Tuesday: sus Christ, King of the Universe Wednesday: "Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least Thursday: St. Andrew, Apostle brothers of mine, you did for me." Today we celebrate the Friday: feast of an unusual kind of king. Our Lord Jesus Christ, Saturday: King of the Universe, does not run his kingdom in the Next Sunday: 1st Sunday of Advent standard fashion. Instead of insisting upon the pomp and circumstance that usually surrounds earthly royalty, Jesus has a different focus. He thinks not of himself, but of those he loves. And in today's Gospel, his interest is espe- cially focused on the poor and suffering in our midst. Our King asks us to care for those in need--the hungry, John “Tim” Thompson the homeless, the foreigner, the sick and suffering. But to our St. Anthony Parish family then, he goes farther; he tells us that in caring for these least brethren, we will be ministering to HIM! What an incredible promise. Not only do we carry out the com- Memorial Donations for mand to love our neighbor when we protect those in Christmas Flowers: need, but we also show our love for Jesus in a direct and Please remember to send in your concrete way. This love for Christ through others is so real memorial donation for the flowers to that Jesus actually tells us that our place on Judgment decorate the church at Christmas. And these will go lished in the church bulletin it must off to eternal punishment." On the other hand, the be turned in by December 10th. "righteous" who ministered to the weak and poor will en- joy eternal life. Our King has spoken loud and clear. Now comes the question of whether or not we are obeying his “In all your actions seek in the first place the Kingdom of orders? God and his glory”. Each of us is called to examine how well we are caring for St. Bernardine of Siena the least among us. Sometimes, this means giving our time and energy for special ministries or missions, but Nursing Care Patients often it means caring for those right in front of us--the Good Samaritan Home sick or suffering in our own homes, families, neighbor- IL Veterans Home hoods, or parishes. Welcome to guests who are joining us on this Thanksgiving holiday weekend. May your visit be enjoyable and your travel safe this holiday season!

At the close of the Church year, we are offered the feast of Christ the King—a twentieth century addition to the Church’s liturgical calendar that recognizes that our salvation does not come from politicians or politics, not in the revolutionary power of science and worldly wisdom at our fingertips, not in the security pro- vided by the might of our armies and world influence. Our final hope rests in the glorious reign of our Lord here and in the world to come The history of the 20th century is a story of great advances in science, technol- ogy, education, and communications, but a growing tendency to isolate and mar- ginalize the individual human person, devaluing human life and dignity in favor of economic or political advantage that can be seized for worldly power. The long, sad legacy of war and social disorder during the 20th century into our own finds its roots in the frightening eclipse of human respect and dignity in our supposedly-enlightened age.

Next weekend, St. Anthony Church welcomes Deacon Patrick O’Toole for a Parish Mission that will run on the evenings of Sunday, December 3, through Tuesday, December 5 at 7pm. As our November Stewardship Newsletter explained, Deacon will be presenting a series on “Embracing a Better Way”… how unity as God’s children will help us to know better what it means to be his dis- ciples, and how to live that call practically. Thanks to the Parish Mission committee of the Pas- toral Council for hosting this event.

Mark your calendars for an advent Penance Service to take place at St. Peter Church on Sunday, December 17 at 3pm. A variety of confessors from the local community will be available to hear your confession. This will be the only community penance service during the season of Advent.

Tis the Season for that ‘someone special’ to pop the question and present a ring. If during this holiday season you find yourself engaged to be married and hope to be married at St. Anthony Church, we ask that you contact the parish as soon as possible to begin marriage preparations. The Church expects at least six months of preparation before a proposed wedding date. Please call the parish office at (217) 222-5996 to get started. For more information about getting married in the Catholic Church and some of the details about the preparation program and other services provided by the diocese, go to: http://www.dio.org/familylife/marriage-preparation.html .

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Every one of God's children is a unique creation with talents and gifts that are found in no one else. Each of us is asked to bring our special "twist" to life and to living the Gospel, leaving our impact on the world in a way that no one else can. Are we ever afraid to use our gifts or to be who we are? Fear can cripple us and prevent us from discovering the profound and creative ways in which we can become the person God meant us to be. We like our comfort zones and do not like to be stretched and challenged. Yet this is necessary if we are going to produce the fruit we are capable of producing and live the radical message of the Gos- pel. For serious Christians, the status quo has got to go!
