Basketball Unit

History­

James Naismith taught PE in Massachusetts and was given the task of organizing some type of activity to fill the months between football and baseball season that could be played indoors during the winter months. He had the idea of a non­contact sport where players were not allowed to run with the ball, peach baskets were hung from the balconies at either end of the gym. The object was to shoot the ball into your basket and prevent the other team from doing the same. The first game was played in December of 1891, and named .

Skills­

Passing: The quickest way to move the ball down the court. Three different types of passes:

1. Bounce

2. Chest

3. Overhead

Dribbling: Dribble with your fingertips, keep eyes and head up, keep dribble below the waist, and push the ball in

Front and to the side, keep your body in between the ball and the defender, use non­ hand to protect the ball.

Types of dribbles and changes of direction:

1. Right hand 4. Reverse

2. Left Hand 5. Between the legs

3. Crossover 6. Behind the back

Shooting: Think BEEF, also keep your shoulders square to the basket

B­ balance

E­ elbow up and in

E­ eyes on the rim

F­ follow through Lay­up: Laying the ball off the into the basket.

Right handed­ dribble with your right hand, step with your left, right knee and right hand go towards the target, place the ball softly off the top right corner of the square

Left­handed dribble with your left hand, step with your right, left knee and left hand go towards the target, place the ball off the top left corner of the square

Rebound: Controlling the ball after a missed shot. Find someone on the opposite tem to box out, establish your position closer to the basket, jump and grab the ball, outlet.

Rules and Knowledge­

1. A tem consists of five players.

2. Game consists of four quarters; each quarter is 7 or 8 minutes in length.

3. Games are started with a in the middle of the court.

4. Each basket is worth 2 points. Free­throws (unguarded shot by a player after a ) are worth one . Shots made behind the 3­point arc are worth 3 points (there are no 3 pointers in PE).

5. Dribbling violations:

Double­dribble, pick up ball, resume dribbling OR dribbling with two hands

Traveling­moving illegally with the ball, walking with the ball without a dribble

6. Ball is put back in to play with a pass from the sideline form the team that did not have the ball for – , double­dribble, ball goes out of bounds

7. Fouls­blocking, charging, hacking, holding
