Isola del Giglio, in Italian it means “lily” island but originates its name from “Aegilium”, in “goat island”. Only 10 miles from Argentario promontory, it’s a gem in the . It is second in size among the islands of the and counts around 1500 inhabitants mainly living in and Castello. The island of Giglio is known above all for its natural beauties: the crystal-clear sea, with rich and fishy seabed, are the setting for a 90% untouched nature where the low Mediterranean vegetation still reigns with its colors and perfumes. Beautiful sandy beaches and isolated coves, ancient paths immersed in a rich nature, breathtaking views, a picturesque port and the charming medieval village of make of Giglio island a treasure to be discovered. On the other side the promontory was once an island just a short stretch out into the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Tuscan coastline. Eventually, due to sea currents, two sandbars formed joining the island to the mainland. The town of sits between them, also attached to the mainland by an artificial dam.

Route

Day 1 Arrive in Giglio Porto It takes 1 hour by ferry from to Giglio Porto (ferry from 6am to 8pm). The island of Giglio is a peaceful place, where you will feel the touch of the nature and the passage of history.

Day 2 Walk from Giglio Porto to (14,5 km or 9,5 km) The first walk of this discovery trip of the southern coast of Toscana region it's a panoramic walk in the northern part of the island, along gravel tracks and footpaths. Along the itinerary you can enjoy views of the Argentario Promontory and the Tuscan coast other than , and Corsica and the stunning viewpoint of Punta Faraglione. At the end of the walk you take the bus to Giglio Porto or Giglio Castello.

Day 3 Walk from medieval Giglio Castello to Giglio Porto (13,5 km or 15,5 km) Today you explore the wild and remote southern part of Giglio island. After the short bus ride you arrive in the medieval settlement of Giglio Castello, worth a visit, especially the imposing castle called Rocca Aldobrandesca. After a good coffee and stroll you walk the ridge from Giglio Castello, descending towards Punta del Capel Rosso, the southernmost point of the island, where a beautiful lighthouse is located. In this part you can enjoy 360° views with the Tuscany's coast on east and the islands of Montecristo and Corsica on west. Then you cross again the hills and descend to Giglio Porto. You can shorten the route (2 km) if needed. This afternoon you take the ferry back to Porto Santo Stefano

Day 4 Porto S. Stefano loop walk (10 km or 15 km) Porto Santo Stefano is still a lively fishermen village, and it had always been the base for the sailors of the Mediterranean. Even the Roman left many traces of their passage and they used to call it Portus Traianus. Note: the inhabitants of Santo Stefano are also called “sarracchiai”, from the tradition started in 1700 to use the sarracchio leaves to produce ropes for the boats. Today’s walk takes you along the hill chains surrounding Porto Santo Stefano. Along the itinerary you can enjoy great views over the Argentario's coast and the Orbetello Lagoon. From Capo d'Uomo you can watch Giglio Island and Island. The itinerary runs along gravel tracks and footpath.

Day 5 Walk from Porto S. Stefano to (18 km or 14,5 km) Porto Ercole, that you will reach at the end of today’s walk, is in the “most beautiful Italian villages” list…you’ll see why! It was founded by the Etruscans and then conquered by the Romans. Quite interesting that today the inhabitants celebrate (in May) the attack their ancestors suffered from the Pirate Barbarossa in 1544, where the town was completely destroyed; everyone can participate in pirate’s outfit. The itinerary crosses all the Argentario promontory from Porto Santo Stefano to Porto Ercole. It's a long walk which can be shortened if needed. You walk along very panoramic gravel tracks and 4x4 tracks. The itinerary is full of viewpoints from where you can see a long part of the Argentario's coast and the Tuscan archipelago's islands. You can also see the Spanish fortresses which surround Porto Ercole. Day 6 Walk to Porto Ercole via Monte Argentario (17 km or 15,5 km) After a short bus ride you can summit the Monte Argentario. It's a demanding hike for the length and the difference of altitude between the beginning and the top of Monte Argentario. You walk mostly inside the wood reaching some spectacular viewpoints from where you can see the Orbetello Lagoon, Maremma's coast and the islands. At km 5 you can visit the Santuario della Presentazione
