    The Genesis of “The Rule of Ten Virtues of the B.V.M.” Historical Brief Br. Andrew R. Mączyński, MIC Author The Rule of the Ten Virtues of the Most B.V.M., or the Rule of the Ten Pleasures of the Most B.V.M. (Regula Decem Beneplacitorum Beatissimae Virginis Mariae), is one of the few religious rules approved in spite of the decree issued by the IV Lateran Council in 1215. This decree forbade the approval of the newly founded religious orders on any other than one of the previously approved rules. The Rule was composed by a Franciscan, Fr. Gilbert Nicolas, better known as Gabriel Maria, the name he received from Pope Leo X by his brief (breve) of June 11, 1517. By this act, the Pope wished to emphasize the special devotion that Fr. Gilbert had for the mystery of the Annunciation of the B.V.M. Gilbert Nicolas, who also appears in history under the name of Johanes Molezius, was born around 1460 in Riom in the Province of Auvergne, France. Influenced as a 16-year old youth by a sermon by a certain Franciscan preacher on the topic of the Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M., he discerned his vocation to the religious life. In 1475, in Lafond, near La Rochelle, he joined the Franciscans of the Strict Observance. After completing his novitiate and pronouncing his religious vows, he was sent to the monastery in Amboise in order to continue his education that concluded at his priestly ordination and taking the post of a lector of theology.

    The Patrocinium of St. Joseph Calasanz November 27 Although the Feast of St. Joseph Calasanz is celebrated on August 25, this date often falls at the end of summer vacation for most Piarist Schools. As a result, the religious order has designated November 27, which is the day he opened Europe’s first free public school, as the Patrocinium, a special day to honor and celebrate St. Joseph Calasanz. Joseph was born on September 11, 1557 in a tiny village called Peralta de la Sal. He was a Spanish priest from Aragon, Spain, who went to Rome at the end of the sixteenth century and started schools for poor and homeless children. He also started a religious congregation to serve these schools which is today spread throughout the world. He was well educated in philosophy, law and theology at the Spanish universities of Estadilla, Lerida, and Valencia. His family initially did not support his religious calling. His father wanted him to marry and to continue the family, but after recovering from an illness which brought him close to death, Calasanz was ordained as a priest on December 17, 1583. He subsequently became vicar general of Tremp. He later relinquished much of his inheritance and resigned his vicariate. For the next ten years, he held various posts as a secretary, administrator and theologian in the Diocese of Albarracín in Spain. In 1592, Joseph went to Rome, where he became a theologian in the service of Cardinal Marcoantonio Colonna and a tutor to his nephew. He worked alongside St. Camillus de Lellis during the plague, which hit Rome at the time.

The text is also available in French and Russian (see attached pdf files). The Battle of Warsaw was one of the most important moments of the Polish-Bolshevik war, one of the most decisive events in the history of Poland, Europe and the entire world. However, excluding Poland, this fact is almost completely unknown to the citizens of European countries. This phenomenon was noticed a decade after the battle had taken place by a British diplomat, Lord Edgar Vincent d’Abernon, a direct witness of the events. In his book of 1931 “The Eighteenth Decisive Battle of the World: Warsaw, 1920”, he claimed that in the contemporary history of civilisation there are, in fact, few events of greater importance than the Battle of Warsaw of 1920. There is also no other which has been more overlooked. To better understand the origin and importance of the battle of Warsaw, one needs to become acquainted with a short summary of the Polish-Bolshevik war and, first and foremost, to get to know the goals of both fighting sides. We ought to start with stating the obvious, namely, that the Bolshevik regime, led by Vladimir Lenin, was, from the very beginning, focused on expansion. Prof. Richard Pipes, a prolific American historian, stated: “the Bolsheviks took power not to change Russia, but to use it as a trampoline for world revolution”.

    chapter 2 Exploring the Distinctiveness of Neo-Latin Jesuit Didactic Poetry in Naples: The Case of Nicolò Partenio Giannettasio Claudia Schindler The Jesuit Nicolò Partenio Giannettasio (1648–1715) was one of the most intriguing and influential authors of seventeenth-century Naples.1 Born in 1648, in Parthenope (i.e., Naples), as he used to call his home city, he entered the Jesuit order at the age of sixteen, having lost his family during the plague of 1656. Like other members of the Society of Jesus, Giannettasio was a highly educated man with a wide range of interests: he studied Scholastic philosophy at Palermo, taught mathematics at the Collegio Massimo in Naples for more than ten years, traveled in Egypt,2 and designed the Santa Maria del Gesù church in Sorrento, which was built near the Jesuit residence La Cocumella and is still extant today.3 1 This chapter is a revised version of my German-language article, “Wissen ist Macht! CEU eTD Collection 2 Abstract The thesis investigates religious policy, church-state relationships and dissent in late Kádárist Hungary. Firstly, by pointing out the interconnectedness between the ideology of the Catholic grass-root Bokor-movement and the established religious political context of the 1970s and 1980s, the thesis argues that the Bokor can be considered as a religiously expressed form of political dissent. The subject creates an opportunity to analyze security policy under current geopolitical conditions in the context of Poland’s membership in the EU. Polish literature concerning eastern issues is dominated by classical geopolitical thinking and numerous references to grand narratives. Therefore, the study explores the critical geopolitics theoretical approach. The theory provides a tool for understanding how identity, security discourses and geographical reasoning are being constructed. Security issues, especially those concerning Russia, are in Polish literature and public debates discussed by means of political realism, i.e. a fight over dominance, a sense of threat, and the need of power maximization. The aim of this thesis is to analyze arguments, which are used in Poland to justify the development of the Eastern Partnership Project. Relying on extensive studies on Estonia’s situation, I want to follow through correlations between geopolitics and identity and its influence on Poland’s perception of Polish and European security. The aim of the thesis was to show the construction of threats in Poland.
