Drawing Registers List.Xlsx Drawing Registers List Description: The drawing registers are historical lists of engineering drawings produced by the drawing offices of the various railway works. They were produced at the same time as the drawings were created. The drawing registers were originally used by railway company staff to find and keep track of their drawings. They are a useful secondary finding aid if your search on the drawing list or archive catalogue is inconclusive. Not all the drawings listed in the registers have survived into the National Railway Museum’s collections so it’s a good idea to return to our lists or catalogue to check before making a request to access drawings in Search Engine. System of arrangement: This list brings together registers from different works. As the drawing registers were created and maintained separately by each railway company or works drawing office there are a number of arrangement schemes used. Some of the registers are arranged by sequential drawing number, some by lot number and some by locomotive class. • Model Railways
Toy Trains, and Model Railways The Clockwork Era, 1952-55 The genesis of a lifetime’s hobby was, as usual at that time, a Hornby ‘O’ gauge clockwork train set, purchased probably for my birthday in 1952, or at Xmas later that year. This comprised a dark red 0-4-0 tank locomotive and two 4-wheeled carriages, running on jointed tinplate track which I took great pleasure in routing sinuously around the table and chairs, on the floor of our living room at Fenton Avenue, Staines, getting under everyone’s feet. This system was expanded to include various goods wagons, a level crossing, signals, a tinplate station, a further coach, and lastly an additional engine of the same 0-4-0 type, but this time enamelled in black livery. A broken mainspring, no doubt due to over-enthusiastic winding, was a problem requiring fiddly replacement by my father. This collection was probably sold to the Atkins at no 24, who had twin boys a few years younger than me. They also had all my old ‘Dinky Toys’ which too would have been worth something these days! However they were probably very ‘well-used’ and without their boxes, so perhaps not. “OO” gauge electric trains 1956-58 The replacement for my ‘O’ gauge system came in the form of a Hornby Dublo “Royal Scot” train set. I think this cost the princely sum of 63 shillings (£3.15) at a time when the average take-home pay was around £9 per week. Nowadays a similar set would be around £120, so the relative amounts are not greatly different.

ARMAMENTS FIRMS, THE STATE PROCUREMENT SYSTEM, AND THE NAVAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN EDWARDIAN BRITAIN Professor Roger Lloyd-Jones History Department, Sheffield Hallam University Dr. Myrddin John Lewis History Department, Sheffield Hallam University This article examines the relationship between Britain’s armament firms and the state’s procurement system, presenting a case for a Naval Industrial Complex (NIC) in the years immediately before the Great War. It argues that in Edwardian Britain a nuanced set of institutional networks were established between the Admiralty and a small elite group of armament manufacturers. The NIC demonstrates the close collaboration between the armament firms supplying the Admiralty and between the Admiralty and an elite group of private contractors. This article concludes that the NIC did not lead to profiteering by contactors, and they did supply the warships and naval ordnance that enabled Britain to out build Germany in the naval race. This paper examines the relationship in Britain between the armaments industry and the military institutions of the state during the years preceding the Great War, when there were intensifying international tensions, and concerns over Britain’s defense capabilities. Through an assessment of the War Office (WO) and Admiralty procurement system, we apply John Kenneth Galbraith’s theory that businesses may establish institutional networks as “countervailing powers” to mediate business-state relations and, thus, we challenge the proposition that the state acted as a “monopsonist,” dominating contractual relations with private armaments firms.’ We argue that during the years prior to the war, Britain’s Naval Industrial Complex (MC) involved a strengthening collaboration between the British Admiralty and the big armament firms.

During this period, the armaments industry underwent a radical transformation, moving from being based on public-owned arsenals and yards to being based on private firms – the system of military procurement prevalent today.

    > g s J> ° "^ Q as : F7 lA-dh-**^) THE EVOLUTION OF THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE (1803 to 1898.) BY Q. A. SEKON, Editor of the "Railway Magazine" and "Hallway Year Book, Author of "A History of the Great Western Railway," *•., 4*. SECOND EDITION (Enlarged). £on&on THE RAILWAY PUBLISHING CO., Ltd., 79 and 80, Temple Chambers, Temple Avenue, E.C. 1899. T3 in PKEFACE TO SECOND EDITION. When, ten days ago, the first copy of the " Evolution of the Steam Locomotive" was ready for sale, I did not expect to be called upon to write a preface for a new edition before 240 hours had expired. The author cannot but be gratified to know that the whole of the extremely large first edition was exhausted practically upon publication, and since many would-be readers are still unsupplied, the demand for another edition is pressing. Under these circumstances but slight modifications have been made in the original text, although additional particulars and illustrations have been inserted in the new edition. The new matter relates to the locomotives of the North Staffordshire, London., Tilbury, and Southend, Great Western, and London and North Western Railways. I sincerely thank the many correspondents who, in the few days that have elapsed since the publication: of the "Evolution of the , Steam Locomotive," have so readily assured me of - their hearty appreciation of the book. rj .;! G. A. SEKON. -! January, 1899. PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION. In connection with the marvellous growth of our railway system there is nothing of so paramount importance and interest as the evolution of the locomotive steam engine.
