of Conway and Lachlan, and Liam and Tom, fought hard against very difficult opposition, however went down in both matches. The singles was more of the same, with the exception of Tom who managed to grind out a great win to make sure we didn’t get swept to nil. This loss woke the boys up as they went on to perform well and sweep Pedare boys 6-0. Unfortunately, Golden Grove also beat Pedare, meaning we were eliminated with a win and a loss. Golden Grove didn’t manage to field a Girls team, meaning our match against Pedare would determine who went on to face reigning State Champions Adelaide High School and Marryatville in the next round. Our squad, which had been strengthened by the new inclusion of superstar Sasha, strengthened our already high-quality team with ‘veterans’ Chloe, Brooke and Mercedes (all Year 9) back for their last Middle School KO Competition. Both doubles pairings started strong with wins. Singles were hard-fought games, with Chloe and Brooke winning in long grueling matches. Mercedes had a much easier time in her singles victory and Sasha suffered a hard loss against a Pedare player who was also a club teammate. With a match score card of 5-1, our Gleeson girls are through to the next round and we wish the all the best as they head to Marryatville HS next week, where we will face our nemesis from last year Adelaide High! Thanks to all involved. **If this captures your imagination, come and have a try with the Gleeson Tennis Team! Contact Mr Hernes or Mr Puttnins YEAR 8&9 BOYS + GIRLS KNOCKOUT TENNIS > ROUND 1 YEAR 8&9 BOYS + GIRLS KO BASKETBALL > ROUND 1

On Friday 16 October, the Year 8&9 Boys Knockout Basketball Team travelled up to the Golden Grove Recreation Centre to take on Pedare Christian College and Modbury High School. The first game against Pedare, both teams were evenly matched in what would prove to be a close match. Gleeson defeated Pedare 37-31 thanks to great teamwork, defensive efforts and hot three-point shooting. In the second game, the boys knew that they were up for a challenge playing against quality players from Modbury (a specialist basketball school), although they showed great resilience and tried their absolute best on both sides of the floor, in the end the boys ultimately went down 58-27. Well done to all players involved and a big thank you to our Year 12 coaches Aiden Thatcher and Lachlan Wallace who helped out on the day! Our Year 8&9 Girls KO Basketball Team also competed in their Round 1 matches against Parafield Gardens HS and Modbury in the Rec Centre on this day. Under the skilled guidance of Coach Mr Holland, the girls played well and also finished with one win and one loss for the competition.
