June 2018 PH.Pub (Read-Only) PRAYERFUL HEARTS JUNE 2018 MARY OUR MODEL FOR PEACE June Birthdays “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” From these words of Jesus, we learn that the world’s idea of peace may not be the same as Christ’s peace. Certainly, we desire peace among the peoples of the world, but we know from history that world peace is often elusive and difficult to achieve. So often, I feel tiny and helpless in the face of the world’s division and war. At these times I turn to Our Blessed Mother who faced great pain and trials in her role as the mother of Jesus. Most of her life was hidden in the ordinary of daily living. She did not rail against the extreme pain and trials of her life. She did not become an activist, but lived, loved, prayed and trusted fully in God. She kept all Julie Knudson 1st things in her heart. Jed Christensen 2nd We too can take our trials and pains and our thirst for true peace to Christ through Mary. She is our Helen Medelman 2nd platform for peace larger than any on earth. We may be tiny, but not helpless when we seek Christ’s Janet Pinkelman 2nd peace for ourselves and for the world through His mother Mary. • A Brief History of St. Anthony's Church
A Brief History of St. Anthony's Church. Dedication St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Charleston, WV, 1955, p. 5-15. CAP at Orchard Lake. In 1904 a large Polish population in a West Side industrial plant was the cause for the founding of the present St. Anthony Parish. Father Agatho Rolf, O.F.M. Cap., said the first Mass in the Kelly Axe Factory, wherein many of the Polish population were employed, in the Fall of 1905. Father Agatho was then pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Charleston. His assistant, Father Mau- rice Ackerman, O.F.M.Cap., also was saying Masses in 1906, in the same plant. In the summer of 1906, Father Cyprian Gehrling, O.F.M.Cap., was appointed to look after the spiritual needs of the Polish people and he continued saying Mass in this location until a church was built. In the fall of 1905, the Most Rev. Patrick J. Donahue, Bishop of Wheeling, purchased the site of the present church and school. The building of the original church began on September 20, 1907, and was completed on January 4, 1908. Even though the church was uncompleted at the time the first Mass was said on December 8, 1907. Father Cyprian blessed the church on January 26, 1908, under the patronage of St. Ladislaus. The business recession of 1909 caused many of the Polish population to leave Charleston, and the parish sustained a gradual loss of members. Father Cyprian remained as pastor until the summer of 1918, when he was succeeded by Father Gregory Loebach, O.F.M.Cap.

St. John Bosco Awards [Daria] John Bosco was born in 1815. He was an Italian priest, an educator and writer, who dedicated his life to the education and service of young people. He employed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, John Bosco dedicated his works to St. Francis when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco. His good works continue today and those familiar with his life and ministry will celebrate the 200 anniversary of his birth next year. St. John Bosco was canonized by Pope Pius XI (11th) on Easter Sunday 1934. He was given the title, “Father and Teacher of Youth.” Today he is known as the patron saint of those who work with young people. ! ! • Saint Anthony of Padua
Name _____________________________________ Date _______________ Saint Anthony of Padua Directions: Read the biography and answer the questions. Fernando Martins de Bulhoes was born in Portugal where he went to a Catholic school and studied to become a priest. After his ordination, he encountered a group of travelling friars, whose order had only recently been founded by Saint Francis of Assisi eleven years earlier. Inspired by their simple and evangelical way of life, he decided to join them and took the name Anthony in honor of Saint Anthony of Egypt. From there he set out on a missionary journey to Spain, but he became ill and tried to return home. His ship was set off course and he arrived in Italy instead. There he took up a new ministry and became as well-known preacher and teacher. He earned the attention of Saint Francis, who did not think academic study and teaching held a place in his order. Saint Anthony convinced him otherwise and proved to be a genuine follower of the Franciscan way of life. Saint Francis entrusted all theological formation of friars to him from that point forward. Saint Anthony is best known as the patron saint of lost items. A Franciscan novice once stole his personal copy of the Book of Psalms. Saint Anthony prayed that it would be found. The novice then returned the book and returned to become a full Franciscan friar. 1. Why did Saint Francis distrust Saint Anthony before he met him in person? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. Saint Anthony was a gifted preacher and teacher.
