Hrvoje Tutek University of Zagreb The Institutional Framework of Post-Socialist Literary Production: Literature as Creative Writing ven though the main sources of the drama (or tragedy, to be more precise) of the Ecapitalist restoration in former Yugoslavia (or “transition,” as it is usually called) are its most visible socio-economic consequences such as deindustrialization, ethnic wars, forced population movements, or skyrocketing social inequality, the changes oc- curring to the seemingly less dramatic constituents of the system, such as cultural pro- duction, should by no means be disregarded.1 They should, however, be studied with a sharper critical and comparative focus on their systemic—institutional, political-eco- nomic—aspects, which are determined by pressures stemming from the realities of the social organization of production as a whole. This is necessary not only because such analyses are prerequisites for an informed understanding of specific cultural artifacts in their historical context but perhaps more importantly because they can shed light on the new types of hegemonic demands and limitations that are imposed on cultural activity, as well as ideological compromises that producers of culture are obliged to either internalize or at least consider and relate to in a necessarily political manner in order to have their work disseminated and understood in the public sphere. As things stand at the moment, the existence of these ideological and institutional demands and limitations in the field of culture is visible only with difficulty, or when discussed, it is most often explained away as a consequence of temporary institutional disorder emerging from the chaos of transition and entirely corrigible by better poli- cies. -

Transcultural and Trans-Lingual Strategies in Cultural Production COLLOQUIA HUMANISTICA Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics Amir KapetanovićZagreb [email protected] Kaya: from Novella to Film Abstract Te paper analyses the transformation of Kruno Quien’s novella Kaya into a screenplay adaptation and a flm of the same title by eminent Croatian director Vatroslav Mimica. Te analysis points out signifcant characteristics of both the transformation of the text and the transformation of the portrayed Mediterranean urban area (a crime in Trogir), as well as the linguistic stylization of the characters’ Trogir dialect, which contributes to the atmosphere of the flm. Discussions surrounding the flm have so far only unfolded on the basis of a comparison between Quien’s novella and Mimica’s flm. Tis analysis thus contributes important information about the structural and narrative characteristics of the unpublished screenplay, shedding more light on the paths towards leading to the creation of this Croatian flm, which is considered Mimica’s best work and one of the best Croatian flms. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 2 Abstract This thesis employs historical, literary and anthropological methods to show how narratives of identity have been expressed in Croatia since 1991 (when Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia) through popular music and through talking about popular music. Since the beginning of the war in Croatia (1991-95) when the state media stimulated the production of popular music conveying appropriate narratives of national identity, Croatian popular music has been a site for the articulation of explicit national narratives of identity. The practice has continued into the present day, reflecting political and social change in Croatia (e.g. the growth of the war veterans lobby and protests against the Hague Tribunal).
