Pastor’s Note Greetings in Christ to you all! This coming week, the Church marks the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. Paul was an enormously important figure in the life of the early Church. His missionary journeys throughout the Mediterranean world helped establish and strengthen the growing Christian communities in cities such as Antioch, Athens, Corinth, and Rome itself. His letters form a large part of the New Testament, and really constitute the beginning of Christian , as St. Paul works out what the Paschal Mystery means in the life of each individual believer and in the life of the Church as a whole. But Paul’s conversion is also one of the most mysterious events. He describes himself almost in the terms of a fanatic Pharisee- extremely zealous for the Mosaic law to the point of persecuting the Church. There isn’t any indication of pre-Christian sympathies in Paul. Yet following his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, he turns around completely. There is a message there for us; that the Holy Spirit can work so totally as to change the direction of an entire life. It’s also a reminder that God can bring even His most implacable enemies around through His grace. Fr. Ken Kirkman
