Todd Belardi So that we can all be true disciples of Jesus that reflects His commandment to "Love one another" September 13, 2020 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time What right do we have to limit the amount and degree of forgiveness we show to others when we are so desperately in need of it ourselves? In not wanting someone who hurt us to downplay or forget the gravity of their wrong, we cling to anger, resentment, and wrath as a way of maintaining control. It is a way to acknowledge and express our deep hurt. We fail to realize that in doing so we hold ourselves hostage to these destructive feelings and actually become mired in the bondage of sin. All we gain is further alienation from ourselves, others, and especially God. We are no longer free but tethered to all of this unresolved negativity. Don’t we really want to let it go? The fact is that we need to. A good self-reflective posture will quickly show us that when the shoe is on the other foot and we are the ones in need of forgiveness, we desire it above anything else. This is especially true with our relationship with God. It is hypocritical to want one thing for ourselves and something else for another. Yet, many act in precisely this way. Perhaps we think that in offering forgiveness, even for the most grievous of wrongs, somehow excuses the person of their wrong and makes it almost acceptable. This is what makes revenge, retaliation, and punishment so attractive. We see forgiveness as being an eraser that easily wipes away the offense without consequence. Or, we may believe that in offer- ing forgiveness I must somehow forget the wrong and open myself as a victim of even greater possible hurts in the future. In fact, forgiving my sister or brother of their wrongful actions or attitudes involves none of this. It does not erase any- thing or position me vulnerably as a doormat to be walked on. A Christian is a keyhole through which others see God Forgiveness is an act of freedom that restores honest dialogue, shares true, and heartfelt feelings and acknowledges the consequences of an action. It admits that the wrong has caused a hurt that must be healed and squarely positions responsi- bility on the offender. The act of forgiveness recognizes our sinfulness and brokenness. It also admits that the most saintly among us is capable of doing very grave and deep harm to another person. It sees that we all can be victims of our passions and works in progress that deserve unlimited chances to get it right. With forgiveness, I release myself from the bonds of negativity and pursue a path of restoration, wholeness, and healing. I do not forget the wrong nor do I dismiss it. Sometimes, we have to stay far away from the one who hurt us. But we can still heal internally and be free. For the one who wants to be forgiven and the one who needs offer forgiveness, the journey can be an adventure in learning what brought us to this place and what is needed to move forward. This is exactly how God treats us. Why would we not want to do the same for others? • A Brief History of St. Anthony's Church
A Brief History of St. Anthony's Church. Dedication St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Charleston, WV, 1955, p. 5-15. CAP at Orchard Lake. In 1904 a large Polish population in a West Side industrial plant was the cause for the founding of the present St. Anthony Parish. Father Agatho Rolf, O.F.M. Cap., said the first Mass in the Kelly Axe Factory, wherein many of the Polish population were employed, in the Fall of 1905. Father Agatho was then pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Charleston. His assistant, Father Mau- rice Ackerman, O.F.M.Cap., also was saying Masses in 1906, in the same plant. In the summer of 1906, Father Cyprian Gehrling, O.F.M.Cap., was appointed to look after the spiritual needs of the Polish people and he continued saying Mass in this location until a church was built. In the fall of 1905, the Most Rev. Patrick J. Donahue, Bishop of Wheeling, purchased the site of the present church and school. The building of the original church began on September 20, 1907, and was completed on January 4, 1908. Even though the church was uncompleted at the time the first Mass was said on December 8, 1907. Father Cyprian blessed the church on January 26, 1908, under the patronage of St. Ladislaus. The business recession of 1909 caused many of the Polish population to leave Charleston, and the parish sustained a gradual loss of members. Father Cyprian remained as pastor until the summer of 1918, when he was succeeded by Father Gregory Loebach, O.F.M.Cap.

  • St. John Bosco Awardees
St. John Bosco Awards [Daria] John Bosco was born in 1815. He was an Italian priest, an educator and writer, who dedicated his life to the education and service of young people. He employed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, John Bosco dedicated his works to St. Francis when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco. His good works continue today and those familiar with his life and ministry will celebrate the 200 anniversary of his birth next year. St. John Bosco was canonized by Pope Pius XI (11th) on Easter Sunday 1934. He was given the title, “Father and Teacher of Youth.” Today he is known as the patron saint of those who work with young people. ! ! • Saint Anthony of Padua
Name _____________________________________ Date _______________ Saint Anthony of Padua Directions: Read the biography and answer the questions. Fernando Martins de Bulhoes was born in Portugal where he went to a Catholic school and studied to become a priest. After his ordination, he encountered a group of travelling friars, whose order had only recently been founded by Saint Francis of Assisi eleven years earlier. Inspired by their simple and evangelical way of life, he decided to join them and took the name Anthony in honor of Saint Anthony of Egypt. From there he set out on a missionary journey to Spain, but he became ill and tried to return home. His ship was set off course and he arrived in Italy instead. There he took up a new ministry and became as well-known preacher and teacher. He earned the attention of Saint Francis, who did not think academic study and teaching held a place in his order. Saint Anthony convinced him otherwise and proved to be a genuine follower of the Franciscan way of life. Saint Francis entrusted all theological formation of friars to him from that point forward. Saint Anthony is best known as the patron saint of lost items. A Franciscan novice once stole his personal copy of the Book of Psalms. Saint Anthony prayed that it would be found.
