n 27 years of covering sport I've been lucky enough to see some of the great contests between rival countries and clubs. I , Olympics and the other football codes have produced some wonderful rivalries around the world. The cross town showdown between my beloved NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC has grown into a fierce rivalry. Certainly it's a must see sports event for the family and we're here tonight at Pirtek Stadium as another chapter will be written. Credit must go to both clubs for developing and encouraging the rivalry. The RBB and the Cove are passionate fans. I love the walk from Church Street to Pirtek and walking into the intimate cauldron. When my wife and Seven colleague Chris Bath and I were approached by Wanderers Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman to become club ambassadors, we were immediately impressed. The community feel of the club was inclusive and embodied Sydney's sprawling west. The region needed a club that truly represented them whatever your culture and religion. We've been proud ambassadors since day one and we love match day. Women and children are welcomed and there are no airs and graces. It's a model every sporting organisation and club should follow. Bring on tonight, good luck Sydney FC but we sing for the Wanderers. Enjoy !

Pride on the line

Story by Russ Gibbs @RussGibbs10

East versus West. Red and Black versus Sky Blue. The RBB versus the Cove. Pride and Passion with bragging rights on the line.

ven at fifteen months old the match-up between NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers and ESydney FC stirs the emotions of those participating and watching like no other in the Hyundai A-League. Despite its relative youth as a fixture it feels like it has always been this way with the enmity between the teams and emanating from the stands almost visible. For pure theatre nothing matches the Sydney set-to as nothing comes close to the visceral emotions on display when the Sydney boys meet. For the supporters it’s not just about the football. Ever since Sydney FC snubbed the West by moving from its intended location of to the the die-hard and loyal fans in the West have felt alienated towards their Sky Blue cousins. But not until the formation of the Wanderers was there an opportunity for this hurt to manifest itself into a support that eclipsed that of not just their local rivals but of any club in the competition.

"...19,126 packed Pirtek Stadium to almost breaking point for the first ever meeting between the clubs on 20 October 2012"

WSWANDERERSFC.COM.AU 10

At the end of an absorbing ninety minutes it was Sydney FC celebrating a maiden Derby success. The goal, as if the script hadn’t demanded it, netted in the 54th minute by star recruit Alessandro Del Piero from the penalty spot. Referee Strebre Delovski hardly endeared himself to the RBB by awarding the spot-kick which the Italian maestro knocked in at the second attempt after his first effort had been chalked off for encroachment. By the time the pair met again the two team’s respective campaigns were heading in polar opposite directions. After winning at Parramatta, Sydney had claimed only seven points out of a possible 21 including suffering a humiliating 2-7 hammering from a gleeful and ruthless Mariners. In the same period the Wanderers had racked up four wins and looked in good shape heading into the encounter. Another bumper crowd was eagerly anticipating the start of proceedings with 26,176 at Allianz Stadium A massive crowd of 19,126 packed Pirtek Stadium as referee Chris Beath got the action under way. And to almost breaking point for the first ever meeting revenge was a dish best served cold for the Wanderers between the clubs on 20 October 2012. The Wanderers who came away from the fixture with a deserved 2-0 entered the match, only the third in their history, win that in reality could have been many more. Sydney still searching for an elusive first Hyundai A-League FC, struggling at the foot of the Hyundai A-League goal having drawn their inaugural match with the ladder, could not match the purpose and poise of the Mariners and losing narrowly away to Adelaide Wanderers much to the delight of the travelling support. The Sky Blues meanwhile had surprisingly Youssouf Hersi opened the scoring for the Wanderers gone down in both their opening matches; losing midway through the first half capitalising on a mistake comically to Wellington Phoenix before being by Sky Blues defender Seb Ryall who failed to deal out-gunned in a five-goal thriller by the Jets. properly with Jerome Polenz’s swinging cross from

Heading towards the Premiers Plate and hunting an eleventh straight win the Wanderers were hot favourites in front of a raucous home crowd of 19,585 who were desperate to wrap up the silverware against their bitter rivals. Del Piero did the damage once more for the visitors as he seized on an errant pass to surge into the Wanderers and bludgeon a left-footed finish past the outstretched palm of . Sotiri Patrino of Pan Hellenic vs Filippo Bottalico of APIA Leichhardt in 1962

Great Rivalries of Sydney Story by Joe Russo Football rivalries in Sydney are nothing new so today’s encounter between the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC is merely a continuation of the past.

However, when withdrew Sydney City from the NSL in 1987 after Round 1, ironically a number of Sydney City players joined Olympic and so too did their coach, former Socceroos mentor the late . Lowy withdrew from soccer until returning many years later as Chairman of Football Federation Australia. Rivalries were not limited to ‘one rivalry between two teams’. There was a degree of cross-pollination. For instance APIA Leichhardt and St George Budapest were often bragging about historical records; who won the most titles including in the years prior to the formation of the NSL in 1977. That rivalry reached a climax in 1987 when both teams claimed the title. APIA Leichhardt won on a first-past-the-post basis having had a stellar season where they went 23 games undefeated. In those days the NSL title was decided in the European way over the course of a season. The then governing body, the Australian Soccer Federation, had decided that 1987 was to be the last title decided like this. Grand finals were already a feature of Australian soccer and, in the 1987 Grand Final, St George Budapest defeated APIA Leichhardt by 4-0. So who actually won the title? A compromise was reached where both teams claimed a title albeit by some slightly different name. Sydney Olympic vs Marconi Matters were further complicated given that APIA Stallions NSW Leichhardt and St George Budapest were coached

by and Frank Arok respectively. At the time Arok was Socceroos coach and Rasic a former mentor of the green and gold. They had similar backgrounds and their rivalry stemmed back to when Rasic replaced Arok at St George and then the roles were reversed in the early 1970s. Rasic to this day always claims bragging rights over Arok given that he successfully took Australia to World Cup Finals in his only campaign in charge (1974) whereas Arok failed twice to qualify for World Cups (1986 and 1990). Marconi diversified their rivalries too. Two consecutive Grand Finals in 1989 and 1990 against Sydney Olympic where each had one victory over the other ensured that Marconi v Sydney Olympic clashes were always something special. In true derby fashion Marconi and Sydney United (formerly Sydney Croatia) produced a healthy geographic rivalry. Both teams played their home matches literally only a couple of streets away from each other at and Edensor Park respectively. Clashes between these two teams were affectionately known as the real local derby of the NSL. However, rivalries didn’t stop once the NSL ended. APIA Leichhardt and Sydney United, two wonderful junior nurseries of Australian football, often boast about who produced the most Socceroos. So there they are – the rivalries, some of which are funnier than others and with no definitive outcome, that continue today with the NRMA Insurance Western John Watkiss in an APIA Leichhardt vs Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC. Long may it continue Hakoah derby in the 1960s or early 1970s because football would be the poorer without them.

To top off his playing days, the ever-present Corry became the second oldest player in the history of the National Soccer League when he played his final match for Marconi at an impressive 41 years of age. It was a fitting end to a record-breaking career that Corry says had a lot to do with his steely personality, passion for football and an inability to take no as an answer. After finally hanging up his boots as a player in 1981 Corry set his sights on a new goal in football; coaching. And once again proved just how valuable an asset he is to Australian football. He took a few years break to recover from a long career on the pitch and began learning his trade on the sideline before eventually signing on as Sydney Croatia’s Head Coach in 1989. From there he managed Blacktown City and Bankstown, temporarily leaving his roots in Western Sydney to win his first title (as player or coach) with Wolves before returning home with Canterbury-Marrickville and a year with Sutherland. A Modern Footballer

Story by Ann Odong @AnnOdong

In modern football the days of the physical, tough tackling, no-nonsense defenders are numbered.

ltered interpretation of the laws, the increased pace of the game and the desire for ball- playingA defenders has placed the defenders of yesteryear on football’s endangered species list. This makes Teigen Allen an enigma; an old school footballer masquerading as a very new age teenager. Never a match goes by where the 19 year old is not spotted flying into a tackle or wrestling for possession and position with an attacker. However that is not the sum of the player. Despite possessing the qualities of a bygone era, the Western Sydney Wanderers and Matildas right back has also developed all the quintessential traits of the modern full back to make her one of the best in the country. Allen’s football odyssey started before she could even kick a ball as mother Velvet remembers. “Teigen always loved the black and white ball even as a baby. She couldn’t walk yet but just wanted to push the football around.” At the tender age of three Allen played her first football match as a goalkeeper for her uncle’s Lakemba U6s team.

WSWANDERERSFC.COM.AU 24

That match was spent sitting in the nets playing with matchbox cars and making daisy chains but it wasn’t long until she made her way onto the field where the action was. A year at Lakemba was followed by seasons with Emu Plains and Nepean United before NSW Institute of Sport coach invited Allen to join his famed Matildas factory at the age of 12. It was soon deemed that her abandon in placing her body on the line, pace, mobility, natural aptitude for and fearlessness in taking on opposition players would make her a perfect full back. Allen was soon debuting for Australia in the U17 Women’s National Team, captaining the Young Matildas and pushing for a starting spot at Sydney FC in the newly minted Westfield W-League. Then came the breakthrough season. With injury ruling out several experienced Sky Blue defenders for the 2009 season, Allen, all of 15 years of age, was one of a number of “Baby Blues” called on to fill in the void. The result for the team was a rare Westfield W-League Premiership and Championship double and, for the teenager, a call up to the senior national team. It was the fulfilment of Allen’s dreams to be training and playing alongside idols and . “It was nerve racking at the start,” Allen remembered. “Once I started to feel more comfortable within

the team everything started to get a bit easier.” Things would only get better the following year. With the Matildas undergoing regeneration the aim of the AFC Asian Cup 2010 was simply to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2011. What happened in that month in China was beyond everyone’s dreams and culminated in hoisting Australia’s first AFC silverware into the overcast May night. An Asian Cup champion. At 16. If Teigen Allen’s career had finished there she would already achieved more than many veterans of the Australian game. However, more was on the horizon. 2011 saw Allen and her fellow teen prodigies grace the biggest stage in the women’s game; the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. Unfortunately, for the first time in her career has already established herself as one of injury would curtail her participation in the the major members of the team. tournament to just 20 minutes on the park. a very harmonious balance in the dressing room. For the coaching staff getting the best players on the pitch at senior level and developing young talent can prove difficult but Lawrence feels they have the right recipe for success right Lawrence’s immediate goal is to play senior football for the Wanderers and after training with the squad feels it is more a matter of when and not if. “Tony Popovic gives you plenty of confidence as a player as he genuinely believes in your football talent. “I just go on the pitch to prove myself for the team, always try do the little things well and never get casual or complacent.” Asked what his ultimate football utopia would be he was quick to point out that it is every footballer’s dream to play for his country and that he hopes to be part of ’s Joey’s squad for the U20 World Cup in New Zealand in 2015. Despite that passion to wear the national colours he would love to one day play for his beloved Arsenal FC. “It would be a dream to play with a club that I have enjoyed watching since I was a young boy!” His hero is Shinji Ono who he says is professional in every aspect of his game and life. “He is a perfect footballer to watch and learn from at the club and approaches his football in such a positive way that it is hard to not follow his lead.” Of course the name of Arsenal and French great is high on the list as well as the exuberant personality of Swedish goal scoring sensation Zlatan Ibrahimović. To relax away from the pressures of intense training and school work Lawrence loves to watch movies, listen to plenty of R&B and dabble in writing and performing “After each training session and game I always freestyle rap with teammate Alusine Fofanah. think about how I can improve on the mistakes I “I don’t take it too seriously but we love writing made and how I can help the team further.” things down and hearing how it sounds. A key ingredient in getting players to perform “As important as it is to train and work hard at the is making them happy within the club environment game it is also important to give your body and mind and the Wanderers have worked hard to achieve time to recover so it is the perfect release for me.”
