We Are Glad You’re With Us Today! Pastor’s Note Greetings in Christ to you all! We’ve all probably heard enough about “fake news” over the past few years, but, sadly, because of the current political climate, clickbait and “gotcha” headlines are still very much the order of the day. A controversy has emerged over the implantation of a document being discussed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops about the Eucharist. Immediately, outlets such as the New York Times and Washington Post reported in frenzied terms that the Bishops were going to deny Communion to various and sundry politicians who have publicly supported abortion, in direct opposition to what the Church has always taught unwaveringly about the sanctity of human life. Only there was a problem. The document in question hasn’t been written yet. The vote that was taken was to authorize the committee to begin drafting a document. And one of the most important points of discussion is not something you’ll find in the headlines of American media, but for us it is the most important. In 2019, a survey from the Pew Research Center found that only about 30% of American Catholics believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. The prevalent belief is that the action of the Mass is, in the end, only symbolic, even if those symbols are powerful. Confronted with that sobering fact, it seemed to many bishops and priests that, as a Church, we have failed to communicate a central belief and facet of Catholic life, and that’s a problem that needs to be addressed. The sad fact, however, is that that perfectly comprehensible goal has been subsumed into yet another news cycle of hysterical political partisanship. In his encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Pope St. John Paul II speaks about how the church draws her life from the Eucharist- and this could not happen if the most central act of our worship were merely symbolic. I think it’s entirely appropriate that we begin to grow deeper in our appreciation of the beautiful gift of the Precious Body and Blood of Christ. Meanwhile, let’s have the newspapers focus on what they’re really meant for: crosswords and box scores. Fr.
