  • A Long-Term Analysis of Passenger Flows on a Regional Rail Line
    C. Caropreso et al., Int. J. Transp. Dev. Integr., Vol. 1, No. 3 (2017) 329–338 A LONG-TERM ANALYSIS OF PASSENGER FLOWS ON A REGIONAL RAIL LINE C. Caropreso, C. DI Salvo, M. Botte & L. D’ACIERNO Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Federico II University of Naples, Italy. Abstract Promoting rail systems can represent a useful policy for rebalancing modal choices and reducing pri- vate car use, especially in high-density contexts. Obviously, an increase in passenger numbers is only possible if generalized costs (i.e. a weighted sum of times and monetary costs) associated to public transport are abated. According to the recent literature and current professional practice, most strategies for achieving this objective are based only on infrastructural interventions which may be unfeasible or inadequate in densely populated contexts. Likewise, the adoption of policies based on replacing exist- ing fleets or reducing fare levels entails increases in national or regional subsidies, which would be difficult to achieve in the current economic climate. Hence, our proposal is based on investigating effects on travel demand arising from the replacement or upgrading of existing signalling systems (both in terms of trackside and on-board equipment). In- deed, the recent European Union policy to create a single transnational interoperable rail network im- poses the development of innovative signalling systems. In this context, since cost–benefit analysis has to be implemented to verify the economic and environmental feasibility of the proposed intervention strategy, an appropriate method should be developed to estimate passenger flows according to future configurations. In this article, we propose a method to determine travel demand in current and future contexts by appropriately processing data from Italy’s national census on mobility, population growth forecasts and turnstile counts.

The beautiful and historic city of Salerno, Italy, is situated 60 km south of Naples and offers an enchanting view of the scenery of the Gulf of Salerno facing the magnificent Amalfi Coast. Nearby are the ancient sites of Pompei and Paestum. Salerno has escaped mass tourism, and it is “authentically Italian”, with a historic center, an ancient castle overlooking the city and the bay, and a long seafront promenade. Its marvelous year-round climate makes it possible to enjoy a “typical Italian” outdoor lifestyle. It will be the location of the PPS-24 annual meeting of the Polymer Processing Society (http://www.pps-24.com). The meeting will take place in June 15- 19, 2008. The venue will be the Grand Hotel Salerno right on the coast overlooking Salerno Bay. • Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia
Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia (8th – 6th centuries BCE) An honors thesis for the Department of Classics Olivia E. Hayden Tufts University, 2013 Abstract: Although ancient Greeks were traversing the western Mediterranean as early as the Mycenaean Period, the end of the “Dark Age” saw a surge of Greek colonial activity throughout the Mediterranean. Contemporary cities of the Greek homeland were in the process of growing from small, irregularly planned settlements into organized urban spaces. By contrast, the colonies founded overseas in the 8th and 6th centuries BCE lacked any pre-existing structures or spatial organization, allowing the inhabitants to closely approximate their conceptual ideals. For this reason the Greek colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia, known for their extensive use of gridded urban planning, exemplified the overarching trajectory of urban planning in this period. Over the course of the 8th to 6th centuries BCE the Greek cities in Sicily and Magna Graecia developed many common features, including the zoning of domestic, religious, and political space and the implementation of a gridded street plan in the domestic sector. Each city, however, had its own peculiarities and experimental design elements. I will argue that the interplay between standardization and idiosyncrasy in each city developed as a result of vying for recognition within this tight-knit network of affluent Sicilian and South Italian cities. This competition both stimulated the widespread adoption of popular ideas and encouraged the continuous initiation of new trends. ii Table of Contents: Abstract. …………………….………………………………………………………………….... ii Table of Contents …………………………………….………………………………….…….... iii 1. Guided small group cycling tour Amalfi Coast & Cilento Cycling the Coast of the Sirens Enjoy the best of southern Italy: from the unknown Cilento to the dramatic Amalfi Coast TRIP NOTES 2020 © Genius Loci Travel. All rights reserved. [email protected] | www.genius-loci.it ***GENIUS LOCI TRAVEL - The Real Spirit Of Italy*** Guided small group cycling tour INTRODUZIONE The regions of Amalfi and the Cilento have been known as a paradise on earth since ancient times. The Greeks built some of their most impressive temples here and under the Romans they formed part of ‘Campania Felix’, or the Happy Land. When travelling here, one easily becomes overwhelmed by the well-known cultural and natural attractions of the famous ‘Costiera Amalfitana’ with its towering cliffs and picturesque coves. However, the Cilento region south of Salerno, now one of Italy’s biggest National Parks, where the coastline bulges out into an expanse of mountainous landmass, is also well worth a visit. This tour gives you the opportunity to discover both the busy, touristy Amalfi and the quiet, peaceful Cilento. Here in the Cilento National Park you pass through world-famous cultural sites that are UNESCO World Heritage listed, such as Velia and Paestum, and visit some of the nicest medieval villages in the area, both along the coast and slightly inland, where the traditional way of life is still evident. All these attractions are connected by great well-paved and quiet roads, ideal for cycling. Of course there will also be plenty of time to enjoy the splendid beaches and wonderful food on offer.
