2021 Annual Profile

2021 Annual Profile OUR MISSION To offer a home exclusively for the purpose of providing a Christian, charitable and educational home, with love, training, understanding, guidance and to meet the spiritual, as well as physical needs of boys in need of assistance. FROM THE BOARD CHAIRMAN

Dear Friends,

Boys Farm has just completed our 61st year and what a year it has been with the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic and the changes, challenges and losses it brought upon us all. But here at Boys Farm we prayed for wisdom and strength to FOUNDERS Rev. WD Shealy, Jr. & navigate the uncertainty and fear we faced. Today Mrs. Celia S Shealy we celebrate and thank God for life itself, answers to our prayers and all of our many blessings! BOARD OF DIRECTORS Walter D Shealy III The parents of our boys continued to entrust the President & CEO well-being of their sons to our care on the farm. It Shealy Consulting Group was the ideal place on which to be quarantined. Chairman Our staff did double duty including successfully tutoring our boys through the virtual learning challenges and no one fell Evans Jones behind academically. Our staff set a wonderful example of how a family Former President & CEO should rally together, especially in a time of crisis. I am proud of the entire Howard B. Jones & Son, Inc. Boys Farm family and their performance during this trying time. They did a Vice Chairman great job! Misty M West Our mission is to provide for the physical, educational, emotional and Executive Vice President, spiritual needs of all the children at Boys Farm. By doing so and providing the West Electrical, Inc. & West Development examples discussed above we believe that our boys will be better husbands, Treasurer & Secretary fathers and men. Louise Shealy This year we have two big announcements to celebrate starting with two of President our children graduating from high school. That gives us seven over the last Berea Hardware, Inc. two years. Please read Zachery and Lydia’s stories in this profile. Mickey Crowe The second announcement relates to the events following the tragic police Senior Project Manager shooting incident in Chicago that occurred in March, which resulted in the SourceAmerica death of a 13-year-old boy named Adam Toledo. The Toledo family’s attorney is Joel Hirschhorn, who is one of the top attorneys in the country and a dear Russell Cook friend of mine whom I have known for 30 years. President & CEO 4e Ventures, LLC Joel was so moved by Adam’s tragic story and the family’s grief that he was determined to find some good to come out of this situation. He and the Kevin Meetze Toledo family are now working together to create a children’s home to help President Meetze Plumbing inner city boys in need find a sanctuary from the violence and influence that Adam faced. Kathy Wicker Sales Manager The home will be named Adam’s Place and will be modeled after Boys Farm. ISE America They have already purchased 52 acres in rural Wisconsin on which their first cottage will be built. At Joel’s request, the Boys Farm Board has agreed to Donna Rankin provide advice and consultation to Joel on the creation and development of Bank Vice President Adam’s Place. BOARD OF ADVISORS In closing we want to thank you for your loyal and faithful support of this Hank Parker ministry during the pandemic. We promise to be good stewards of the funds Professional Sportsman you provide us to continue “building boys rather than mending men.” Bob Bolin May God bless you and your family for all you do! Former MLB Pitcher

Sincerely, Bobby Richardson Walter D. Shealy III Former 2nd Baseman Chairman EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Michael A Davis FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am reaching a phase in my life in which the memories of certain periods, days, and moments with my children flood into my mind. Several of our older boys have graduated college, married, and have their own careers. But two of the children we have had since they were born are now in college, and another will be a senior in high school this fall. As parents, we all remember these young adults’ sweet voices and innocent curiosity when they were just children. We cherish those thoughts and memories so deeply, thoughts of memorable vacations, spending time together painting our old house, or going fishing on a calm lake with the familiar and comforting silence of just being in each other’s presence.

Sometimes I wonder if I did enough. I can’t help but think of mistakes I made. And now that I’m a little older and still have younger children, I wonder if I am giving them the childhood I gave their older siblings. I know I can spend more time with them if I set my mind to it, but sometimes I feel as though I just don’t seem to have the energy to do it.

I occasionally have these thoughts, and I imagine that many of you have as well. But until this year, I hadn’t truly thought of how the mothers and sometimes fathers of so many of the children that have come to Boys Farm have felt. Now that I have a more complete understanding of how hard it really is to be a parent, even in the best circumstances, I have to ask myself: what if I had actually been in their shoes, with no support, no family to guide me, and the constant reality of living in a storm with no end in sight while I tried to raise this child? Don’t children deserve another chance?

These thoughts completely break my heart. I cannot imagine the stress, pain, love, and brokenness that it takes to realize you can’t care for your own child. But we can help these children and their parents. We can help them turn to God. We can be a small part of God “restoring the years that the locusts have eaten” as promised in the book of Joel. Maybe one day, when these children are fully grown and raising their own children, they can count the many blessings God has poured upon them, and remember fondly the days of their youth.

Michael A. Davis Executive Director

Boys Farm Campus Life Manager

We are very excited to announce Jon Wooten as our new Campus Life Manager. Jon’s experience and passion for the vision and mission of Boys farm is truly unique, as Boys farm has been an integral part of his life for over 22 years, including the past 8 years serving as our Relief Houseparent. Jon established a new standard as the longest serving Relief Houseparent, demonstrating dependability and an earnest desire to invest in the lives of the children at Boys Farm.

Jon first came to Boys Farm in 1998 as a young 5th grader and having experienced life as a young man at Boys Farm, he certainly can relate to and provide sound counsel to the children under his care. After graduating from high school, Jon moved to Greenwood where he enrolled at Lander University and graduated with a degree in Marketing. But his heart never left Boys Farm, and so after working a few jobs after college he joined our staff as the Relief House Parent in 2013 and has done an outstanding job in that capacity. So outstanding that when the Campus Life Manager position became vacant, there was no question who should fill it.

Jon brings a lot of real-life experience to this position that we are confident will ensure his success. Jon will be responsible for a variety of tasks and promoting the vision and mission of Boys Farm, such as scheduling the academic tutoring for the children, house parent training, overseeing our College Advancement Program and providing extracurricular recreational activities for our staff and children. This is a big undertaking, but he won’t be alone in this task, his wife Megan will be working alongside him and together they make a wonderful team that will definitely continue to build up the boys in our program. The Mission and the Message Continues

I recently came across a letter to the Newberry Observer dated March 19, 1979. I believe that it underlines the ongoing mission of “Building Boys Rather than Mending Men” that has been the message of Boys Farm since its inception. Following is the article in its entirety:

My daddy died today. I last saw him some nineteen years ago as a small boy and then it was only for a few minutes. Although he lived nearby in another town, he never came to see me. He never wrote. He never gave a cent towards my food, clothing or education. He never took me fishing or to a ball game. He never held my hand when I was scared and alone. He never loved me. I was sorry that he died, but I was more saddened that he never knew me.

At the age of eleven, I went to Boys Farm, a children’s home in Newberry, where I was fed and clothed and loved by two very special people. In a sense they had to take the place of my real mom and dad. I think they did a good job. Of course, they could not do it alone. Only through the generosity of countless people in Newberry and throughout the country could the physical needs be met for so many growing boys. By the same token, after the visitors were gone someone had to be there to prepare meals, kiss away the tears, and oversee the chores. Someone had to be there to chasten and hug, to counsel and praise, to rebuke and encourage. Someone had to be there and by their presence say “I believe in you.” “I love you.” “I care.” How does one adequately express his thanks for such undeserved love? I don’t know, but I have often dreamed of purchasing a billboard on I-26 outside of Newberry with the following caption: “WELCOME TO NEWBERRY – HOME OF BOYS FARM – HELP US BUILD BOYS RATHER THAN MEND MEN.” One day that billboard will be a reality.

Yes, my daddy died today, and instead of sending flowers I sent a memorial to Boys Farm. You see, my Mom and Pop are still building boys and they need all the help they can get. It was my way of saying a very inadequate “thank you” to two very special people. One of the boys

So far, that billboard has not been purchased, but there is still time to fulfill that dream. As you look around, you realize the need is greater than ever before. While similar homes have well-endowed foundations to fund their ministry, God, in His wisdom has chosen you and me to support this ongoing miracle through sometimes large and oftentimes very small donations. We are so few but our God is so great! Some of you have sacrificed to help keep the doors open so that the next generation of children can find a haven in these troubling times. Thank you for your sacrifice of love as the message and the mission continues.

Mickey Crowe, Boys Farm Inc. Alumni Group Living for the Unseen

“So, we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18

These words have been our focus and driving force ever since we began our journey here at Boys Farm. With a great desire to disciple others on a daily basis, we stepped away from the local church setting of ministry and followed Jesus, away from the familiar. Since that day our hearts and focus have shifted from the seen to the unseen.

We often live as if today is the way things will always be. But we serve a God who transforms and makes beauty out of ashes. We see people and circumstances through temporary lenses, but God sees everyone through the eyes of eternity. He is always working things out in the light of eternity and for His glory. We are blessed to be a part of God’s work that will last forever.

As the boys enter this ministry they come in with uncertainties and burdens of their own lives. They see life as hard and even sometimes not fair. They have to deal with shaken family foundations, behavioral issues, and many emotional struggles. They may often feel like their world has been turned upside down and in all reality it has, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. God has intervened in their lives to bring them to a place of hope and a ministry to invest in their lives as well as their eternity.

Yes, this is the work for the Unseen. We pray that these boys would come to follow Jesus Christ as their Savior. As Christian men they would know how to love their wife and lead their own families one day. To be the ones to help change the next generation of young families from just focusing on what is seen and living in such a way that the Unseen is the greater goal.

We would like to say, “Thank You!” for not only investing in the Seen areas of these boys lives by your support, but also and most importantly, the Unseen areas of these boys’ lives. They are made for eternity and you are helping us reach them for the glory of God.
