Dear Parishioners,

Bishop Murphy has written to us on a matter of great concern:

Catholics in the of New York, particularly those in our Diocese, should be very alarmed by movements pro- moting assisted suicide legislation. As we are doing now with the Education Investment Tax Credit and have done in the past about important issues regarding life, we must work together. . . to engage actively in pushing back any legislation which compromises the gift of life.

[Please] visit www.catholicendoflife.org for solid information and resources. We also need Catholics throughout the Diocese to contact the Governor’s office and the Long Island delegation of assembly members and senators. This is easily done through the Catholic Action Network at www.nyscatholic.org.

[Please see] the document Now and in the Hour of our Death, published by the bishops of New York State. This very user friendly document provides important and relevant information. . . You can visit www.nyscatholic.org to get a copy of the document in English or Spanish.

Finally, let us commit to praying for the gift of life and the conversion of hearts and minds for the respect and dignity of God’s greatest gift, from conception to natural death.

Sincerely yours in Christ +William Murphy Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre

Let us heed the Bishop’s guidance on this important matter of Respect Life. If we legalize assisted suicide, pressure on people to end their lives will dramatically rise. People with terminal illnesses will feel the need to “get out of the way” and not drain financial resources. They will inevitably get pressure, subtle or not so subtle, from relatives, health care providers and insurers. They will be made to feel as though the very fact that they are drawing breath is an inconven- ience to someone else.

I have already seen this happen all too often. The meaning of our lives is not how young, powerful, rich or healthy we may be. The meaning of our lives is whether we can love and are loved. You can love even when you’re in a coma.

Let’s join Bishop Murphy and everyone in our Diocese in prayer and action in defense of life, from conception to natural death.

Sincerely yours in Christ Father Joe

P.S. I will continue publishing the Transition team Report next week.

Wednesday, March 25 Liturgies at Retreat with Fr. Sean Davidson St. Anthony of Padua Parish

At St. Anthony’s Parish, we observe the Lenten fast as a preparation for the celebration of Easter and for the renewal of our Baptismal promises. Both the prayer environment in the church and some of the elements of our liturgy are different than they are during the rest of the church year. The simplicity of our prayer environment helps us to focus on what is essential in the presence of Christ in the people that are gathered, in the Morning Word that is proclaimed and the Eucharist that is shared. You will also notice that there are no flow- Prayer ers in the church, another reminder of the simplic- ity of the season. Instead of singing “Alleluia” to announce the Gospel, we will sing instead another verse which The Liturgy of the Hours praises our Lord for His saving words. On Easter, our voices will ring out again”Alleluia!” Monday through Friday 8:45 A.M. The Lord is risen!

Knights to Shave Their Heads to Support Childhood Can- cer Research St. Baldrick’s Foundation event to raise money for lifesaving research The St. Baldrick’s Founda- tion, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at Miller’s Commack Ale House in the Target Shopping Center on Vets Highway Sunday, March 15th (12:00 noon – 6:00 PM), where more than 200 “Shavees” will shave their heads in soli- darity with kids with cancer and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers! The Fr. Thomas A. Judge Knights of Columbus team is just one of several teams that have been formed to maximize their fund raising efforts. With just a few weeks to go they’re well on their way to reaching their goal of $11,000! If you would like to make a donation on their heads, please visit their St. Baldrick’s website at http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/FrJudgeKofC and click on “Donate” or call team Captain Bob Slingo at (631) 486-2875. Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Bald- rick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease. About St. Baldrick’s Foundation The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promis- ing research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick’s coordinates its signature head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $154 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most bril- liant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, and the new Interna- tional Scholar grants train researchers to work in developing countries. For more information about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation please call 1.888.899.BALD or visit www.StBaldricks.org.
