In this study, I examinedthe lived experiencesof women in Afghanistanunder the Talibanregime, as articulatedby ordinarywomen themselves.Data from 11 women were gatheredthrough the use of individual interviews,and analyzedusing Miles and Hubermans'(1994) analytic framework. Themes emerged that describedthe Taliban regime'spolicies regarding Afghan women,the overallresponses of women to the policies,including the impactof thosepolicies at the time (1996-2001),the ongoing impact,and the situationof women in the post-Talibanera. The Talibanregime's anti-women policies denied women education,employment, and freedomof movement.Those who committedany infractionswere met with severe punishment.The impact of thesepolicies led to variouspsychological effects, including: anxiety,fear, and synptoms of depressionand posttraumatic stress. Despite the condemnablerestrictions, Afghan women's agency,no matterhow limited, was present andcontinuously exercised on differentoccasions. While the phenomenon has troubled a significant part of the world, Pakistan is no exception in this regard. This research explores the role of the Mahsud tribe in the rise of the religious militancy in South Waziristan Agency (SWA). It further investigates the impact of militancy on the socio-cultural and political transformation of the Mahsuds. The study undertakes this research based on theories of religious militancy, borderland dynamics, ungoverned spaces and transformation. The findings suggest that the rise of religious militancy in SWA among the Mahsud tribes can be viewed as transformation of tribal revenge into an ideological conflict, triggered by flawed state policies. These policies included, disregard of local culture and traditions in perpetrating military intervention, banning of different militant groups from SWA and FATA simultaneously, which gave them the raison d‘etre to unite against the state and intensify violence and the issues resulting from poor state governance and control. -

Signs hold the meaning and convey it to the published during 2011-2017 were selected and categorized under poster design, interpreter for inferring meaning out of it; for example, the dressing, props and titles, as these aspects traffic lights direct the traffic without using verbal means of act as signs for depicting cultural insights. -

Using data gleaned from interviews with the MUD designers, the authors present three findings: (a) fun is a key difference between simulations and reality, because a MUD user can always walk away from a game that is not fun but cannot walk away from difficult real-life situations; (b) simulated social systems require time and commitment from a fairly large population, which conflicts with the typical level of patience observed in most computer game players; and (c) the roles of technicians and designers as mediators in simulated social environments is an area requiring detailed study, because their attitudes toward technical constraints, social values, and stereotypes exert a strong influence on the appearance of their final products. KEYWORDS: computer-mediated simulation; cyberspace; online game; simulated reality The use of computer networks and computer simulations to study social science issues has so far been very limited; thus, their potential as research tools in this area has remained largely unexplored. Simulation applications in the social sciences are cate- gorized as system modeling, computer-mediated simulation, and microsimulation. The first uses computer simulation tools and techniques to create models for the pur- pose of studying social system dynamics and processes. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 A3STRACT This thesis attempts to discover and explain the processes generating the ’cultural synthesis’ that appears to be characterising the ideas and behaviour of Pakistani teenage girls in London - a synthesis that is a blend of traditional Pakistani ideas and modern British ones. It is suggested that the processes of learning i.e. socialization and education, produce this cultural synthesis.. Chapter One sets out the problem and advances four propositions which might be employed to analyse and resolve it. The dialectical nature of the relationships between ideas and behaviour and between education and socialization is examined. Chapters Two, Three and Four deal with the ethnography. Chapter Two describes the fieldwork, the universe of study and the social background, migration and settlement patterns of adult ’first-generation1 Pakistanis in London. -

The Jihad Paradox S. Paul Kapurand Sumit Ganguly Pakistan and Islamist Militancy in South Asia Islamist militants based in Pakistan have repeatedly been involved in major terrorist incidents through out the world, such as the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington and the 2005 London subway bombings.1 They regularly strike government, coalition, and civilian targets in Afghanistan, hampering efforts to stabilize the country. Also, they frequently target India, threatening to incite an Indo-Pakistani conflict that could potentially escalate to the nuclear level. Pakistan-based militancy thus severely undermines regional and international security. Although this problem has received widespread international attention since 2001 and the advent of the United States' "global war on terror," the Pakistan-militant nexus is as old as the Pakistani state. From its founding in 1947 to the present day, Pakistan has used religiously motivated militant forces as strategic tools.2 How and why did this situation come about? How has S. Paul Kapur is Professor in the National Security Affairs Department at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and a faculty affiliate at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation. The arguments advanced in this article are solely his and do not necessarily reflect the views of any other in dividual or of the U.S. government. Sumit Ganguly is Professor of Political Science and holds the Rabindranath Tagore Chair in Indian Cultures and Civilizations at Indiana University, Bloomington.
