Stroll through the original 1932 engine shed and see magnifi cent preserved locomotives – you can even climb onto the footplates of some! See surviving track from Brunel’s broad gauge railway, discover painstakingly restored buildings, coaches and wagons and learn more about the development of railways and how they changed lives. There’s a chance to get hands-on in the Science of Railways carriages and the signalling centre where you can fi nd out how trains have been controlled through the ages. Descend into a shelter built to keep Didcot’s enginemen safe in World War Two and experience an air raid, or immerse yourself in the varied collection of fascinating, smaller artefacts in the museum. Children can let off steam in the outdoor play area, make tracks to the indoor toy train sets or dress up as a station master. You can relax over lunch or enjoy a snack in the refreshment rooms and don’t forget to pick up a souvenir in the gift shop. The modern trains running past the Centre complete the picture and mean you can experience 180 years of railway progress in just one day!     Toy Trains, and Model Railways The Clockwork Era, 1952-55 The genesis of a lifetime’s hobby was, as usual at that time, a Hornby ‘O’ gauge clockwork train set, purchased probably for my birthday in 1952, or at Xmas later that year. This comprised a dark red 0-4-0 tank locomotive and two 4-wheeled carriages, running on jointed tinplate track which I took great pleasure in routing sinuously around the table and chairs, on the floor of our living room at Fenton Avenue, Staines, getting under everyone’s feet. This system was expanded to include various goods wagons, a level crossing, signals, a tinplate station, a further coach, and lastly an additional engine of the same 0-4-0 type, but this time enamelled in black livery. A broken mainspring, no doubt due to over-enthusiastic winding, was a problem requiring fiddly replacement by my father. This collection was probably sold to the Atkins at no 24, who had twin boys a few years younger than me. They also had all my old ‘Dinky Toys’ which too would have been worth something these days! However they were probably very ‘well-used’ and without their boxes, so perhaps not. “OO” gauge electric trains 1956-58 The replacement for my ‘O’ gauge system came in the form of a Hornby Dublo “Royal Scot” train set. I think this cost the princely sum of 63 shillings (£3.15) at a time when the average take-home pay was around £9 per week. Nowadays a similar set would be around £120, so the relative amounts are not greatly different.

  • Didcot Railway Centre As a Location for Filming
    Didcot Railway Centre as a location for filming Over the years, Didcot Railway Centre (DRC) has been used for the making of various scenes for many main stream films, the making of documentaries, and the shooting of scenes for well known television dramas, as well as commercials. The reasons for this are as follows:- 1. Original Great Western Railway (GWR) buildings and structures. The main such building, the original four track 1932-built engine shed, being adaptable to many purposes. The shed has been used in filming such as The Incredible Sarah, Rowntrees Secret TV commercial and an episode of Inspector Morse. It has been disguised as main line train termini representing several different countries. Glenda Jackson during filming of The Incredible Sarah. Equally, the Transfer Shed at the end of the branch line is a wooden structure used to tranship goods from standard to broad gauge in the early days of steam. The station has an island platform with both standard gauge and the broad gauge track that Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed for the original Great Western Railway in the 1830s. A (working) reproduction of the broad gauge locomotive Fire Fly dating from 1840 is available, hence, train travel as it was over 150 years ago, can be recreated! The location was used in the filming of the Channel 4 series The Camomile Lawn and more recently Carrie’s War and The Elephant Man. The station is ideal for platform shots and period settings and has been used on many occasions as Paddington Station. Dan Cruickshank being filmed in the Transfer Shed for his documentary series Great Railway Adventures.
