2015 Drew Short Term Program

Tasting the Roots of Western Civilization Ascea, May 23 – June 13, 2015

Journey to one of the birthplaces of Western Civilization, the region of , home of the National Park of Cilento, and , which has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). This area is also the home of the “Philosophy of Being”, a fundamental element of western thought, as well as the Mediterranean Diet. Starting from the memoirs of Arthur John Strutt, who embarked on a journey from to in 1838, learn and experience a full immersion in the literary, historic, philosophical, archaeological, enogastronomical and naturalistic specialties of the Cilento area, with excursions and laboratories. Read the works of other famous travel writers from ancient to modern times who wrote about this area such as Homer, and Zeno, Strabo, Virgil, Cicero, Dante, Berardino Rota, Giambattista Vico, Leopardi, Goethe, Ungaretti, Hemingway and Ancel Keys. Eligibility Requirements: 1. minimum GPA of 2.0 2. good disciplinary standing

Academic credit: 4 credits

Credits can fulfill requirements for: Italian special major and minor Breadth - Humanities and Interdisciplinary Diversity - International Off-Campus Experience

Interests & Career Appeal: Ideal for students interested in Cultural Anthropology, Italian Culture and History, or careers in education, tourism, and the promotion and development of land resources.

Program Cost: $2,950 includes tuition, lodging, meals, local transportation, guided visits and cultural excursions. Roundtrip airfare and personal expenses are not included.
