Welcome to the 2011/2012 Girl Calendar of Events! WOW! We are turning 100 years old! It is time to celebrate a great milestone in the life of the greatest girl leadership program in the world. I, for one, am excited to be a part of this great history, and I hope that you will join in the many programs and events that will be taking place to celebrate our centennial birthday. It took many great women to traverse the trail that has led to this place in time. Many great entrepreneurs, politicians, movie stars, artists, poets and scholars received their start in the Girl Scout organization. Women like Shirley Temple Black–movie star and US Ambassador; Sandra Day O’Conner–first woman Justice of the Supreme Court; Lucille Ball–actress; Barbara Walters–newscaster and one of the first women TV anchors; Madeline Albright–first woman US Secretary of State; Anita DeFranz–Olympian and first African American woman to be appointed to the International Olympics Committee; and Sally Ride–first woman in space, attribute much of their success to their Girl Scout experience. Our 100th anniversary year–2012–is the “Year of the Girl.” One girl can make a difference but girls together can change the world. As we celebrate our 100th birthday let us be thankful to all those great women in our communities who helped to foster Girl Scouts locally which in turn grew the organization nationally. Let us also look forward to the journey ahead in helping to build girls of Courage, Confidence and Character who will make the world a better place. Let’s do this by helping girls discover their world, connect with those who can foster their growth into young women of the future, and help them to take action on projects that will help their communities. I challenge our girls to explore and question the world around them and strive for the answers. I challenge them to develop good decision making skills that they can take with them on their journey throughout their lives. I challenge them to set goals, develop a plan for achieving their goals, and believe in themselves. I challenge staff and volunteers to be the best mentors possible by following the Girl Scout Promise and Law and to take our role model responsibilities seriously. I challenge all of us to go above and beyond to help and nurture girls as they explore the world of opportunities ahead of them. Let us all be an example of what we want our girls to be. Let us all continue to learn and grow so that we can help our girls explore and benefit from all that the world has to offer them. It will be a wonderful year of celebration. Don’t forget to sign in on the Girl Scouts of Central California South page and keep us posted on all that you and your girls do during this 100th birthday year.

Happy Birthday to You All,

Cathy

3 Welcome to the Calendar of Events, which serves as Girl Scouts of Central California South’s Annual Program and Adult Learning Guide. You will notice some changes to the layout of this year’s calendar in addition to more information provided than ever before. We continue to strive to provide more resources and programming information each year. What’s even more thrilling is Girl Scouts is turning 100 in March 2012! We are kicking off the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts this fall with a lot of fun and exciting 100th anniversary events – from Gala’s, family BBQ’s, historical badge workshops, and much more. There’s no better time to get involved as we prepare for our second century of Girl Scouting in the USA. Our Calendar of Events offers leaders, advisors, and parents interesting ideas and resources that provide a variety of opportunities for Girl Scouts, whether involved in a Troop or individually registered as a Juliette. The program activities listed in this guide are designed with girls in mind to spark their interests, address their concerns, build their skills, and explore the world around them. Activities may be led by Council/Volunteer staff or collaborators. Interested in learning more about The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, the new program resource that is available beginning this fall? Be sure to read pages 6-8, where you’ll learn more about its components and how it complements the Girl Scout journeys by helping girls build skills for success. This year’s Adult Learning section is bigger and better than ever with numerous adult learning courses, including enrichment programs. We have also provided a forms section for the various activities. Depending on the program, the event registration may need to be mailed or faxed to the group providing the program or event, and not to the Council’s Program Department. Be sure to check for registration deadlines, and enclose a deposit or fee if required. Not every program registration will be the same, so remember to follow the specific instructions given. The Program Team adds activities throughout the year and this information is included in the Council’s weekly email newsletter, Hot Topics, our and social media pages. Take a moment to explore the Calendar of Events as we begin an unforgettable year of Girl Scout sisterhood, service, and celebrations!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

4 Girl Scout Pathways Which Pathway is right for you? There are more ways for girls to participate in Girl Scouts than ever before! We call them Pathways, and they include Troop, events, camp, virtual, series, and travel. They were developed nationally by matching grade-level preferences and availability with flexible options. Girl Scout Pathways are how we deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to all girls supported by a comprehensive model of volunteerism—it is our delivery system and internal way of organizing our program offerings. For many girls, camp is the first opportunity they have to experience archery, fishing, ropes course, horseback riding, and star gazing. Then Camp Pathway is available to any girl regardless of previous Girl Scout involvement. Series Pathway The Series Pathway gives girls the opportunity to explore a specific theme or topic without making a long-term commitment or joining a Troop. Each girl chooses to participate in the entire series as a complete program package; series offerings may be short term (for example, six days of two-hour daily Troop Pathway meetings) or longer term (such as meeting every two weeks for 12 weeks) but always is shorter than an The Troop Pathway offers the same group of girls the academic year. Note: Series offerings may require a opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, pre-requisite to participate from session to session, usually over a span of nine to twelve months. Girls because girls build on the skills learned at each may join at any time during the Troop year. Note: A session. Troop that also goes camping or travels as a group is still operating in the Troop Pathway (not the Camp or Travel Pathway Travel Pathways). Every girl deserves a chance to see the world. Girl Event Pathway Scouts offers many different travel opportunities so girls can see new places, meet new people, and learn The Event Pathway is for Girl Scouts who like to pick about different cultures and ideas. The Travel Pathway presents girls with Ambassadors, or a leadership conference for teenage opportunities to prepare, plan, earn money, and Girl Scouts. The primary difference between events participate in travel opportunities through group and all other pathways is that different girls travel, Council-sponsored trips, or nationally participate in each event, as opposed to one group of sponsored excursions. Day and weekend camping is offered during the school year while resident camp is generally offered during the summer months. Going to a camp is one of the most popular and recognized aspects of Girl Scouts.

This pathway, when completed, will be delivered by virtual The Virtual Pathway, still in development, is an online volunteers through a group-based model that delivers Girl Scout community that provides girls with the the Girl Scout Leadership Experience via Journey opportunity to participate in Girl Scouting without books, and an issue-based model that delivers the Girl regard to geographic location. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting Girl Scouting has never been more exciting with this new program resource, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, which will be available in the Council Shops this fall. Girls and volunteers will love the fun, eye opening activities and the all- in one badge book and handbook format. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting complements the Girl Scout Journeys by helping girls build skills to be successful and gain the confidence to do amazing things! Each age level will have its own Girl’s Guide and is presented in a beautiful standard-size binder. The Girl’s Guide includes the grade level handbook; requirements for Legacy, Financial Literacy, and Cookie Business badges, and Make Your Own badges; information about earning Bridging and Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards (for Juniors through Ambassadors); and accessory pages such as scrapbooking pages. Material in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is written to the girl with clarity and easy-to-follow steps, so adult guides are not available for helping girls with their badges. All Girl’s Guides to Girl Scouting are for sale at 25 percent off through March 12, 2012 for $16.87, plus tax in the Council Shops (normal retail is $22.50). Order your Girl’s Guides now through either Council Shop to ensure your Troop or group is the first to receive this new program resource!

How do Journeys and badges work together? The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting works with national leadership Journeys to add skill-building opportunities to the leadership skills which girls learn through the three keys of Discover, Connect, and Take Action. Journeys are the only program resources that cover all 15 outcomes. Badges build specific skills and are primarily aimed at the Discover “Girls develop a strong sense of self” outcome. What badge categories are being included in The Girl’s Guide? The badge categories included are Legacy, Financial Literacy, Cookie Business badges and the Make Your Own badges. The seven Legacy badges – for Brownies through Ambassadors–which honor the heritage of Girl Scouts while offering contemporary skill-building activities are Artist, Athlete, Citizen, Cook, First Aid, Girl Scout Way, and Naturalist. Badge activities will be progressive, so girls can build on skills they’ve learned at each level. For instance, when they earn the Cook Badge as Brownies, they’ll add to their experience when they earn the Cook Badge as Juniors all the way up to Ambassador. For Brownies, Juniors, Seniors, and Ambassadors, 12 badges are offered. Cadettes are offered 14. Daisies are offered 10 Petals and Promise Center, two Financial Literacy, and two Cookie Business “leaves.” Girls can earn two Financial Literacy and two Cookie Business badges per level except for Cadettes who can earn three. Each badge has five steps. Girls complete all five to earn the badge. (There are three choices for completing each step. Girls need only do one.) The five steps vary depending on the skill girls are learning.

18 Historical Badge Workshops In order to truly appreciate how far Girl Scouting has come in the last 100 years, we are reviving ten historical Girl Scout Proficiency Badges, one from each decade. These ten badges will be available in limited quantities and only for the 2011/2012 Girl Scout Year. After September 30, 2012, they will not be available. To complete these badges girls will have three options: 1. Attend a Council Sponsored Badge Workshop – ten will be hosted around the Council area throughout the year. 2. As a Troop you may download the requirements from either www.girlscoutsccs.org or www.facebook.com/gsccs and work on the badges as a Troop, complete a Historical Proficiency Badge Order form and mail it back to the Program Department with payment. 3. As an independent Girl Scout working with a trusted adult, download the requirements as a Troop would, and return the order form once completed with your payment. As these are historical proficiency badges, they are to be worn on the front of the vest, sash or tunic. The badges themselves will be identical to the historical badges they represent with the only difference being they are outlined in th Gold, to represent the 100 anniversary. As a Service Unit, add 100 new girls. 99. Work on the “Housekeeper” badge from the Junior handbook during the early 70’s (blue book). Why is it important to know these things today even if you don’t plan to be a “housewife?” 100. Do you have a bridge nearby? Plan a “bridge into the next century” event.

Additional ideas:

101. Try to break a record. See how many Girl Scouts you can get together to say the Girl Scout promise at the same time. 102. Plan a camping event where girls are taught the “lost arts” of semaphores, knots, etc. 103. Crete a time capsule including a vest/sash, books, etc. 104. Learn about our cookie history. Find an original cookie recipe and compare it to the current cookies. 105. Are there any community leaders in your area who were Girl Scouts? Interview them to see how being a Girl Scout helped them achieve their goals. 106. Plant a “centennial garden” in honor of the birthday. Check with a local home improvement store for donations. 107. In keeping with the “Forever Green” theme, start a recycling station for your school. Check with your city’s solid waste division for help. 108. Participate in or watch the Rose Parade on January 2, 2012. Check out the Girl Scouts of Los Angeles’ website for more details. 109. Take a tour of your local Girl Scout office to see what services they provide. 110. Schedule an event for adults to do a few Girl Scout activities, including working on badges from a different time. They can also make s’mores! 111. Celebrate S’mores! Hold a s’mores contest with prizes for the most unusual s’more.

38 Additional program activities are developed throughout the year and updated on the Council website. Please visit www.girlscoutsccs.org regularly.

A Tree for the Future Every spring The sap rises in the trees From root to branch And makes a tree that looks dead Blossom with green leaves And life. So it is that the Scouting Spirit Rises within you and Inspires you to put forth Your best. By Juliette Gordon Low

Volunteers are the heart of Girl Scouting, and without volunteers, Girl Scouts would not be able to help girls develop into tomorrow’s leaders. THANK YOU for all you do!
