There is the image of overwhelming income- earning responsibilities of parents and teachers. 3Parents both work out of the house, and teachers run from job to job, both generating a sense of not hav- ing enough time for being involved in our youth’s lives and problems.

Our youth are often made to feel a lack of validity, which causes them understandably to be unhappy

Our youth is exposed to many inconsistencies on the part of the adult generation. It often does not 4practice what it preaches. Our youth does not see great passion for Torah learning and observance. 5 The emphasis on materialism has a nega- tive effect. Materialism seems to be more 6important than spirituality and religious development. Even religiously, everything seems so ma- terialistic, e.g., material covering the dining-room table, material of hat or head covering material of clothing, hairstyle, etc. Youth growing up in a sophisticated and secular- ized world have many questions. They often feel 7that their questions are not welcome and often ignored. Growing up in a very free society where almost anything goes, the restrictions of Torah seem 8harsh unless our youth can understand and see their benefi ts in a very down-to-earth way. They don’t feel that they are being given the understanding of a rel- evant benefi cial result in the here and now. Benefi ts in the next world are too far away. Happiness is a result of feeling and being validat- ed. How valid can our youth feel if they are con- 9stantly criticized and put down by parents, teach- ers, and the religious community in general? They are often made to feel a lack of validity, which causes them understandably to be unhappy. If they are unhappy in their environment, they wish to get away.

neglect our own basic needs. One of our basic needs is be- ing healthy, which includes getting enough exercise. My favorite form of exercising is bicycle riding. It is so much easier to bike-ride today than when I was growing up. Years ago there was no such thing as a bike lane. There were very few bike paths. There are bike lanes and paths all over New York City. Manhattan, which you would think would be the last place to have bike lanes or paths, has bike paths on both the west and east sides. You can go from Battery Park to Wash- ington Heights on a bike path. There are also various bike tours in the fi ve boroughs and in Nassau and Suffolk counties and other surround- ing areas. Although the tours allow one to ride at his own pace, there are also various distances that one can choose. The routes are clearly marked and there are rest areas where they provide water or Gatorade or fruit. On Sunday, I went to the Nassau-to-Suf- folk Bicycle Challenge. Not only was it good exercise, but I went through several well-to-do and picturesque neighborhoods that I normally would not see or, if I did drive through, would
