2016 ANNUAL REPORT REFLECTING ON LEGACY A Letter from Jessica Wirgau, Executive Director

With a career in philanthropy, it didn’t take much for me to see the importance of financial planning for myself and my family. Still, when my husband Joe and I first walked into a financial planner’s office, we figured we’d be focusing on paying off our mortgage and putting our boys through college. Terms like legacy, estate, (sheesh, even retirement) seemed like pretty distant concepts for two people just wanting their two-year old to actually go to bed at night.

And yet there we were, being asked to think about our legacy. What do we want to accomplish for our family and our community now and decades from now? Pretty heavy conversation for – as noted above – two sleep-deprived parents. But it made sense. And, as it turns out, we had been thinking about the path we wanted to leave behind, not just the path ahead, for quite some time.

My oldest son, Russell, is named after my grandfather. Russell Snow spent the majority of his career as the superintendent of Jennie Clarkson, a residential facility for at-risk young women in Valhalla, NY. I didn’t know my grandfather particularly well. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s by the time my family had moved closer to him, and he passed when I was barely a teenager. Instead, what I know of him I’ve learned from the stories my parents MISSION have shared. In many ways, they are vivid snapshots, powerful more for the impression they leave about the type of man he was than for the specific details of his life. My parents would talk about the many, many times he was asked to walk a former Jennie Clarkson resident down the aisle at her wedding. Or the hours he and my grandmother would The mission of the Community spend laughing with friends while my dad and his siblings played nearby. These snapshots form an overall image of my Foundation of the New River Valley is grandfather as a kind, joyful, compassionate person who dedicated his life to helping people. I wanted to connect my son to that legacy. Actually, I want to be part of that legacy as well. to enrich our community by providing So, back in that financial planning office, I began to think not just about how Joe and I might plan those mythical years professional management services to donors when we actually have more time and money to give back to our community, but what we do now at our jobs, as for their charitable causes, awarding visionary parents, as children, and as neighbors to live a life of kindness that, hopefully, lives beyond us. In the past year at the Community Foundation, I’ve seen hundreds of people who are leaving a legacy of compassion for this region. In this grants and scholarships, and nurturing report alone, you’ll see how donors are helping dozens of students to earn a college degree, how agencies are banding together to make childcare and social services available to all children and families, and how a couple honored their collaborations in our community. parents’ love of animals with an endowment. These stories make clear that we are building our legacies right now, each day. If we’re fortunate, we get to see the impact of that work during our lifetimes. I know I speak for our board and staff when I thank all of our donors, partners, volunteers, and friends for making the Foundation a part of their life and the legacy they leave in support of the New River Valley. Providing Regional Data to Support Programs

As part of the CFNRV’s partnership with the NRV Regional Commission to advance the NRV Livability Initiative, we launched an online data dashboard, an interactive data tool that can be used for community decision making, grant proposals, program design and evaluation, and general data gathering. This dashboard provides insight into topics like housing stock by year, vacant housing, educational attainment, percentage of children living in poverty, and the impact of tourism, among many other data points.
