SEATTLE -- Seven stellar high school student-athletes, including three from the state of Washington and four from California, signed letters of intent to attend the University of Washington, women’s soccer coach Lesle Gallimore announced Wednesday.

Washington was one of four schools singled out by SoccerBuzz.com as having produced a “breakthrough 2007 signing class.” SoccerBuzz ranked four members of the Huskies’ signing class among the nation’s top 150 recruits.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with this group of student-athletes,” Gallimore exclaimed. “We feel they each define what being a Washington women’s soccer player is, a great player, exceptional student and exemplary human being.”

Heading the list of signees is Hannah Greig, the Washington Class 4A state player of the year from state champion Woodinville. Greig amassed 14 goals and nine assists during her 2005 prep campaign. She is a member of the Washington Olympic Development Program (ODP) and a club standout with the Northwest Nationals. She was ranked among the top-100 of the Soccer Buzz rankings.

“Hannah is a tough and feisty player who will give us a real bite defensively,” Gallimore said. “She is a natural leader and plays with a confidence that I love to see in young players.”

Another future Husky who led her prep squad to a championship was Jane Mitchell whose Torrey Pines (Calif.) High School team won the CIF title during the 2005-06 school year. Mitchell was UW’s highest-rated signee in the Soccer Buzz rankings, listed among the country’s top-50 recruits.

“Jane is an extremely hard working that makes her presence known on both sides of the ball,” Gallimore describes. “She plays with a lot of passion and makes players around her better.”

Mitchell competed with the San Diego Surf soccer club that also featured McKenna Waitley, a forward from El Cajon, Calif. Waitley was a first-team all-academic selection and the MVP of the Granite Hills High School squad that was the CIF runner-up last season.

“McKenna is skillful and good one-v-one. We are looking for her to create and finish chances for us, and we feel will quickly become a key contributor in our attack,” Gallimore remarked.

The Huskies collected another player from Southern California in talented midfielder Sara Turcios who hails from Altadena, Calif. The LaSalle High School product was ranked as a top-150 recruit by Soccer Buzz. Turcios was featured on the “Players to Watch” list by Top Drawer Soccer and has been invited to try out for Argentina’s National Team.

“Sara is a crafty and skillful ,” said Gallimore. “She is a real student of the game and will fit well into our possession-oriented style of play.”

Another in-state UW signee is Theresa Bartlett, a teammate of Greig’s on the Northwest Nationals and an ODP competitor. Bartlett is a midfielder/forward from Shoreline, Wash. She was a four-year starter who led all Shorewood High School scorers during three seasons.

“Tess is an athletic, strong and dynamic forward,” Gallimore said. “She is committed to excellence in all parts of her life and it shows on the soccer field.”

The third signee from the state of Washington is Kendyl Pele from Kennewick. Pele not only possesses a great soccer name, but also a great soccer game as she is listed among the top 150 recruits by Soccer Buzz. She amassed 39 goals and 35 goals during her prep career at Kamiakin High School.

“Kendyl is a fast and athletic defender. She will quickly develop into a top-notch attacking defender for us,” Gallimore projects.

Completing the Husky recruiting class is Kellye Joswick from Placentia, Calif. The midfielder established new school records for career goals and points at El Dorado High School. Joswick led her prep squad to a pair of Century League championships and was the league MVP as a senior.

“Kellye is a tireless worker and can really get up and down the wide areas of the field,” said Gallimore. “She is a very steady player that you can count on to get the job done.”

The seven signees will fill the void left by the departure of four seniors who helped the Huskies advance to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2004. Washington completed the 2006 season with a 7-12-1 record.

“As a group they will have an immediate and positive impact in our program and we’re proud to finally call them Huskies,” Gallimore remarked. “We're looking forward to seeing all of them in purple and gold come August.”
